Moxibustion methods for treating malaria from the *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold).
Moxibustion is applied to Shangxing (Shangxing, 上星) and Dazhui (Dazhui, 大椎). [Dazhui is located in the depression above the first thoracic vertebra on the back.] At the time of onset, perform one hundred moxa cones (Zhuang, 壮), with each cone the size of a millet grain.
Laypeople do not understand how to locate acupoints accurately and insist on using large moxa cones.
Another method:
When feeling slight discomfort, apply seven moxa cones to Baihui (Baihui, 百会). If it recurs later, apply another seven cones. For cases that are extremely difficult to cure, do not exceed three applications of moxibustion.
Another method:
Stand with feet flat on the ground. Use a specific measurement (text missing, traditionally the middle finger) to measure one circumference around the foot. From this length, fold the distance from Dazhui posteriorly to Baihui anteriorly. Apply twenty-one (3 times 7) moxa cones to the head, with cones the size of a small bean.
Another method:
Apply three moxa cones to each of the two Fengchi (Fengchi, 风池) acupoints.
Another method:
For malaria originating from the hand, apply moxibustion to Sanjian (Sanjian, 三间). [This point is located one cun below the root of the second phalanx at the base of the tiger's mouth.] For chronic malaria lasting three years, apply fire when the patient feels impending distress before an attack.
Another method:
For malaria originating from the head and neck, pre-apply moxibustion to the apex of Dazhui on the neck before the onset. Gradually apply until past the time of onset, then stop.
Another method:
For malaria originating from the waist, apply one hundred moxa cones to Shenshu (Shenshu, 肾俞). [This point is located one and a half cun lateral to the lower border of the fourteenth thoracic vertebra.]
Another method for treating all types of malaria, regardless of duration:
The patient lies supine. Measure the midpoint between the nipples using a specific measurement (text missing, traditionally the middle finger). Bend this measurement downward from the nipple. The number of moxa cones corresponds to the patient's age (Suinian Zhuang, 随年壮). Males are treated on the left side; females on the right.
Another method for treating Five Zang Malaria (Wuzang Nüe, 五脏疟) and all other forms of malaria:
Apply seven moxa cones to Chize (Chize, 尺泽). [This point is located in the center of the elbow crease where the artery pulses.]
Another method for treating alternating chills and fever malaria:
Shangxing (Shangxing, 上星) is the primary point. [Located one cun directly above the hairline at the midline of the nose, in a depression capable of holding a bean.] Apply seven moxa cones.
Another method for malaria that develops in the late afternoon:
Linqi (Jingming or Tongziliao depending on context, here likely referring to a point near the eye, text specifies "Lin Qi", possibly Jingming BL1 or similar, but literally "Approaching Eye") is the primary point. [Located five fen above the hairline in the depression above the eye orbit.] Apply seven moxa cones.
Another method for malaria accompanied by excessive sweating, low back pain preventing bending or twisting, eyes feeling as if they will protrude, and neck pain feeling as if being pulled out:
Kunlun (Kunlun, 昆仑) is the primary point. [Located in the depression behind the lateral malleolus on the calcaneus.] Apply three moxa cones.
Another method for malaria manifesting as excess syndrome with low back and abdominal pain, or deficiency syndrome with epistaxis:
Feiyang (Feiyang, 飞扬) is the primary point. [Located seven cun above the lateral malleolus.] Apply seven moxa cones. (All extracted from Volume Ten of the source text.)
