Formulas for treatment.
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, one jin) Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, six liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, two liang) Jingsmi (Oryzae Semen, six he)
The above four ingredients are cut into small pieces, boiled in twelve dou of water until the rice is soft, then filtered to remove dregs. Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, three liang) is added, and the mixture is decocted to obtain three sheng of liquid. This is divided into three doses. After taking the medicine, cover the patient to induce sweating. If the patient first feels cold, then becomes feverish and sweats, they will recover.
Formula for inducing sweating to treat malaria.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, each four liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, one liang)
The above four ingredients are cut into small pieces, boiled in seven sheng of water to obtain two and a half sheng of liquid. This is divided into three doses. One dose is taken approximately one meal's time before the onset of symptoms, and another dose is taken just before the onset. After taking the medicine, cover the patient thickly to induce profuse sweating.
Formula for treating malaria that occurs every other day or at night:
Hengshan (Dichroae Radix) Zhuye (Bambusae Folium, each one liang) Shumi (Sorghi Fructus, one hundred grains) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, eight liang)
The above four ingredients are cut into small pieces, soaked in a copper vessel, and placed outdoors under the stars and moon in a clean, high place with a knife laid across it. On the next day, take the medicine, boil it slowly in a copper vessel in the patient's room to obtain three sheng of liquid. Divide into three doses: one dose in the early morning, one dose approximately one meal's time before onset, and one dose just before onset. After completing the three doses, lie quietly in a quiet room without speaking to others. Do not wash face, hands, or rinse mouth, and do not eat on that day. Only after the episode has passed without recurrence should one bathe and eat. Apply the medicinal juice to the five centers (palms and soles), chest, head, and face. Place the medicinal dregs near the head. This method has been found extremely effective. (Jiuji Fang uses fourteen Wumei / Prunus mume seed).
Another formula: First prepare lamb meat pancakes and eat until full. Drink a small amount of wine according to one's capacity, ensuring a pleasant state with alcohol aroma. Enter a sealed room, light charcoal fire, cover thickly, and induce profuse sweating for recovery.
Another formula: Burn the black hair from the tip of an ox's tail to ash. Take one fangcun bi (a square inch measure) with wine, three times daily.
Discussion on treating malaria cannot list all formulas completely.
Hengshan (Dichroae Radix) Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, each eighteen zhu) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, one liang)
The above five ingredients are ground into powder, mixed with honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take five pills on an empty stomach, twice daily. If ineffective, gradually increase the dose until recovery. (Zhouhou Beiji Fang does not include Dahuang).
Another formula: For malaria persisting for several years without cure, two doses will cure; for monthly recurring malaria, one dose will cure.
Take three liang of Hengshan (Dichroae Radix), grind into powder, mix with egg white (Jizi Bai), and hand-roll into pills the size of wutong seeds. Place in a copper vessel. Boil in water until cooked and the fishy smell is removed. Take twenty pills with Zhu Ye Yin (decoction of Bambusae Folium). If nausea occurs, allow vomiting until the attack subsides enough to take three doses. Fasting is allowed in the morning but not in the evening; one may consume a small amount of millet porridge cooked with Zhu Ye juice.
