Formula for treating Yellow Sweat (Huang Han).
Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (five liang), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (three liang), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) (three liang).
The above three herbs are cut into pieces. Decoct with one sheng of vinegar and seven sheng of water to obtain three sheng of liquid. Drink one sheng at a time. Heart vexation (Xin Fan, a sensation of restlessness and heat in the chest) will occur after ingestion; by the sixth or seventh day, it will gradually resolve on its own.
Heart vexation occurs due to the obstructive nature of vinegar.
For treating various types of Jaundice (Huang Dan), promoting urination is appropriate. If the pulse is floating, use a formula to resolve the exterior through sweating.
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (each three liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (two liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (five liang), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) (twelve fruits).
The above six herbs are cut into pieces. Decoct with eight sheng of water over mild fire to obtain three sheng of liquid. Remove the dregs. Take one sheng warm. Cover with blankets to induce slight sweating. If sweating does not occur shortly after, drink hot thin porridge to assist the decoction's action. If still no sweat, take the decoction again.
Formula for treating Jaundice caused by Heat from Taiyang disease emerging to the exterior: Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) three liang, decoct with five sheng of pure wine to obtain one and a half sheng. Take all at once. Cover warmly to induce sweating for cure. In winter when cold is prevalent, use clear wine; in spring, water is suitable.
Formula for treating Jaundice (Huang Dan):
Gouti (Coccum), Shumi (Setariae Italicae Semen Glutinatum), Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Radiati Semen) (each fourteen seeds).
The above three herbs are processed and sifted. For severe cases, take an amount equivalent to two soybean-sized portions, insert into the nostrils. Pain will cause nasal contraction. Shortly thereafter, yellow fluid will discharge or flow from the mouth; this indicates cure. For mild cases, use an amount equivalent to one bean. If not cured, repeat every other day. Additionally, a method circulated among neighbors involves using a bamboo tube to blow forcefully into the nose; this invariably leads to death. Exercise extreme caution. (From *Shanfan*: Treating epidemic toxic heat penetrating the zang-fu organs and sinking into the bone marrow, potentially causing diseases such as Jaundice, Black Jaundice, Red Jaundice, White Jaundice, Grain Jaundice, or Horse Yellow, characterized by incessant rapid breathing.)
Treatment is the same as above.
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen) (each two liang).
The above two herbs are ground into powder, mixed with honey to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take ten pills before meals, three times daily. Discontinue when the disease resolves.
Another formula: Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (two liang), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (three liang), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (one liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (one liang), Quyi (Medicinal Leaven Husk) (five he).
The above five herbs are ground into powder, mixed with honey to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take three pills before meals, three times daily. If ineffective, increase to five pills.
