Treatment for children with Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm) accumulated in the abdomen, causing frequent abdominal pain, slight discharge of white mucus, vomiting, chest tightness, alternating chills and fever, inability of diet to nourish muscles and skin, emaciation with sallow complexion, and weakness of the four limbs unable to lift. Formula:
Miwu (Changium smyrnioides Root), Guanzhong (Cyrtomium fortunei Rhizome), Leiwan (Wormwood Fruit/Albizia Seed - *Note: Traditional term often refers to specific anti-parasitic herbs*), Shanzhuyu (Cornus Officinalis Fruit), Tiandong (Asparagus Cochinchinensis Rhizome), Yelangya (Pyrethrum Parthenium Flower Head) (each 8 fen); Lu (*Specific herb name retained as per text*, possibly a typo or local variant), Ganju (Chrysanthemum Morifolium Flower) (each 4 fen).
Grind the above eight ingredients into powder, mix with honey to make pills the size of soybeans. For three-year-olds, take five pills with warm water; for those over five years old, adjust dosage gradually up to ten pills. Adding 6 fen of Lu creates "Lu Wan," which treats various diseases in the elderly, children, and women. It is effective for conditions where cold and heat qi in the abdomen are blocked, sudden abdominal distension and pain, hardness and fullness in the chest and diaphragm, irritability and heat in hands and feet, rebellious qi, inability to eat, generalized edema, immobility of waist and legs, sounds in the abdomen resembling a toad's croak, and irregular menstruation in women.
Formula for treating Ascaris lumbricoides:
Take Lu powder, mix with water, and administer one fangcun bi (a square inch measure). If ineffective, increase the dose. (*Beiji Fang* treats Enterobius vermicularis/threadworm).
Formula for treating heat disease complicated by Ascaris lumbricoides causing inner restlessness (Aonao):
Lu (10 fen), Ganqi (Dry Lacquer), Bianzhu (Bamboo Leaf/Shoot - *Context dependent*) (each 2 fen).
Process the above three ingredients, sieve them, and take one he (a liquid measure) mixed with rice decoction, three times a day.
Formula for treating gradual emaciation caused by Ascaris lumbricoides in the stomach:
Ganqi (Dry Lacquer; *Waitai Mi Yao* uses Yan/Salt), Chunjiu (Pure Wine), Bami (White Honey) (each 1 sheng).
Place the above three ingredients in a copper vessel and simmer gently over low fire until they can be formed into a pill the size of a peach pit. Take with warm wine after fasting overnight. The worms will likely be expelled. If not, take again. (*Waitai Mi Yao* treats Enterobius vermicularis/threadworm).
Another formula: Take Lianshi (Toona sinensis fruit), soak it in pure sour wine for two nights. Wrap in cotton cloth, insert into the anus about three cun deep, and change once a day. (*Jiyan Fang* treats long [worms]).
Formula for treating abdominal pain caused by Ascaris lumbricoides attacking the heart:
Finely chop Yiyigen (Coix Root) three jin, boil in seven sheng of water until reduced to three sheng. Take before meals; the worms will die and be expelled.
Another formula: Grind Heshi (Nigella Sativa Seed) into powder, take one fangcun bi with sour wine on an empty stomach; this is better.
Another formula: Collect Jilizi (Tribulus Terrestris Fruit) on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, dry in shade, burn to ash, and take one fangcun bi before meals, three times a day, for recovery.
Formula for treating Taenia saginata/pork tapeworm (Cunbai Chong):
Wuzhuyu Xigen (Fine roots of Evodia Rutaecarpa) (one handful, pounded熟ly), Dama Zi (Hemp Seed) (three sheng, roasted, pounded into powder).
Mix the above two ingredients with three sheng of water, knead to extract juice, and take all at once in the early morning. At Si hour (9-11 AM), eat a good meal until full. Shortly after, the worms will be expelled. If not cured, prepare and take again the next morning. If still not cured, take every three days. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* treats three types of parasites, soaked in wine, take the juice).
Another formula: Wuyi (Melia Azedarach Fruit) (6 fen), Yelangya (Pyrethrum Parthenium Flower Head) (4 fen), Bailian (Pueraria Lobata Root Skin) (2 fen).
Process the above three ingredients, sieve them, mix with two he of sour wine, let stand overnight, and take on an empty stomach the next morning.
Another formula: Humo (Sesame Seed) (1 sheng), Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate/White Lead) (1 liang).
Grind the above two ingredients into powder. In the early morning on an empty stomach, consume completely with pork juice; this leads to recovery.
Another formula: Take 49 Feizi (Torreya Grandis Seed), remove the shell. On the first ten days of the month, take seven pills in the early morning on an empty stomach. Finish within seven days; the worms will dissolve into water, ensuring permanent cure.
Another formula: Take one sheng of dried fine roots of Wuzhuyu from the north-facing shaded side, remove soil, slice, and soak in one sheng of wine overnight. Divide into two doses taken in the early morning. For all Wuzhuyu, use fine roots from the east-facing, north-shaded parts. Roots thicker than a finger should not be used.
Another formula: Use Pomegranate Root (Shiliugen) in the same manner as Wuzhuyu, or it can be boiled in water and taken.
Another formula: Extract juice from Hemp (Dama), divide five sheng into five doses. This also treats pediatric Ascaris lumbricoides.
Another formula: Boil two sheng of good sesame oil until cooked, add three cun of green onion white until blackened and cooked through, cool down, and take in one dose.
Another formula: Boil Yi (Malt Sugar) until very dry, grind into powder, mix one fangcun bi into mutton soup, and take.
Another formula: Cut Sanggen Baipi (Mulberry Root Bark) three sheng, boil in seven sheng of water until reduced to two sheng. Fast overnight, and take in one dose on an empty stomach in the early morning.
Another formula: Process fourteen Binglang (Areca Nut), sieve them. Boil two and a half sheng of water, first boil the peel to reduce to one and a half sheng, remove dregs, add the powder, and take in one dose. This warms the body to expel worms. If not fully expelled, prepare and take again until cured. Fast overnight, take in the morning.
Discussion: Generally, when contracting Shanghan (Cold Damage) or epidemic heat diseases, if there is heat in the abdomen, combined with poor appetite and empty intestines/stomach, the "Three Worms" (parasites) move seeking food, eroding the five zang organs and the lower orifices. If the gums are colorless, the tongue is entirely white, severe cases have sores inside the lips, limbs feel heavy, the person feels vague and sleepy, frequently check the upper lip interior. If there are sores or blood in saliva, or millet-grain-like sores inside the lips, it indicates inner restlessness and pain. This means the worms are eroding the five zang organs from above. If sores appear on the lower lip interior, the person likes to sleep, indicating worms eroding the lower part. People often do not realize this. One can take these vermifuge drugs; otherwise, the worms may cause death. It is also said that patients suffering from Shi Li (Damp Dysentery) often do so after a heat disease or due to prolonged diarrhea, or because guest-heat accumulates in the abdomen, or due to climate/water-soil adaptation issues. There are also cases of Dry Li with mild diarrhea but itching sores in the lower part. Whether damp or dry, if prolonged, it is fatal. For damp dysentery aggravated by cold, single decoctions of Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Aiye (Mugwort Leaf), Kushen (Sophora Flavescens Root), etc., can be used. If the patient has colorless gums, a white tongue, prefers sleeping, feels irritable and confused, loses sensation of pain/itch, or has dysentery, urgently treat the lower part. Those who do not understand this only attack the upper part and ignore the lower part. Sores in the lower part, worm erosion of the anus, rotting of the anus exposing internal organs, lead to death. Treat by moxibustion using a bamboo tube.
Formula for treating Shanghan parasitic disease:
Crack the small end of a raw egg, pour out the white. Add one he of lacquer, stir thoroughly until uniform. When foam appears, put it back into the shell. Swallow while lying on your back. After a meal time or half a day, vomit or pass the worms. Severe cases take another dose; once worms are gone, heat subsides, and the disease heals.
Formula for treating Damp Dysentery (Shi Li):
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) (10 fen), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) (10 fen), Kushen (Sophora Flavescens Root) (4 fen), Aiye (Artemisia Argyi Leaf) (8 fen).
Cut the above four ingredients, boil in one dou of water until reduced to three sheng. Divide into three doses. For chronic cases, take three courses of treatment.
