The *Wai Tai Mi Yao* records nine prescriptions for treating Leprosy (Lai Bing).
According to the etiology of the disease, all cases of Leprosy are caused by Evil Wind (pathogenic wind) and by violating taboos or suffering harm. Initially, one may feel numbness in the skin, or experience intense itching as if insects were crawling under the skin; one might see objects in front of the eyes resembling hanging silk threads; or urticaria (wind wheals) may appear with red-black discoloration. These are signs that the disease is just beginning, and immediate treatment is required. During this period, one should abstain from rice, grains, and meats, and exclusively consume sesame seeds, pine mast, and similar items, which is considered the best approach. Generally, diseases arise from Wind pathogens. If treated mildly at the onset, they will not cause harm. However, if the pathogen enters the interior of the skin without the patient's awareness, or circulates through the four limbs and hides within the meridians, it may cause alternating chills and fever in the five zang organs, affecting the Spleen and Kidney. It obstructs the hair follicles and interstices (mao li), making them difficult to unblock. Consequently, Qi, Blood, and Essence become disordered. If left untreated for a long time, it leads to stubborn Bi syndrome (obstruction syndrome), where sweat cannot be excreted, causing soreness and pain in the hands and feet, and insensitivity to acupuncture.
The condition may manifest on the face and eyes with a tingling sensation, or on the chest and neck, feeling like insects crawling. The whole body may itch, leading to sores upon scratching. Swelling and pain may extend to the bone marrow. Hard patches may form the size of a coin, resembling oyster-shell lesions, or shaped like comb teeth or a hand. Puncture with an awl causes no pain. The skin color may turn green, yellow, red, or black, resembling rotting wood. Pain may have no fixed location and migrate irregularly. Lumps may resemble sour jujubes, hanging bells, or feel constricted as if bound by ropes, making bending and stretching difficult. Hands and feet may be immobile. Eyes may swell and weep, with sores inside and out. Urine may be dark yellow with dribbling after voiding. The complexion may lack luster, accompanied by mental confusion and forgetfulness. The variations are numerous: if toxic worms devour the Liver, eyebrows and eyelashes fall out; if they devour the Lung, the nasal bridge collapses. Some patients make sounds, run as if riding the wind, and develop yellow fluid on the head and face. Once these conditions arise, they accumulate due to Cold and Heat imbalances. First, administer... One type, Wood Leprosy, initially presents with falling eyebrows and eyelashes, itchy face and eyes, resembling new sores. After three years, it becomes a major affliction; urgent treatment can cure it, while neglect leads to chronic disease. Fire Leprosy... [Text fragment]... The *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* states that all Leprosy arises from Evil Wind and violation of taboos. Initially, the skin feels numb, with intense itching like insects crawling, or seeing objects... **Ku Shen Decoction**: Ku Shen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis) 5 jin, sliced. Soak the single herb in 3 dou of fine wine for 4-5 days. Drink slowly, 2-3 he per dose. (This prescription also treats White Leprosy in the *Bei Ji Fang*).
**Another Prescription**: Ku Shen Gen Pi (Cortex Sophorae Radicis) 3 jin. Coarsely crush the single herb, soak in 3 dou of wine for 21 days. Strain the dregs. Take 1 he per dose, three times daily. If it is Leprosy, one will feel numbness. Avoid miscellaneous foods.
**Fan Wang’s Prescription for Leprosy**: Take Ma Xin Hao (Artemisia capillaris var. or related species, also known as Ma Shi Hao or Lan Shi Cao). Crush into powder. Take 1 fang cun bi per dose, three times daily. After 100 days, if redness recurs, complete recovery occurs within one year. (Same as *Zhou Hou Fang*).
**Another Prescription**: Moxibustion on the middle line of both thumbs, and at the Tiger’s Mouth (Hegu area) of hands and feet. Use the number of moxa cones corresponding to the patient’s age (Sui Nian Zhuang).
**Shen Shi’s Prescription for Fatal Leprosy with Sores on Body and Face**: Take 10 bundles of Bai Ai Hao (White Mugwort), each bundle as large as a sheng. Boil to extract juice. Use this juice to ferment 7 dou of rice, following standard brewing methods. Once the wine is ready, drink it slowly.
**Another Prescription**: Shui Yin (Mercurius, prepared), Ru Li Lu (Radix Veratri), Zhen Zhu (Margarita), Dan Sha (Cinnabaris), Xiong Huang (Realgar). Each of the six herbs weighs 1 jin. Grind all into powder. Soak the herbs in 3.5 shi of aged vinegar (three-year-old) in a jar until the potency dissipates. After seven days, bathe in the solution in a clean, warm, sealed room. Start soaking from the feet up to the waist. Bathe once daily. Wipe the face with cotton cloth, then wash the eyes with water, ensuring no solution enters the eyes. Continue for seven days. Keep the solution warm. This is highly effective. Avoid eating cat meat and raw blood products. (Same as Fan Wang’s prescription).
**Another Prescription for Generalized Leprosy Sores**: Lian He (Lotus Seed Pods) 20 pieces, Duan Shi (Calcined Alumen) 1 dou. Leach the juice, combine and boil until very thick. Soak the sores for about half a day. Repeat several times.
**Another Prescription**: Take 1 cheng of fresh green floating duckweed (Ping Cai). Boil strongly and use for bathing/soaking for half a day. Many recover using this method. (All from Volume 9).
**Ji Yan’s Prescription for Leprosy**: Take [Herb Name Missing] 1 dan. Boil in 2 shi of water to obtain 1 shi of liquid. Soak and wash the sores. Recovery occurs within 3-5 treatments.
