To treat deficiency exhaustion (Xu Lao), to lighten the body and benefit Qi, to give strength, and a prescription to prevent all sores and carbuncles from ever developing.
Thirty jin of Gouqi (Lycii Cortex / Goji Berry) are chopped. When leaves are growing but not yet fallen, stems and leaves can be used; when leaves have fallen but new ones have not grown, roots can be used. Boil in one shi (ten dou) of water until five dou of liquid remain. Strain out the dregs and let settle. Put the dregs back into the pot with water equal to the previous amount, boil until five dou of liquid remain. Combine with the previous clarified liquid, remove sediment, and simmer in the pot until about two dou remains. Then pour into a small copper pot and simmer until it resembles maltose syrup (Xing). Store in containers. Double-boiling is better. Take one and a half he daily in the morning, twice a day, gradually increasing the dose.
For treating rheumatic body pain, inability to eat, and supplementing weakness and emaciation after sores and carbuncles:
Qiangwei Gen (Root of Rosa multiflora) and Gouqi Gen (Root of Lycium chinense) (each 100 jin), Sheng Dihuang (Fresh Radix Rehmanniae), Shi Mi (Honey) (each 10 jin).
Crush the above four ingredients. First, boil the two roots in water until the flavor is strong, take two hu of liquid and remove sediment. Then add Dihuang and boil until soft, strain out dregs, and simmer over low heat until like porridge. Then add honey and mix well. Take an amount the size of a bullet pill after each meal.
Prescription for compressing and reducing swelling:
Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Bailian (Bulbus Belamcandae), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (each 3 fen).
Crush the above four ingredients. Boil in six sheng of water until three sheng of juice remains. Dip four layers of old cloth into the juice and apply to the swollen area. Change when dry, without limit, day and night.
Another prescription: Qingmuxiang (Radix Akebiae), Xijiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Zhizi Ren (Semen Gardeniae), Zitanxiang (Lignum Pterocarpi Santalinus), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Lingyangjiao (Cornu Saigae Tataricae), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Shegan (Rhizoma Belamcandae), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Bailen (Bulbus Belamcandae) (each 2 liang), Dihuang Zhi (Juice of Radix Rehmanniae) (5 he), Shexiang (Moschus) (2 fen, ground and added).
Crush the above sixteen ingredients. Boil in five sheng of water until slightly less than two sheng remains. Let cool slightly. Dip two layers of old cloth into the decoction and apply to the swollen area. Change when dry, hundreds of times day and night.

Mash the above three ingredients together, boil until Dihuang is thoroughly cooked, and apply to the swollen area. Thickness should be about 2 fen. Change three or four times a day until healed. This also treats all types of swelling.
Another prescription: To treat pain and restlessness caused by sore swelling.
Apply ten layers of fresh Qiuye (Folium Ulmi Macrocarpae) to the affected area, wrap with cloth ensuring appropriate tightness, change twice a day. It relieves pain, reduces swelling, and promotes pus discharge, being very effective, superior to other materials. In winter, collect dried leaves beforehand and moisten with salt water before use. Alternatively, thin slices of Qiupi (Cortex Ulmi Macrocarpae) can be used.
