Treatise says: Generally, disorders of "Qi Extreme" primarily involve the Lung. The Lung governs Qi, and Qi combines with the Lung. It is also said: Illness contracted in autumn is called Skin Bi (Pib). If Skin Bi does not resolve, and the pathogen is contracted again, it enters internally and resides in the Lung, causing Cold-Dampness to lodge in the Six Fu organs. If the Lung is diseased, Qi disorder manifests first, with Qi rushing upward to the chest, often accompanied by irritability. Contracting Wind-Pathogen on Geng-Xin days in autumn leads to Lung Wind; symptoms of Lung Wind include profuse sweating. If Yin is injured, Cold arises; Cold leads to Deficiency, which causes Qi counterflow and cough; coughing results in shortness of breath, worsening at dusk. When Yin Qi arrives, Dampness generates, hence there is extreme aversion to Yang Qi, and symptoms improve during the day. If Yang is injured, Heat arises; Heat leads to Excess, which causes panting, Qi rushing to the chest, belching, and in severe cases, hemoptysis. However, Yang diseases are treated by addressing Yin, as Yin is the interior; Yin diseases are treated by addressing Yang, as Yang is the exterior. This explains the source of decline and prosperity in Yin-Yang and Exterior-Interior relationships. Thus, one knows to use Yang to harmonize Yin, and Yin to harmonize Yang. When Yang Qi is Excess, it leads to resolution/opening; when Yin Qi is Deficient, it leads to drawing/pulling. A skilled healer treats the disease when it initially enters the skin, hair, muscles, and meridians. If it reaches the Six Fu and Five Zang organs, half of the patients will die.
Bian Que said: Qi exhaustion is incurable; if accompanied by panting and cold sweat, death occurs within two days. The Qi pulse corresponds to the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. When Hand-Taiyin Qi exhausts, the skin and hair become dry and brittle, and Qi dies first.
