Formulas for treating wind-induced epilepsy and mania.
Formula for wind-induced epilepsy:
Owl head (one piece), Descurainiae Semen (Tinglizi), Lead tetroxide (Qiandan), Arisaema cum Bile (Huzhang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Wutou), Trichosanthis Radix (Gualougen) (each 3 fen), Kansui Radix (Gansui), Aconiti Radix (Tianxiong), Sichuan pepper (Shujiao), Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix (Daji) (each 2 fen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) (1 fen), Alisma Orientale (Ruyu), Iron powder (Tiejing) (each 1 liang).
Grind the above thirteen ingredients into fine powder, mix with honey to make pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take two pills with wine, three times a day.
Another formula for treating epilepsy with convulsions:
Lead tetroxide (Qiandan, 1 jin), Processed owl head (Fei Chitou, 2 pieces).
Grind the above two ingredients into fine powder, mix with honey to make pills. Take three pills before meals, three times a day. For severe cases, take one dose at night, gradually increasing the dosage.
Yet another formula:
Scopoliae Fructus (Bangdangzi), 3 sheng, crushed and sifted. Soak in 1 dou of wine for half a day, strain to remove dregs, boil in water until it can be formed into pills. Take two pills the size of a mung bean before meals, gradually increase to two pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. The treatment is considered effective when symptoms subside; redness appearing along the skin lines on the forehead and palms indicates efficacy. If this sign does not appear, continue taking the medicine. For daily attacks, cure in three days; for every-other-day attacks, cure in ten days; for attacks every five days, cure in twenty days; for attacks once every six months, cure in one month.
Formula for treating yin-deficiency epilepsy and mania:
Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang), 30 jin; Asparagi Radix (Tianmendong), 10 jin.
Crush the above two ingredients to extract juice, boil down into an electuary. Take for recovery.
Universal formula for treating major wind syndromes, dysentery, weakness, five exhaustions and seven injuries of the five zang and six fu organs, phlegm-stasis, qi stagnation, cold-heat wind syndromes, epilepsy, malignant diseases, deafness, headache due to wind, limb stiffness and spasms, progressive joint pain, etc. Long-term use treats myriad diseases, lightens the body, prolongs life, regenerates lost teeth, and turns white hair black.
Extract 2 dou of juice from Asparagi Radix (Tianmendong). Use 2 sheng of yeast starter and 2 dou of glutinous rice. Brew according to household methods. In spring and summer, add ingredients when extremely cold; in autumn and winter, maintain temperature similar to human skin. Once fermented, drink one cup. Maintain a continuous mild alcohol sensation without inducing vomiting. Avoid raw, cold, sour, slippery foods, chicken, pork, fish, garlic, especially carp and greasy foods. This method uses two dou of juice; scaling up to one dan and two dou follows the same ratio. After ten days of ingestion, one may feel intense itching from skin rashes; after twenty days, the itching intensifies; after thirty days, it subsides. This is due to the expulsion of wind pathogens. After forty days, one feels mentally and physically clear and joyful. After fifty days, even sitting or lying in the wind, one feels no wind impact, and all internal wind pathogens are eliminated.
Method for using rice: Wash rice thoroughly, dry it. Before use, soak the rice in Asparagi Radix juice, drain, and steam. Mix remaining juice with the cooked rice, seal tightly, and press.
Method for extracting Asparagi Radix juice: Clean Asparagi Radix, remove heart and peel, drain water, chop, and press to extract juice. Repeat three to four times until the residue is dry.
The newly brewed wine tastes sour and has a foul smell initially. Follow the instructions strictly; upon long-term storage, it becomes fragrant and delicious. Sealing for forty-seven days is optimal. Prepare small batches in August and September, larger batches in October, to be consumed continuously until May thirtieth of the following year. Do not brew in April. Taking the wine with powder enhances efficacy twofold.
Powder formula: Peel and remove the heart of Asparagi Radix, dry, and grind into powder. Take one cun-bi (a square-inch measure) with the aforementioned wine, three times a day, gradually increasing to three cun-bi. Long-term use promotes longevity. Ordinary wine can also be used.
