Cui's Formula for Treating All Types of Malaria: Dahuang Wan (Rhubarb Pill).
Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 3 liang) Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 2 liang) Badou (Semen Crotonis, 1 liang, peeled and roasted until black, ground into a paste)
Grind the above three ingredients. First, crush and sieve the Dahuang and Puxiao, then add the Badou. Mix with honey and pound two thousand times. Form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take two pills at a time, administered with rice water. Take twice daily. Continue taking without interruption until the disease is cured. Avoid eating reed shoots, wild boar meat, and other such foods.
Jiuji Formula for Treating All Types of Malaria: Changshan Tang (Dichroa Decoction).
Changshan (Radix Dichroae, 3 liang) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 8 liang, broken and wrapped in cotton) Baishumi (Semen Milii Glutinosi Album, 120 grains) Danzhuye (Folium Phyllostachydis Viridis, one handful)
Soak the above four ingredients in eight sheng of water overnight. Boil to obtain two sheng and five he of liquid. Strain off the dregs. Divide into three warm doses. Take one dose early in the morning, one dose just before the onset of symptoms, and one dose during the actual attack. After completing the three doses, lie down in a quiet room and refrain from talking to others for an extended period. Afterwards, wash hands and face, and eat food. For seven days, avoid overexertion, raw green onions, raw vegetables, alcohol, hot noodles, and toxic fish. For chronic malaria, no more than two doses are needed for cure. Another variation adds fourteen Wu Mei (Fructus Mume), roasted. (From Jiyan Fang, treating intermittent or nocturnal malaria, by Dr. Yao, Volume I)
Gujin Luyan Formula for Treating All Types of Malaria, Highly Effective: Zhusha Wan (Cinnabar Pill).
Zhusha (Cinnabaris, 1 liang) Shu Changshan (Radix Dichroae from Shu region, 3 liang)
Crush and sieve each of the above two ingredients separately. Take the Zhusha and grind it finely in a porcelain vessel until it resembles flour, which takes about a day. Mix with white honey. Have a child pound the mixture seventeen thousand times. Form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take three pills per dose, administered with clear wine. Walk for more than fifty paces after ingestion, then sit or lie down as desired. If wine is unavailable, decoction may be used, but care must be taken to keep the patient warm. If the patient has strong qi and physical strength, and does not usually have attacks while moving normally, administer on the day of the expected attack. If the attack occurs around sunset, do not eat on the day of the attack. Take three pills at dawn, three pills at Si hour (9-11 AM), and three pills in the afternoon. The disease will be cured. If not cured, the condition is likely mild; take another dose to cure. For attacks occurring at other times, refer to the method for sunset attacks and adjust accordingly. If the patient has weak qi and physical strength, do not administer on the day of the attack; instead, administer one day in advance. If the attack is expected tomorrow, take three pills on an empty stomach at dawn today. Eat one bowl of porridge at breakfast time. Take three pills again at sunset. Eat one bowl of light porridge at dusk. Do not eat until full. At the end of the first watch, take three pills. Eat one bowl of porridge at dawn. Take three pills again before breakfast, without eating. Take three pills at noon. The disease will certainly be cured. For three days after recovery, only consume sweet porridge and drinks. Avoid raw/cold, sour/slippery, greasy foods, noodles, and overeating. For seven days, specifically avoid blood-generating foods, raw green onions, and raw vegetables. If there are remaining days after seven, gradually introduce raw/cold foods, but maintain daily prohibitions. If the illness lasted for a hundred days, observe a hundred-day prohibition of raw/cold foods after recovery. Even if the illness lasted seven days, restore the seven-day prohibition of raw/cold foods after recovery. Although the illness may have persisted for many years, if it has been present for a hundred days, prohibit raw/cold foods for over a hundred days; afterwards, eating is permissible. If not prohibited, relapse is certain. For severe, long-standing illnesses, ten doses suffice for cure; for recent illnesses, three to five doses suffice. Patients aged fifteen and above take three pills per dose; patients aged seven to fifteen take two pills per dose; patients under seven take one pill per dose. For smaller children, divide this pill into two small pills and administer. (From Volume IV)
Jinxiao Modified Formula for Treating All Types of Malaria, Universally Effective, Previously Used No More Than Two Doses, Like Magic Upon Ingestion, Never Failing: Taoren Changshan Wan (Peach Kernel and Dichroa Pill).
Taoren (Semen Persicae, 2 liang, not roasted, double kernels and skins not removed) Changshan (Radix Dichroae, 2 liang) Douchi (Folium Sojae Praeparatum, 3 liang)
Crush each of the above three ingredients separately for five to six hundred pestle strikes, then mix and pound together for six to seven hundred strikes. Add good wine until it forms a paste like black mud. If not using wine, administer thirty pills (size of Sophora japonica seeds) with wine. Take before the onset of symptoms, and another thirty pills just before the attack. Hold the pills under the nose and inhale the aroma to stabilize the condition. If not relieved, take another thirty pills. Vomiting or slight diarrhea may occur; do not be alarmed. Some may recover without vomiting or diarrhea. After vomiting, do not rinse the mouth. Also, avoid eating raw green onions, raw vegetables, fruits, sweet substances, and greasy foods; otherwise, recurrence will be difficult to cure. This type of attack usually resolves after two or three doses; most resolve after one dose. The Changshan used must be from the Shu region to be effective. Regarding Taoren: if only one person is sick, prepare a small amount; do not prepare in advance. Lack of efficacy may result from improper preparation. The current formula uses one liang of Changshan, five to seven pieces of Taoren, and one he of Douchi. More is better. Grind Changshan into powder, then grind Taoren into paste. Crush Douchi separately. Add wine and pound for three to five hundred strikes. Mix all together and pound for another six hundred strikes. Administer according to the method.
