If there has been a history of threatened miscarriage or abortion at one month of gestation, this prescription should be taken prophylactically.
Asari Radix (1 liang) Saposhnikoviae Radix (2 liang) Prepared Rehmanniae Radix Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (each 3 liang) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (4 liang) Evodiae Fructus Hordeum Vulgare (each 5 he) Mume Fructus (1 sheng)
The above eight ingredients are crushed, decocted in seven sheng of water to obtain two and a half sheng, divided into three doses, taken before meals. In cases with excessive cold, double the dosage of Asari Radix and Evodiae Fructus. In cases with excessive heat and thirst, remove these herbs and add Trichosanthis Radix (2 liang). If there is mental preoccupation or anxiety, remove Hordeum Vulgare and add Plagiocampsis Semen (3 he). (Another version includes Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang.)
Gestation at two months is termed "Shi Gao" (beginning of fat formation); avoid consuming pungent and fishy foods; the living environment must be quiet; the husband should avoid overexertion; pain throughout all joints occurs, which marks the initial formation of the fetus.
At two months of gestation, the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian nourishes the fetus; acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian are contraindicated (such as Danqiao [GB-20], Qiuxu [GB-40], Fuyang [GB-38], Jiexi [GB-41 - *Note: Text says Juegu/Abegul, likely referring to Xianguan GB-39 or similar*, Waili [not standard], Yanglingquan [GB-34] acupoints). The Foot-Shaoyang meridian internally connects to the Gallbladder, governing essence. At two months, the fetal essence forms within the uterus; careful protection against fright and disturbance is required.
At two months of gestation, Yin and Yang qi occupy the meridians. Excessive cold may cause fetal damage and failure to develop; excessive heat leads to fetal withering and emaciation. Contracting wind-cold causes instability, resulting in chest fullness and hanging pain below the umbilicus.
