Etiology: Low back pain is caused by damage to the Kidney Qi (Kidney Energy). When the Kidneys are deficient, they are susceptible to Wind pathogenic factors. The Wind stagnates in the Kidney meridians and clashes with the Blood and Qi. If this persists for a long time without dispersing, it results in chronic low back pain. (From Volume 5)
*Short Treatise* Formula for treating low back pain and persistent pain of many years:
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), 10 parts; Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), 5 parts; Gan Qi (Dried Lacquer), 5 parts; Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart), 8 parts; Gan Cao (Licorice Root), 5 parts (roasted).
Grind the above five herbs into powder. Take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) with wine, three times daily. Avoid peaches, plums, sparrow meat, raw green onions, kelp, Chinese cabbage, and Xiang Yi (Terminalia chebula fruit). (Fan Wang agrees.)
*Bi Xiao* Formula for treating chronic low back pain:
Take a staff. Have the patient stand upright with the staff supporting their waist. Align the top of the staff with the center of the umbilicus and mark it. Flip the staff to the back, align the mark with the spine, and measure the distance from this point to the mouth corners (used here as a proportional reference for body measurement). Bisect this distance. Apply moxibustion at both ends of the bisected segment. The number of moxa cones (zhuang) should correspond to the patient's age, which is considered effective.
*Guang Ji* Formula for treating cold below the umbilicus, radiating to the lower back and hips, exacerbated by consuming cold foods:
Niu Xi (Achyranthes Bidentata Root), 8 parts; Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), 8 parts; Huang [likely Huang Qi] (Astragalus Membranaceus Root), 8 parts; Shao Yao (Peony Root), 8 parts; Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), 6 parts (roasted); Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), 8 parts; Fu Ling (Poria), 6 parts; Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), 6 parts; Ju Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), 8 parts; He Li Le Pi (Terminalia Chebula Peel), 8 parts (processed); Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart), 6 parts.
Grind and sieve the above eleven herbs. Mix with honey to form pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take 20 pills on an empty stomach with wine, increasing up to 40 pills, twice daily. Avoid peaches, plums, sparrow meat, raw green onions, and vinegar products.
Another formula for treating cold qi in the abdomen, indigestion, and cold pain in the lower back and hips:
Bing Lang Ren (Areca Seed), 8 parts; Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), 6 parts; Niu Xi (Achyranthes Bidentata Root), 8 parts; Shao Yao (Peony Root), 6 parts; Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange), 8 parts (roasted); Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), 6 parts; Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), 8 parts; Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart), 6 parts; Xiong Duan (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), 6 parts; Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit), 6 parts; Ju Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), 6 parts.
Grind and sieve the above eleven herbs. Mix with honey to form pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take 20 to 30 pills with wine. If drinking wine causes heat to rush to the head and face, take them with ginger and jujube decoction, or plain water is also acceptable. Avoid peaches, plums, sparrow meat, and raw green onions.
