To treat infants who have just been born, with flourishing and excess blood vessels, alternating chills and fever, elevated body temperature, convulsions and jerking of the four limbs, high fever accompanied by severe vomiting. If the infant has already begun to take supplementary food but suffers from food stagnation and indigestion, persistent high fever, and unresolved *bianzheng* (physiological fever associated with infant growth and development), or if affected by external pathogenic qi (*kegu*, sudden invasion of evil qi) and various types of wind-stroke epilepsy, this formula treats all such conditions. Children under ten years old may take it; this is Formula No. 1, Xiao'er Longdan Tang (Pediatric Gentian Decoction). This is a formula for newborns; for older infants, adjustments should be made sequentially based on this example. If it is certain that there is *ketu* (sudden fright or external pathogenic invasion) and *baqi* (evil spirit qi), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) may be added, in amounts equal to those of Gentianae Radix (Longdan): for a hundred-day-old infant, add three zhu; for a two-hundred-day-old infant, add six zhu; for a one-year-old infant, add half a liang; the dosages of other herbs remain as specified.
Gentianae Radix (Longdan), Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis (Goutengpi), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao), Poria (Fuling, alternatively Fushen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (each three zhu), Silphii Stool (Qianglang) (two pieces), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) (one liang).
The above ten medicinal materials are cut into small pieces, boiled in one sheng of water until reduced to five he, constituting one dose, administered according to the following guidelines. Medicinal properties vary between deficiency and excess; for deficiency patterns, sufficient water should be used with the full dosage. For infants aged one to seven days after birth, divide one he of decoction into three doses; for eight to fifteen days, divide one and a half he into three doses; for sixteen to twenty days, divide two he into three doses; for twenty to thirty days, divide three he into three doses; for thirty to forty days, administer the entire five he divided into three doses. Stop administration once bowel movements occur; do not re-administer.
A formula to treat pediatric wind-stroke epilepsy, abdominal accumulation, abdominal pain, and limb twisting/convulsions involving twenty-five types of epilepsy.
Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Ganpi/Gancao) (each three zhu).
The above six medicinal materials are cut into small pieces, boiled in one sheng of water until reduced to four he. Administer an amount the size of a jujube pit, three times daily.
A formula to treat pediatric wind-stroke epilepsy with phlegm in the chest.
Cortex Dictamni (Bai Xianpi/Baixianpi, three zhu), Cicadella Viridis (Zachan, two pieces), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, four zhu), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis (Goutengpi), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) (each two zhu), Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang, four pieces the size of soybeans), Ophichthus Skin (Shetuipi, one cun).
The above eight medicinal materials are cut into small pieces, boiled in two and a half sheng of water until reduced to one sheng and two he. Divide into five doses, taken three times daily. If the epilepsy persists after completing the course, increase Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) and Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis (Gouteng) by one zhu each. Soak the herbs in water for half a day before boiling.
