Etiology: The so-called "Nine Parasites" are as follows: the first is called Fuchong (Fushi Worm, a type of intestinal parasite), four cun in length; the second is called Huichong (Ascaris lumbricoides, roundworm), one chi in length; the third is called Baichong (White Worm, likely tapeworm segments or threadworms), one cun in length; the fourth is called Rouchong (Meat Worm), resembling rotten apricots; the fifth is called Feichong (Lung Worm), resembling silkworms; the sixth is called Weichong (Stomach Worm), resembling toads; the seventh is called Ruochong (Weak Worm), resembling melon seeds; the eighth is called Chichong (Red Worm), resembling raw meat; the ninth is called Taochong (Pinworm/Oxyuris vermicularis), extremely minute, resembling vegetable worms. Fuchong is the leader of the group of worms. If Huichong penetrates the heart, it causes death. Baichong reproduces itself... [Text here contains lacunae or corruption] ... Guanzhong Wan (Hosiea Pill) from the *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Experiences Formulas) treats various diseases caused by the activity of the Nine Parasites.
Guanzhong (Osmorhiza longiloba, processed by stir-frying) Shican (Stone Silkworm, processed by stir-frying, 5 fen) Yelangya (Wild Wolf's Tooth, 4 fen) Lu (Reed Rhizome, 2 fen) Shuqi (Perilla Leaf, processed by stir-frying, 6 fen) Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, processed by stir-frying, 3 fen)
Leiwan (Polyporus Umbellatus, 6 fen) Wuyi (Chaulmoogra Seed, 4 fen) Nongpo (Magnolia Bark, 3 fen) Binglang (Areca Nut, 6 fen)
The above ten herbs are crushed and sifted, formed into pills with honey. Take thirty pills on an empty stomach with warm Jiangshui (fermented grain water). Administer three times daily. If ineffective, gradually increase the dose. For diseases caused by Baichong, administer with Feizi Tang (Torreya Decoction). (This formula appears in *Beiji Wen Zhong Jin Gu Lu Yan*, and is also found in Volume 9 of Fan Wang's works.)
Shanfan Therapy treats Pi Lao (Spleen Exhaustion) where a one-cun-long Baichong resides in the Spleen, causing frequent vomiting and a feeling of inner terror (another version reads "Xuanxuan"), with a sensation of nausea but inability to vomit. Qianhu Tang (Peucedanum Decoction) Formula:
Qianhu (Peucedanum Root, 3 liang) Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 3 liang) Chi Fuling (Poria Cocos with Red Coir, 3 liang) Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, processed by stir-frying, 2 liang) Xixin (Asarum Root, 3 liang) Xuanfuhua (Inula Flower, 1 liang) Changshan (Dichroa Root, 3 liang) Songluo (Tree Moss, 2 liang) Longdan (Gentian Root, 3 liang) Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf, sliced, 1 sheng) Xingren (Apricot Seed, 3 liang, remove tip and skin)
The above eleven herbs are chopped. Boil in one dou of water until reduced to three sheng. Strain the dregs and divide into three doses. If there is heat and fullness in the abdomen, add Mangxiao (Mirabilite, 3 liang), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 3 liang), and Kushen (Sophora Root, 2 liang), then add two sheng of water and decoct according to the prescription. Observe usual dietary restrictions.
Another method treats Pi Lao Re (Heat from Spleen Exhaustion) where Baichong resides in the Spleen, causing frequent vomiting. Zhuyu Gen Xia Chong Tang (Cornus Root Downward-Expelling Worm Decoction) Formula:
Zhuyu Dongyin Gen (Cornus Officinalis Root, eastern-growing branch, large ones one chi long, sliced) Dama Zi (Cannabis Seed, 8 sheng) Jupi (Tangerine Peel, 2 liang, sliced)
The above three herbs are chopped. Pound the Hemp Seeds until mushy, mix together, and decoct for administration. Yellow fluid may be discharged after taking the medicine. When preparing the medicine, silence must be maintained; do not speak about making the medicine, as the worms will hear it and refuse to exit. This must be strictly observed. It is very effective. Decoct with water and adjust the dosage temporarily to achieve efficacy.
Another method treats Fei Lao Re Sun (Heat Damage from Lung Exhaustion) where Feichong (Lung Worm), resembling a silkworm, resides in the Lungs, causing cough, counterflow qi, and asthma. Alternatively, this is attributed to sorrow and anger causing Qi obstruction and alternating chills and fever, all arising from exhaustion. The disease is named Gaohuang (Gaohuang Syndrome, a critical condition beyond the reach of acupuncture and moxibustion). Maimendong Wu Ge Xia Qi Wan (Ophiopogon Five-Segmented Descending Qi Pill) Formula:
Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 10 liang, remove heart) Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper, 4 fen, sweat out the oil) Yuanzhi (Polygala Root) Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, each 6 fen) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 5 fen) Gancao (Licorice Root, processed by stir-frying, 10 fen) Renshen (Ginseng Root, 7 fen) Xixin (Asarum Root, 6 fen) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 5 fen) Baibu (Stemona Root) Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) Huang (Astragalus Root, each 5 fen) Xingren (Apricot Seed, 40 pieces) Binglang (Areca Nut, 5 fen)
The above fourteen herbs are crushed and sifted, formed into pills the size of quail eggs with honey. Hold one pill in the mouth and slowly swallow the juice. Observe usual dietary restrictions.
*Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats Shen Re (Kidney Heat) with swelling and tightness of the four limbs, where Taochong (Pinworm) resembles garden worms and resides in the Kidneys. Formula:
Guanzhong (Osmorhiza longiloba, three large ones, processed by stir-frying) Ganqi (Dried Resin of Toxicodendron vernicifluum, 2 liang, processed by stir-frying) Zhuyu (Cornus Fruit, 6 fen, or said to be 50 pieces) Xingren (Apricot Seed, 40 pieces) Wuyi (Chaulmoogra Seed) Hufen (Lead White Powder) Huaibaipi (Phellodendron Bark, each 4 fen)
The above seven herbs are crushed into powder. In the early morning, take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) with Jinghua Shui (well water drawn at dawn). Increase the dose gradually until the disease is cured.
Another method treats Fei Lao Re (Heat from Lung Exhaustion) where parasites reside in the Lungs causing disease. Formula:
Dongxing Sanggen Baipi (White Bark of Mulberry Root growing eastward, sliced, 1 sheng) Dongxing Zhuyu Gen (Cornus Root growing eastward, sliced, 5 liang) Yelangya (Wild Wolf's Tooth, 3 liang)
The above three herbs are chopped. Decoct in seven sheng of wine until reduced to one and a half sheng. Consume entirely in the early morning.
Another method treats Gan Lao (Liver Exhaustion) where Zhangchong (Liver Worm) resides in the Liver, causing fear, anxiety, and red eyes. Formula:
Jizi (Chicken Egg, five pieces, remove yolks) Dongxing Zhuyu Gen (Cornus Root growing eastward, sliced, 3 sheng) La (Beeswax, 3 liang) Ganqi (Dried Resin of Toxicodendron vernicifluum, 4 liang, processed by stir-frying) Jingsimi (Glutinous Rice Flour, half sheng)
The above five herbs: pound the Cornus Root and Resin into powder, mix with the medicine, beat the chicken eggs in a copper vessel to combine, refine over fire until it can be formed into pills the size of small beans. Do not eat the previous night. In the morning, take 120 pills with drink/water for adults, and 50 pills for children. The worms will rot and be expelled, curing the disease.
Another method treats Xin Lao Re Shang Xin (Heat from Heart Exhausture Damaging the Heart) where a long worm named Huichong (Ascaris lumbricoides), one chi long, penetrates the heart causing disease. Formula:
Leiwan (Polyporus Umbellatus, processed by stir-frying) Jupi (Tangerine Peel) Taoren (Peach Seed, each 5 fen) Yelangya (Wild Wolf's Tooth, 6 fen) Guanzhong (Osmorhiza longiloba, three pieces) Wuyi (Chaulmoogra Seed) Qingxiangzi (Celosia Seed) Ganqi (Dried Resin of Toxicodendron vernicifluum, processed by stir-frying, each 4 fen) Luankou (Human Hair Tangle, burned like a chicken egg) Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, twenty pieces, processed by stir-frying)
The above ten herbs are crushed and sifted, formed into pills with honey. Take fourteen pills on an empty stomach with water and wine. Administer twice daily. (All formulas above are from Volume 18.)
