Formula for treating sudden onset of heat-induced cough.
Xingren (Apricot Seed, Semen Armeniacae Amarum) (40 seeds) Zisuzi (Perilla Fruit, Fructus Perillae) (1 sheng) Jupi (Tangerine Peel, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) (1 liang) Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, Radix Bupleuri) (4 liang)
The above four herbs are coarsely crushed, boiled in 1 dou (approx. 10 liters) of water until reduced to 3 sheng (approx. 3 liters), and divided into three doses.
Formula for treating upper qi cough.
Zisuzi (Perilla Fruit, Fructus Perillae) Xingren (Apricot Seed, Semen Armeniacae Amarum) Shengjiangzhi (Fresh Ginger Juice,汁 of Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) Dihuangzhi (Rehmannia Juice, juice of Radix Rehmanniae Recens) Baimi (White Honey, Mel) (2 sheng each)
The above five herbs: Crush the Zisuzi, pour over it with Shengjiangzhi and Dihuangzhi, squeeze out the juice using silk gauze, and pour it back onto the residue. Repeat squeezing until all flavor is extracted, then discard the dregs. Boil Xingren until yellow-black, grind into a paste-like consistency, and pour the previously extracted juice over it. Squeeze repeatedly with silk gauze six or seven times until all flavor is extracted, discard dregs, mix with Baimi, place in a copper vessel, and simmer over a hot water bath until it resembles maltose syrup. Take one fangcunbi (a spoonful measure approx. 5-10ml) per dose, three times daily and once at night. (Cui's formula omits Dihuangzhi.)
Another formula: Ganjiangmo (Dried Ginger Powder, Pulvis Rhizomatis Zingiberis Preparatus) (5 liang) Jiaoyi (Malt Sugar Syrup, Maltose) (1 sheng)
Mix the above two ingredients thoroughly, steam them under 5 sheng of rice, cool down, form into pills the size of a jujube, hold in the mouth to dissolve slowly, and swallow gradually. Take five times during the day and twice at night.
Formula for treating new or chronic cough.
Yuanhua (Genkwa Flower, Flos Genkwanidis) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatus) (2 liang each) Baimi (White Honey, Mel) (1 sheng)
Grind the above two herbs into powder, mix into Baimi, and simmer over low heat until thick like porridge. Take one pill the size of a jujube pit per dose, three times daily and once at night, adjusting dosage according to efficacy. Increase dosage if laxative effect is desired. (Shenshi Fang uses this for cough induced by cold drinks and for thirty-year chronic cough: boil Yuanhua in 5 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng, strain, add Ganjiang and Baimi, cook until thick like porridge, and consume.)
Formula for treating the same condition as above.
Kua Donghua (Coltsfoot Flower, Flos Farfarae) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatus) Ziwan (Aster Root, Radix Asteris) (3 liang each) Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit, Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) (2 liang) Yuanhua (Genkwa Flower, Flos Genkwanidis) (1 liang, roasted until red)
Coarsely crush the above five herbs. Boil the first three in 1 dou of water until reduced to 3.5 sheng, strain, add powders of Yuanhua and Ganjiang, mix with 3 sheng of honey, stir into the decoction, and simmer in a copper vessel over low heat until resembling maltose syrup. Take half the size of a jujube pit per dose, three times daily.
Formula for treating thirty-year chronic cough, whether triggered by drinking or spontaneous coughing; although cold-induced coughs vary, this formula addresses them generally:
Xixin (Asarum Root, Radix et Rhizoma Asari) Kua Donghua (Coltsfoot Flower, Flos Farfarae) Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, Radix Saposhnikoviae) Ziwan (Aster Root, Radix Asteris) (3 liang each) Lili (Veratrum Root, Radix Veratri) (2 liang) Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper, Fructus Zanthoxyli) (5 he)
Coarsely crush the above six herbs. Place Lili first in a copper vessel, followed by Ziwan, Xixin, Kua Donghua, and Shujiao. Intersperse 100 large jujubes among the herbs. Boil in 1.2 dou of water over low heat until the liquid is completely evaporated. Remove the jujubes and dry them in the sun. At cockcrow time, take half a jujube. If ineffective, take one whole jujube the next morning. The treatment is adequate when warmth is felt in the chest. For robust individuals desiring expectoration of phlegm, the dosage may be slightly increased to induce vomiting of pus-filled cysts. After vomiting, avoid cold foods and drinks. Discontinue medication once the cough subsides and wait for the medicinal force to settle before eating; otherwise, continuous vomiting may occur.
Formula for treating thirty-year chronic cough:
Baibu (Stemona Root, Radix Stemanae) 20 jin, crush to extract juice, simmer into a syrup. Take one fangcunbi per dose, three times daily. (Waitai Mi Yao records adding 1 jin of maltose syrup to make a concentrated decoction...)
Another formula: Ziwan (Aster Root, Radix Asteris) (2 liang) Kua Donghua (Coltsfoot Flower, Flos Farfarae) (3 liang)
Process the above two herbs, sieve into fine powder. Take before meals, one fangcunbi with warm water, three times daily. Cure within seven days.
Another formula: Baimi (White Honey, Mel) (1 jin) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (2 jin, extract juice)
Weigh the empty copper pot, add honey and weigh again to determine quantity. Add ginger juice and simmer over low heat until the ginger juice is fully evaporated, leaving only the weight of the honey. In the morning, take a pill the size of a jujube, hold in the mouth to dissolve. Take three times daily. Strictly prohibit all miscellaneous foods.
Formula for treating chronic cough that does not heal:
Toushi (Rabbit Excrement, Excrementum Leporis) (49 pieces) Sha (Mineral Salt/Sand, Sal) (2 fen) Hutonglv (Trogopterus Dung, Excrementum Trogopterori) (1 fen)
Grind the above three herbs into powder, form pills with honey the size of wutong seeds. Take three pills per dose with millet broth, three times daily. Continue until all accumulated matter is vomited/excreted, then the disease will heal.
