According to the *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases): When the Lung is invaded by cold pathogenic factors, mild cases result in cough. Chronic cough refers to a condition that persists for years and does not heal over time. Cough can originate from any of the five Zang organs; if it persists, it transmits sequentially to their corresponding Fu organs. Various chronic coughs eventually transmit to the San Jiao (Triple Burner). The presentation includes cough accompanied by abdominal fullness and loss of appetite. This is caused by cold qi accumulating in the Stomach and affecting the Lung, leading to excessive phlegm and saliva, facial edema, and rebellious Qi movement. (From Volume 14)
The *Shen Shi Fang* (Deep Master's Formulas) treats chronic cough of the five Zang organs persisting for years. In severe cases, there is rebellious Qi preventing lying down, and a sensation of a foreign body in the throat, which physicians find difficult to treat. Formula: Wu Yu Wan (Five Healing Pills).
Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Xixin (Asarum), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Baiqian (Cynanchum Root), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, each 3 fen), Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper, perspired), Daizhe (Hematite), Tongcao (Tetrapanax Pith), Kundonghua (Coltsfoot Flower), Yuanhua (Genkwa Flower, fried, each 1 fen), Fulonggan (Long-stove Earth), Ziwan (Aster Root), Muli (Oyster Shell, each 2 fen, fried).
The above thirteen ingredients are crushed, sieved, and mixed with malt sugar until uniform. Form pills the size of a jujube pit. Hold one pill in the mouth, slowly swallowing the juice until exhausted, then replace with another. The treatment is effective when warmth is felt in the chest. If ineffective, adjust dosage according to judgment. For chronic severe cases, take more than twenty pills day and night. A one-year cough may be cured in one month; a ten-year cough in one hundred days. Avoid consuming Seaweed, Chinese Cabbage, raw Green Onion, and raw vegetables.
Another formula for thirty-year cough: Yuanhua Decoction.
Yuanhua (Genkwa Flower, 2 liang), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 3 liang, powdered).
Boil Yuanhua in five sheng of water to obtain three sheng of liquid. Remove dregs, add ginger powder, and boil with one sheng of honey until thick like porridge. Take an amount the size of half a jujube pit, three times daily. Increase if necessary. Another method omits Dried Ginger; extract juice from Genkwa Flower, mix with honey, and form pills. Take three pills the size of a mulberry seed, three times daily.
Another formula for thirty-year cough with Qi rushing upward causing near-death sensation, refractory to medical treatment: Haizao Wan (Seaweed Pills). Formula by Chu Zhongkan.
Haizao (Seaweed, 3 fen), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 5 fen, heart removed), Kunbu (Kelp), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Xixin (Asarum), Wenha (Clam Shell), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper, perspired, each 2 fen).
Crush and sieve the eight ingredients, mix with honey. Take pills the size of an apricot kernel. At bedtime, place one pill on the tongue, swallow the juice slowly, then place another. Avoid raw Green Onion and raw vegetables.
Another formula for thirty-year cough with rebellious Qi, shortness of breath due to long-standing cold, guest-heat in the five Zang organs, vexing pain in the four limbs, aggravation after eating, occasional attacks, inability to walk in severe cases, insomnia, and frequent dreams: Xiangchi Wan (Fermented Soybean Pills).

Use a bamboo tube to inhale the powder through the nose and swallow, ensuring it enters the stomach. Take after meals, three times daily. If not healed after three days, prepare seven more clusters. Roast a piece of meat thoroughly, place the powder on the meat, turning it so the powder penetrates the meat. Lie supine, chew the meat juice to absorb the medicinal power, feeling a stinging sensation in the throat. Swallow the meat after the power dissipates. Previous treatments failed, but eating this meat cures. Repeat if necessary until cured. Sheep, cattle, or deer meat may be used; do not use pork. Avoid raw vegetables.
