The *Guangji Fang* treats long-standing gan-li (intestinal parasitic dysentery) that has not healed, with the Yuanzi Fan Powder Formula.
Yuanzi Fan (8 fen, calcined), Shexiang (2 fen, ground), Wu Baifan (6 fen, calcined), Yunmu (5 fen, powdered), Guixin (2 fen), Longgu (6 fen), Wushizi (7 pieces, calcined), Huanglian (8 fen).
These eight herbs are crushed and sifted to make a powder. Take 3 qianbi mixed with fresh ginger juice on an empty stomach, twice daily; alternatively, take with decocted ginger water.
Another formula treats chronic gan-li with emaciation and sallow complexion.
Shi Liuhuang (ground), Huanglian (each 1 liang), Aiye (1 liang), Fengmi (1 sheng).
Take these four ingredients, add 2 sheng of water, and first decoct Huanglian and Aiye until half a sheng remains. Then add Shi Liuhuang powder, boil for three to five times, strain off the dregs, add Fengmi, and boil again for three to five times. Divide into three doses. (All from Volume 4)
The *Bixiao Fang* treats long-standing dysentery transforming into gan-li, using an enema formula.
Chugen (one handful, washed clean, white bark peeled, crushed, and juiced to obtain 3 he; avoid exposure to wind during extraction), Mazizhi (2 he, heated until resembling axle grease), Cu Ganding (1 he), Jiaozhuyu (4 fen, processed), Chishao (2 he).
Take these five ingredients, add 6 sheng of water, decoct Jiaozhuyu and Chidou, strain to obtain 2 sheng of liquid. Mix this with the three ingredients: Chugen juice, Mazizhi, and Cu Ganding. Divide into two parts. Use one part for enema; after one day, use the remaining part for another enema. The medicine should be warm when used.
Another formula treats dysentery initially presenting with pus and blood, or changing to pure white, or resembling fish brain, lasting over fifty days or even one to two years without healing, transforming into gan-li, with excrement resembling fermented rice water.
This single ingredient is aged vinegar (over one year old is best, preferably from rice or wheat). For sheep liver, remove the membrane, slice like willow leaves, and eat the whole piece on an empty stomach in the morning; the disease will be permanently cured. For the following month, avoid hot noodles, greasy foods, sauces, pork, fish, and chicken.
Another formula treats gan-li that has persisted for a long time, causing severe emaciation, bedridden state, and approaching death.
Xin Chu Yangfen (1 sheng).
Soak this single ingredient in 1 sheng of water overnight. Squeeze out the juice the next morning and take it in one dose. For extremely severe cases, no more than three doses are needed.
Another method for treating gan: for men, women, and children with long-standing dysentery unresponsive to hundreds of treatments, this formula is most effective.
Dingxiang, Shexiang, Huanglian (equal parts).
Crush and sift these three herbs into a powder. Take an amount the size of an apricot kernel, place in a bamboo tube, and insufflate into the lower anus. For children, reduce the dose according to their capacity. No more than three or four applications are needed for cure. Cai Guangzhou stated that this formula is often used with miraculous effect for chronic gan-li unresponsive to other treatments. (Also found in Volume 3, same as *Beiji*)
Another formula treats long-standing dysentery transforming into gan-li, with foul sores growing in the lower region (anus/perineum), accompanied by aversion to cold and high fever.
Taobaipi (sliced, 1 sheng), Huaibaipi (1 sheng), Kushen (sliced, 5 he), Aiyi, Dazao (10 pieces).
Add 5 sheng of water to these five ingredients, decoct to obtain 2.5 sheng, strain off the dregs, and add Xiongdan (size of a jujube pit). Stir until uniform. Use 2 sheng for enema into the lower region, and take the remainder orally in divided doses.
Recently added formula for long-standing dysentery and gan-li where previous formulas failed. This formula is certain to be effective.
Jianxuan Chugenbaipi (quantity unrestricted; avoid exposure to dogs and wind during collection).
Finely chop this single ingredient and crush into a paste. Use fine flour to shape dumplings like small dates, ensuring they do not break. Boil thoroughly and swallow seven pieces. For severe cases, no more than seven or eight doses are needed. Take on an empty stomach.
Another formula treats gan-li occurring incessantly day and night.
Obtain thick Chugen juice (approx. volume of one eggshell).
Mix this single ingredient with millet wash water (volume of one eggshell) and administer as an enema. It heals after two applications; the efficacy is miraculous. Reduce the dose by half for infants. (Recorded by physician Chu Qiu)
