(One treatise, fifty-five prescriptions, six moxibustion methods)
Prescription for treating nasal congestion, cold head, and discharge of clear rhinorrhea.
Tongcao (Platycodonis Radix), Xinyi (Magnoliae Flos) (each 0.5 liang), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Gansui (Euphorbiae Kansui Radix) (or Gancao [Glycyrrhizae Radix]), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (each 1 liang).
The above seven herbs are powdered, mixed with honey to form pills, wrapped in silk gauze, and inserted into the nasal cavity. The opening should be sealed tightly to prevent the escape of medicinal vapor. The pill should be the size of a hemp seed; gradually increase the dosage until a slight pain is felt. If ginger is pounded and added to the pills, it is curative. It is even better to mix them with bile from a white dog.
Prescription for treating nasal congestion with frequent discharge of clear rhinorrhea.
Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Shujiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (each 18 zhu), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (1 liang), Zaojiao xie (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus powder) (0.5 liang), Zhugao (Suis Medulla) (1 sheng).
The above nine herbs are coarsely chopped, wrapped in silk gauze, soaked in vinegar (Ku Jiu) overnight, then decocted with pig fat. Decoct until the color of Fuzi turns yellow, filter out the dregs, wrap the liquid in silk gauze, insert into the nostrils, and massage the nose. If rhinorrhea does not stop, apply seven moxa cones at the two sides of the nose level with the bridge of the nose.
Prescription for aromatic ointment to treat nasal obstruction.
Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla) (each 18 zhu), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Mangcao (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) (In *Duanju* and *Yi*, written as Xuncao), Xinyi (Magnoliae Flos) (each 30 zhu).
The above seven herbs are coarsely chopped, soaked in vinegar overnight, and decocted with one sheng of pig adipose tissue that has not touched water. Perform three ascents and descents of boiling. When Baizhi turns yellow and the ointment is ready, filter out the dregs. Dip silk gauze into the ointment, take an amount the size of a jujube pit, and insert it into the nasal cavity, three times a day (*Duanju* adds Guixin 18 zhu).
Prescription for aromatic ointment to treat nasal dysfunction.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Xuncao (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) (*Gujin Lu Yan* uses Muxiang [Aucklandiae Radix]), Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Ruiren (Pruni Armeniacae Semen), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (each 0.5 liang), Yangsui (Ovis Medulla) (4 liang; Sui Fat [pig fat] is also acceptable).
The above eight herbs are coarsely chopped and decocted over low heat, performing three ascents and descents. When Baizhi turns yellow and the ointment is ready, filter out the dregs. Take an amount the size of a mung bean and insert it into the nasal cavity, twice a day. For those who previously suffered from heat causing red, ulcerated sores in the nose, substitute Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) for Danggui and Xixin.
Prescription for treating nasal obstruction and blocked breathing.
Xiaoji (Cirsii Herba) one handful, coarsely chopped, decocted in three sheng of water to obtain one sheng, divided into two doses.
Another prescription: A small amount of Goudi powder (Momordicae Fructus) blown into the nasal cavity, or wrapped in silk gauze and stuffed into the nose.
Another prescription: Huaiye (Mori Folium) (5 sheng), Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) (chopped, 1 sheng), Chi (Sojae Semens Preparatum) (1 he).
The above three herbs are decocted in five sheng of water to obtain three sheng, divided into three warm doses.
Prescription for treating long-term nasal congestion, anosmia, and continuous discharge of clear fluid.
Take one handful of Jili (Tribuli Fructus) that has been run over by carts on the road, pound it, and decoct it in three sheng of water until cooked. First lie supine, have someone hold one he of the juice in their mouth, and irrigate the nasal cavity, ensuring the fluid enters but does not overflow. Induce a violent sneeze again; one or two polyps resembling red pupae will likely be expelled. (Another prescription includes Huanglian [Coptidis Rhizoma] in equal parts, decocted together.)
Prescription for treating Bi Yuan (nasal sinusitis).
Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata).
The above three herbs are powdered in equal parts, mixed with honey, wrapped in a small amount of silk gauze, and inserted into the nasal cavity.
Another prescription: Gansui (Euphorbiae Kansui Radix), Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (equal parts).
The above four herbs are powdered, mixed with the bile of a male white dog to form pills the size of a jujube pit, wrapped in silk gauze, and inserted into the nasal cavity. Discharge of pungent, hot rhinorrhea of four to five sheng indicates recovery. This also treats polyps.
Another prescription: Powder roasted Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus) to the size of a mung bean, and blow it into the nasal cavity using a bamboo tube.
Another prescription: Mix Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) powder with honey, stuff into the nose, or blow it in; both are good.
Another prescription: Grind an iron chain on a whetstone to obtain powder, mix with pig fat, wrap in silk gauze, and insert. After one day, the flesh grows and heals.
Another prescription: Use the juice of fresh horse manure, hold a full mouth while tilting the head back, and irrigate the nasal cavity.
Another prescription: Lie face down before the bed, pour newly drawn cold water over the Yuzhen acupoint, then stuff Goudi powder (Momordicae Fructus) wrapped in silk gauze into the nose.
Prescription for treating nasal polyps and anosmia.
Guding (Momordicae Fructus), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma).
The above two herbs are powdered in equal parts, wrapped in silk gauze to the size of a bean, and stuffed into the nasal cavity. Patency is achieved shortly thereafter.
