(Discussion: One piece; Formulas: Twenty-nine; Moxibustion Method: One)
Discussion states: The *Suwen* (Basic Questions of the Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic) records that when wind pathogen invades the interior of the muscles, the muscle surface becomes deficient. The dispersion of true qi is further constrained by cold pathogen. The skin exerts outwardly, the couli (pores and interstices of the skin) open, and the lanugo (fine body hair) stands erect. Abnormal qi moves recklessly within, resulting in pruritus (itching). Therefore, wind urticaria with itching arises from this cause. There is also red urticaria, which suddenly appears as if bitten by mosquitoes or midges, causing extreme restlessness and itching. It rises in overlapping layers, and upon scratching, wheals rise along the scratch marks. There is also white urticaria, which presents similarly. Red urticaria erupts during fever and ceases when cold; white urticaria erupts on cloudy and cold days. White urticaria is suitable for wiping with boiled alum solution, or bathing with boiled Asplenium/Adiantum species (Shuobi, referring to fern-like medicinal plants) mixed with a small amount of wine, which is beneficial. (Yao's method advocates using this for red urticaria. Alternatively, wiping with boiled Pterocaryopsis fraxinifolia juice is effective. All other aspects follow the treatment methods for erysipelas.)
Formula for treating sixty-four types of wind pathogens, where abnormal fluids flow into the skin feeling like insects crawling, accompanied by stiffness and rigidity of the waist and spine, simultaneous flaccidity and spasticity of the limbs (five slacknesses and six tensions), spasms of hands and feet, wind rash (urticaria-like dermatosis) turning into sores upon scratching, "Fengshi" (a TCM disease term referring to body itching caused by wind), sudden swelling of the face and eyes, inability to raise hands above the head, trismus (lockjaw) and inability to speak. (This formula is found in Volume VIII, chapter "Wind Aphasia". Although this formula is listed under wind rash, it is effective for all cases of wind rash.)
Formula for treating wind-induced wind rash with pruritus, mental confusion, and oppression:
