Formulas for treating jaundice where the body, face, and eyes are completely yellow.
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (each 3 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (2 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) (each 1 liang), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (14 pieces).
The above seven herbs are chopped, decocted in one dou of water until three sheng remain, divided into three doses, taken three times a day. This formula is also used to treat Jiudan (Alcoholic Jaundice) and Jupi (Alcoholic Mass).
Treatment as mentioned above.
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 4 liang).
The above three herbs are processed and sifted into fine powder. Take one fangcunbi (a measure equivalent to a square inch spoonful) before meals, three times a day. It can also be made into pills.
Formula for treating jaundice by promoting urination.
Zhuling (Polypori Porriah), Fuling (Poria), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (each 30 zhu).
The above five herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. When thirsty, take one fangcunbi with water. Drinking copious amounts of water will promote urination, and sweating will lead to recovery (this formula is identical to the one in Volume 9).
Formula for jaundice characterized by scanty drinking but frequent urination.
Qinjiao (Sichuan Pepper), Gouti (Melon Seed) (half liang).
The above two herbs are processed and sifted. Take one fangcunbi with water, three times a day.
For jaundice where urine color is not distinct, accompanied by spontaneous diarrhea, abdominal fullness, and wheezing, heat-clearing should not be used; clearing heat will inevitably cause hiccups.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (each half jin).
The above two herbs are chopped, decocted in seven sheng of water until one sheng and five he remain, divided into two doses. There are cases of people who died from chronic accumulation of qi stagnation, yet their heart region remained warm; entering a small amount of this decoction revived them.
Another formula for jaundice:
Take fresh wheat seedlings, crush and squeeze out the juice. Drink six or seven he, three or four times during day and night. Recovery occurs within three to four days. If wheat is unavailable, barley may be used.
Formula for jaundice transformed into Heidan (Black Jaundice), which physicians cannot cure:
Tugua Gen (Trichosanthes Kirilowii Root) juice, one xiao sheng, taken at once, once a day. Take from dawn until mealtime. The pathogen exits via urination. First, assess the patient's strength; do not overdose. If strength declines, the patient may become unable to rise.
Formula for jaundice where the body, face, and eyes are entirely yellow like gold, urine is like concentrated boiled Platycladi Orientalis bark juice, and conventional physicians fail to treat:
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (each 2 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shengma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (each 3 liang), Longdan (Gentianae Radix) (2 liang).
The above seven herbs are chopped, decocted in eight sheng of water until two sheng and seven he remain, divided into three doses. If the body is emaciated, remove Dahuang and add Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen) five or six liang, and Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) one sheng. (Yannian Milu lacks Yinchen, has Zhizi 4 liang, Gualou 3 liang, Mangxiao 2 liang; Jinxiao Fang adds Zhishi 2 liang.)
If jaundice has persisted for a long time and changed to the color of peach skin, with hardness under the heart, vomiting and inability to eat, extremely red and scanty urine, cold limbs, and a pulse that is deep, extremely minute, thin, and slow, this formula should not be used. Administration will inevitably lead to transformation of the disease. Instead, use Da Yinchen Tang (Large Yinchen Decoction) without Dahuang, adding Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) 5 liang. After finishing the decoction, observe the pulse. If it becomes slightly floating, visible but small, and no longer deep and minute, treatment can proceed. If the pulse floats, the jaundice should clear, the peach-skin color will disappear, and the chest will feel relaxed.
