A prescription for night sweats occurring upon lying down and headache caused by wind deficiency.
Oyster Shell (Muli), Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng) (each 3 liang).
Process the above three herbs, sift them into powder, and take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) with wine, twice a day. This prescription treats all types of sweating; it will be cured after three days of administration.
Another prescription: Oyster Shell (Muli), Polyporus (Leiyuan), Ephedra Root (Mahuanggen) (each 3 liang); Dried Ginger (Ganjiang), Licorice Root (Gancao) (each 1 liang); Rice Flour (Mifen) (2 sheng).
Process the above six herbs, sift them into powder, and apply the powder to the areas where sweating occurs.
(Two discussions, eighteen prescriptions, nine dietary prohibitions)
The discussion states: After the recent recovery from febrile diseases or major illnesses, consuming pork, sheep blood, fatty fish, greasy foods, etc., will inevitably lead to severe diarrhea, which is difficult for physicians to treat and may result in death. If one consumes cakes, millet cakes, malt sugar, minced meat, roasted meat, dates, chestnuts, dried fruits, and other hard-to-digest items, while the stomach qi remains weak and unable to digest them, heat will accumulate again. If purgatives are administered at this time, the stomach qi becomes deficient and cold, leading to uncontrollable severe diarrhea; if not administered, death is certain; if administered, the condition becomes critical. Both scenarios are difficult to rescue. Many die from febrile diseases and major illnesses due to such negligence; caution is essential.
After the recent recovery of an illness, only gruel should be consumed. It is better to eat less and remain slightly hungry than to become full. No other foods should be eaten; even if desired, they should not be provided. After some time has passed, mutton, white rice gruel, soup, pheasant, rabbit, and venison can be gradually introduced. Pork and dog meat must not be consumed. Following recent recovery, one should rest quietly in bed and avoid getting up early. Combing hair and washing the face cause physical fatigue, and excessive talking or mental exertion causes spiritual fatigue. All these factors lead to "lao fu" (relapse due to overexertion). For instance, Gu Zixian, a district inspector, had recovered from an illness but was not yet strong. Hua Tuo examined his pulse and said, "Although the illness has subsided, the body is still deficient and not yet restored. Yang qi is insufficient. Avoid strenuous activities. General fatigue is tolerable, but sexual exhaustion leads to death, characterized by the tongue protruding several inches." His wife heard of his recovery and traveled over a hundred li to visit him. They engaged in intercourse after one night. Three days later, he developed fever and trismus (lockjaw). At the moment of death, his tongue protruded several inches.
If sexual activity is engaged in within one hundred days of recent recovery, before strength has fully returned, death is almost inevitable. A man named Shi Gaizheng, sixty days after recovery, was able to ride horses and hunt. After engaging in sexual activity, he vomited saliva and died. Sexual activity during febrile diseases is called "Yin-Yang Yi" disease, which is difficult to treat and often fatal. Recently, a scholar-official suffered from Shanghan (Cold Damage). Ten days after slight recovery, he could ride horses back and forth, believing himself fully recovered. After engaging in sexual activity, he suffered from acute lower abdominal pain and spasms of the hands and feet, leading to death.
If meats and noodles are consumed within five days of recovering from seasonal illnesses, the disease will recur, causing extreme debility.
If alcohol and leeks are consumed shortly after recovering from seasonal illnesses, the disease will recur.
If raw fish is consumed immediately after recovering from seasonal illnesses, diarrhea will persist indefinitely.
If raw vegetables are consumed immediately after recovering from seasonal illnesses, complexion will never fully recover permanently.
If cold water is drunk after sweating resolves following seasonal illnesses, the Pericardium (Xinbao) is damaged, leading to chronic weakness and failure to recover.
If raw dates and mutton are consumed immediately after recovering from seasonal illnesses, steaming heat will arise in the upper chest/diaphragm area.
If sheep and dog meats are consumed immediately after recovering from seasonal illnesses, steaming heat will arise in the bones.
If fish, meat, melons, and raw vegetables are consumed immediately after recovering from seasonal illnesses, body heat will increase (another version states swelling).
If garlic and minced meat are consumed immediately after recovering from seasonal illnesses, recurrence of the disease will lead to extreme debility.
