Treats toxic swelling with uncertain location, or presenting with redness and aversion to cold, or stabbing pain and restlessness in the heart and abdomen; this is caused by deep-seated and severe toxic qi. Formula:
Hemp Seed (Cannabis Fructus), Adzuki Bean (Vigna angularis); each 5 sheng. Raw Phytolacca Root (Phytolaccae Radix) 3 sheng. Prepared Aconite Root (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 2 liang. Belamcanda Rhizome (Belamcandae Rhizoma) 3 liang. Cimicifuga Rhizome (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 4 liang.
The above six herbs are coarsely crushed. Boil in 4 dou of water. First decoct the first four herbs, reduce to 2.5 dou, remove dregs. Then crush the hemp seeds finely, mix with the decoction, boil once, remove dregs. Use this liquid to decoct the adzuki beans until soft. Take 5 he per dose, twice during the day and once at night. The treatment should continue until urination becomes profuse. When the swelling subsides, the patient recovers. Consume the beans as well.
Treats all types of swollen toxins with unbearable pain. Formula:
Take ripe Castor Seed (Ricini Semen), mash thoroughly, and apply topically. Recovery follows.
Treats various sores that recur after forming a white crust. Formula:
Garlic Bulb (Allii Sativi Bulbus), Rat Feces (Rattus Fructus), Ink Stick (Moxa Ink/Soot). Equal parts.
Grind the above three ingredients into powder. Apply topically three times daily.
Treats furuncles (boils). Formula:
For furuncles without a head, swallow one Okra Seed (Abelmoschi Esculenti Semen). Do not take in large quantities.
Another formula: Fresh Sichuan Pepper Powder (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), Soil from under the cooking pot (Fossa Cineres). Equal parts.
Grind the above two ingredients into powder, mix with vinegar, and apply topically. (Qianjin Yifang includes Yeast Powder [Qu Mo], making it a three-ingredient formula).
Another formula: Dog Skull Bone (Canis Cranium), Rapeseed (Brassicae Napus Semen). Equal parts.
Grind the above two ingredients into powder, mix with vinegar, and apply topically.
Another formula: Apply leaves and roots of Burdock (Arctii Lappa).
Another formula: Mix Sparrow Droppings (Passer Domesticus Excrementum) with water and apply topically.
Another formula: Burn vine ash from Kudzu (Puerariae Lobatae Caulis) and apply as a plaster; the swelling will resolve spontaneously. Ash from Cow Dung (Bovis Fel Culina Cinis) applied topically is also effective.

Discussion: All cases of "Fa Bei" (Back Carbuncle/Erysipelas of the back) are caused by taking Five-Mineral Powders (Wu Shi San), Han Shi Geng Sheng San, or similar mineral drugs. Some cases arise from taking only Stalactite (Gypsum Fibrosum/Hydrocerussite confusion in ancient texts, here likely referring to mineral deposits like Zhuru/Stalactite). Inherited usage from ancestors may also be a factor. The symptoms usually appear between the two scapulae on the back. Initially, it resembles a millet grain in size, accompanied by pain or itching, and reddish color. People often ignore it initially, but it grows day by day, leading to death within ten days. At the critical stage, the lesion is three cun wide and one cun high, with dozens of pores. Pressing with hands causes pus to exude from all pores. Voice loss occurs immediately. Therefore, those practicing health preservation should, upon feeling any unusual itching or pain on the back, urgently take clean earth, mix with water to form mud, shape into cakes (thickness: 2 fen, width: 1.5 cun). Apply coarse moxa cones on the mud cake placed over the sore. Replace the mud cake after each cone burns out. If treated when the size is like a millet grain, seven applications may cure it. If the size is like an elm seed, forty-nine applications may cure it. If the size is like a coin, moxibustion can be performed day and night without limit on the number of cones, while simultaneously administering Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang (Five-Spice Forsythia Decoction) (see this volume, Abscess and Ulcer section). Treat further with Iron Slag Water (Tie Jiang) and other medications for recovery. Another method: For Fa Bei before large abscess formation, spray cold water on the area, soak stones until cold, and apply as a cold compress continuously day and night until recovery. This disease contraindicates wheat products, alcohol, and the Five Pungent Spices (Wu Xin). It may also occur on both shoulders.
Anyone taking mineral drugs must engage in physical labor to avoid comfort/stasis. Failure to do so often triggers attacks. One must not seek warmth arbitrarily or indulge in comfort; instead, one must restrain desires and endure cold. Although uncomfortable initially, it benefits the body later and prevents future attacks.
When swelling arises between the back and scapulae, with a white head like millet, surrounded by connected red-black swelling, causing mental agitation, it is named Fa Bei. Contraindications include sexual activity, meat, alcohol, wheat products, and garlic. Without moxibustion treatment, the toxin enters internally and causes death. Moxibustion should consist of 700-800 moxa cones directly on the sore. Ignorance leads to misdiagnosis as general swelling, resulting in death.
Treats Fa Bei and carbuncles/swellings, whether ulcerated or non-ulcerated. Formula:
Fermented Soybean Paste (Douchi) 3 sheng, add a little water, cook thoroughly, and mash into a thin paste. Shape according to the swelling into cakes (thickness > 3 fen). Do not cover existing pores. Place the Douchi cake on the sore, arrange moxa cones on top, and moxibustate until warm. Ensure heat does not burn the skin. If painful due to heat, replace immediately. Symptoms will subside, providing relief. Perform moxibustion twice daily. If pores previously existed and discharge fluid, recovery occurs.
Treats carbuncles, Fa Bei (ulcerated/non-ulcerated), and all swollen toxins. Formula:
Trichosanthes Root (Trichosanthis Radix), Elm Inner Bark (Ulmus Alba Cortex), Swallow Nest Mud (Hirundo Nidus), Mouse Hole Soil (Mus Tunnellus Terra). Equal parts.
Grind the above four ingredients into powder. Wash women's menstrual cloth to extract juice, mix with powder to form a mud-like paste. Apply to the swelling. Change when dry. For ulcerated cases, apply around the four sides. Apply as soon as symptoms are felt. Recovery within one to five days.
Treats Fa Bei, specifically when a carbuncle is just beginning to form on the back. Formula:
Rhubarb Root (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Scutellaria Root (Scutellariae Radix), Licorice Root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma); each 3 liang. Gardenia Fruit (Gardeniae Fructus) 37 pieces.
Coarsely crush the above five herbs. Decoct in 9 sheng of water, reduce to 3 sheng. Divide into two doses. Stop when bowel movement is smooth; if not smooth, administer again.
