The etiology of chronic bloody and purulent dysentery lies in cold and heat pathogens invading the blood, causing blood to seep into the intestines, mixing with body fluids and discharging downwards. In severe cases, intestinal deficiency fails to recover, resulting in continuous discharge of red and white matter without relief.
(Cited from) Cui Shi's Malinzi San (Campion Seed Powder), treating bloody and purulent dysentery, abdominal pain, and long-standing watery and grain dysentery with color white like rice wash sediment; it is indicated for all these conditions. For extremely severe cases, recovery is expected within three to four days.
Malan Zi (Campion Seed, *Iris lactea* var. *chinensis*) (1 sheng, stir-fried) Diyugenpi (Bark of *Sanguisorba officinalis* root, 8 fen) Houpo (Processed *Magnolia officinalis* bark, 8 fen) Shuai (Prepared *Artemisia argyi* leaf, 8 fen) Chishizhi (Red Kaolin, 1 sheng) Longgu (Fossilized mammal bones, 10 fen) Fuling (Poria, 10 fen) Danggui (Angelica sinensis root, 10 fen)
Crush and sieve the above eight herbs into a powder. Take one fangcun bi (a measure equivalent to a square inch spoonful) per dose, increasing to four or five bi. Administer twice daily and once at night, taken with plain water. (From Volume III)
Wen Zhong's prescription for bloody and purulent dysentery lasting five or six years.
Shao Dajing (Burned *Elaeagnus angustifolia* branches).
Take the juice from this single herb and drink 5-6 he. Recovery will be immediate. (Same as *Zhouhou Fang*)
Another prescription for sudden abdominal pain with bloody and purulent stools persisting for several days.
Jizi (Chicken egg, 1 unit: crack the head, remove yolk, discard white) Humei (Pepper powder, fill the empty shell and burn until charred and solidified).
Administer the above two ingredients with wine. (Same as *Zhouhou Fang*, both from Volume III)
Recently effective prescription for bloody and purulent dysentery with dozens of bowel movements per day, suitable for all ages.
Gancao (Licorice root, 2 liang, processed by frying).
Slice the single herb, boil in 4 sheng of Jiangshui (fermented grain water) until reduced to 1 sheng. Remove dregs and take in one dose.
Bixiao prescription for cold Gan-type dysentery.
Take Liangdang Zi (Datura seed, stir-fry until yellow).
Grind the single herb into powder, mix with pig lard from the twelfth lunar month, pound thoroughly to form pills wrapped in silk, sized like a jujube. Insert into the lower orifice (anus). As the pill is expelled due to dysentery, immediately insert a new one. Cure is expected within no more than three applications. (From Volume II)
Gujin Luyan prescription for Five Gans steaming downward dysentery.
Kushen (Sophora flavescens root, 3 liang) Qingxiang (Seed of *Celosia argentea*) Gancao (Licorice root, processed by frying, each 3 liang).
Slice the above three herbs, boil in 4 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Divide into three enemas/doses for cure. For steaming symptoms alone, consuming fresh Shengdihuang juice (Rehmannia glutinosa root juice) leads to recovery.
Another formula
Qingdai (Indigo naturalis) Dingxiang (Clove) Huanglian (Coptis chinensis rhizome) (equal parts).
Grind and sieve the above three herbs. Mix with rice wash sediment to form pills. Hold in mouth if there are sores in the oral cavity. If there are sores in the lower orifice, wrap in silk and insert into the lower orifice. Take 50-60 pills daily, holding them to allow downward action for cure.
Another formula
Dingxiang (Clove) Shexiang (Musk, separately ground) Shidai (Mineral indigo) Shiyan (Rock salt) Shanyuren (Kernel of *Prunus humilis*) Xiaobapi (Bark of *Platycladus orientalis*) Guixin (Cinnamon twig) Ganjiang (Dried ginger) Qingfanshi (Green Alum stone, calcined) Toufa hui (Ash of human hair).
Grind the above ten herbs into powder. Apply to sores. If dry, mix with pig lard from the twelfth lunar month and apply warmly. This treats post-epidemic conditions where consumption of mutton, fatty/greasy foods, alcohol, or sexual activity leads to prolonged steaming transforming into Gan disease. It is necessary to attack the lower orifice; do not neglect this.
Another prescription for Gan damp dysentery.
Qingxiang (Seed of *Celosia argentea*) Xionghuang (Realgar, finely ground) Shiliuhuang (Elemental sulfur, finely ground) Wuyi (Chrysanthemum indicum fruit) Leiwan (Polyporus umbellatus fungus, each 2 liang) Kushen (Sophora flavescens root) Yelangya (Root of *Acanthopanax sessiliflorus*, each 3 liang) Lilu (Veratrum nigrum rhizome, 1 liang, processed).
Grind and sieve the above eight herbs into powder. Form pellets the size of an apricot kernel and insert into the lower orifice.
Another miraculous prescription for Gan damp dysentery.
Huanglian (Coptis chinensis rhizome, 3 liang) Linglingxiang (Lingling fragrant herb, 1.5 liang) Xijiao (Rhinoceros horn, shaved, 1 fen) Dingxiang (Clove, 30 units) Shexiang (Musk, size of a large soybean) Niuhuang (Calculus bovis, size of a large soybean).
Wash Huanglian, Linglingxiang, and Dingxiang with water. Clarify and remove dregs. Add water to fill 9 sheng. Boil Huanglian, Linglingxiang, Dingxiang, and Xijiao for two boils. Then add Niuhuang and Shexiang and boil for one more boil. Obtain 1 sheng of liquid. Divide into three doses. If not finished in one day, finish on the second day. (Also *Shenshi Fang*: boil 1 sheng of the 9 sheng first, then top up to 9 sheng, reduce to 1 sheng, divide into three doses. Both from Volume X)
