The *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Proven Prescriptions) treats chronic qi cough, where attacks involve rushing panting, inability to sit or lie down comfortably, and a sound like "ya" in the throat with breath nearly failing.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (remove joints), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) (remove tips, skin, and double-kernel seeds, crush), Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (Ziwan, 紫菀) (each 3 liang), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi, 橘皮) (each 4 liang).
Cut these five herbs, boil in 6 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng, remove dregs, and divide into three doses. If not cured after one dose, frequently administer two or three more doses; historically used, it is very effective. (Zhang Wenzhong agrees, from Volume 4.)

The *Bingyuan* (Source of Diseases) states that the Lung governs Qi and manifests on the skin and hair. When Qi is deficient, slight cold invades the skin and hair, damaging the Lung. Insufficient Qi leads to cough. Qi harmonizes when warm but becomes obstructed and stagnant when cold. Deficiency results in insufficient Qi, which is forced by cold and gathers between the Lungs, unable to diffuse outward, thus causing cough and shortness of breath. (From Volume 14.)
The *Shenshi Fang* (Deep Master's Prescriptions) treats cough and shortness of breath due to internal injury, pain in the intestines, fluid retention with reversal cold, undigested food, cold-heat pathogenic masses, and disharmony of the five Zang organs. Cistanche Soup Formula.
