[Etiology] Leprosy (Lai Bing) is caused by exposure to malignant wind and violating taboos. Initially, there are changes in the skin and hair, or a sensation of itching as if insects are crawling on the skin, or visual disturbances where objects appear like hanging threads. Speech may be erratic, and the mind is often filled with fear and panic. Within the skin and flesh, urticaria-like rashes resembling peaches or plums may appear, colored red or black. The hands and feet become stubbornly numb, insensitive to needle pricking, and the soles of the feet...
[Formula 1] Ji Yan Formula: Pill for Black and White Leprosy (Wu Lai Bai Lai Wan).
Ingredients: Pi (roasted), Kui Ge (Tridacna gigas), Fu She Tou (Head of Agkistrodon, roasted), Mu Meng (Four larvae of Tabanus, wings and legs removed, dried), Meng Chong (Leech fly larvae, wings and legs removed, dried), Qi Lao (Grub, one each, roasted), Ling Li Jia (Shell of Emydura chinensis, head and legs removed, roasted), Ge Shang Ting Zhang (Seven larvae of Ocyptera, roasted), Ban Mao (Seven blister beetles, wings and legs removed, roasted), Wu Gong (Centipede, head and legs removed, roasted), Fu Zi (Three Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, peeled), Zhi Zhu (Five spiders, roasted), Shui Zhi (One leech), Lei Wan (Thirty pills of Polyporus), Ba Dou (Fifteen seeds of Crotonis Tiglium, peeled, heart removed, dried), Shui Yin (Mercurius, ground), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhen Dan (Cinnabaris), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex), She Wang (Aconitum alkaloid extract), each one liang; Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), one fen; Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, ground, two liang); Shu Jiao (Sichuan peppercorn, three fen); Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, one fen, ground); Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi, three fen); Gan Sui (Kansui Radix, dried); Shi (burnt); Hua Shi (Talcum, one fen each).
The above twenty-eight ingredients are pounded and sifted. Mix with honey to form pills the size of broad beans. Take two pills per dose, three times daily. Gradually increase the dosage until therapeutic effect is achieved. Avoid pork, cold water, and raw scallions. The dosages in this formula vary significantly due to transcription errors in ancient texts; adjust according to clinical judgment when used. (Another version contains seven insect species but lacks Mu Meng, Ban Mao, Wu Gong, and Fu She, replacing Fu She with Ran She; Fan Wang's version is identical, found in Volume 8.)
[Etiology] In cases of leprosy, the voice becomes hoarse and broken, vision is unclear, limbs are stubbornly numb, joints feel burning hot (or extremely hot), the chest feels stiflingly warm, hands and feet are weak and flaccid, the back and spine are tight and rigid, muscles feel as if hacked apart, urticaria-like rashes appear on the body and limbs, white patches often appear within the flesh, nasal polyps develop, white nodules grow over the pupils causing blindness. This condition is named White Leprosy (Bai Lai). (Found in Volume 2.)
[Formula 2] Ji Yan Formula: Wine for Treating White Leprosy.
Ingredients: Ku Shen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, two jin), Lu Feng Fang (Vespa Crabro Nest, five liang, roasted).
Chop the above two ingredients. Soak them in three dou of water with two jin of Fa Qu (fermentation starter). After three nights, strain out the dregs. Steam two dou of broomcorn millet. Brew wine according to standard methods. When the wine is ready, press and extract the liquid. Drink one cup before meals, along with one chicken egg, three times daily. Gradually increase the amount until recovery. (Also said to treat Wind Paralysis and malignant sores; same as Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang, found in Volume 8.)
[Formula 3] Fan Wang Formula: For White Dandruff on the Body, Itching, or Named White Leprosy.
Ingredients: Ku Shen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, five sheng), Lu Feng Fang (Vespa Crabro Nest, five liang, roasted), Pi (One piece, roasted and chopped), Qu (Fermentation starter, three sheng).
Chop the above four ingredients. Soak them in three dou and five sheng of water for four nights. Strain out the dregs. Steam two dou of rice. Brew wine according to standard methods. After the wine is ready, drink three to five he after meals. Gradually increase the dosage until therapeutic effect is achieved.
[Formula 4] Qian Jin Formula: For White Leprosy with Severe Wind, Loss of Eyebrows and Beard, Red and White Leprosy, Eight Winds and Twelve Bi Syndromes, Tendon Stiffness and Limb Weakness, Fei Shi Dun Zhu (Wandering Pathogen), Edema, Carbuncles and Ulcers, Scabies, Tinea, Malignant Sores, Foot Spasm and Hand Fracture, Hematuria from Eye Area, Phlegm-Fluid Retention, and Cold Accumulation.
Ingredients: Shang Lu Gen (Phytolaccae Radix, twenty-five jin, sliced thinly like horse ears), Qu (Fermentation starter, twenty-five jin).
Soak the above two ingredients in one hu of water. Steam one shi of broomcorn millet. Brew using household wine-making methods, ensuring the qu powder submerges the herbs. After three fermentation cycles, seal for seven days. Open to check if the qu floats and the wine is ripe. Clarify and take warm. Consume up to three dou; for milder cases, consume two dou. Vomiting or diarrhea after taking the medicine is desirable. Diet should include congee and soups made from beef, mutton, deer meat. Avoid raw, cold, sour, slippery foods, pork, fish, chicken, and dog meat. (Found in Volume 24.)
[Formula 5] Wen Zhong Formula: For White Leprosy.
Boil dry Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) strongly. Use this decoction to soak Qu (fermentation starter) to make wine according to standard methods. Drink until slightly intoxicated. (Yao Shi and Fan Wang's versions are identical.)
[Another Formula]
Take one large dried Fu She (Agkistrodon), keeping the head and tail intact without any loss. Soak it in wine: one dou for a large snake, five sheng for a small one. Heat gently with chaff fire until the wine is absorbed. Gradually take about one cun of the snake meat. Mix with pig fat rendered in the twelfth lunar month and apply to the sores. Avoid wheat and hot fermentation starters. (Same as Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang and Fan Wang's version, found in Volume 5.)
