Six Formulas from Shen Shi for Treating Five Types of Hemorrhoids That Have Not Healed for Years:
Huai Zi Wan (Sophora Seed Pill) is indicated for dry-damp hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are categorized as male or female types, presenting with acute and severe suffering. Symptoms include dryness, swelling, and pain; profuse bleeding without cessation; lesions resembling mouse teats attached to nodules; and internal intestinal restlessness and itching. The condition may persist for three to five years and can be fatal. Patients must avoid alcohol consumption and excessive physical labor or sexual activity, as violating these restrictions will trigger a recurrence.
Ingredients: Huai Zi (Fructus Sophorae), Gan Xi (Dried Resin of Toxicodendron Vernicifluum, processed), KT Mu Gen Pi (Bark of KT Root, each 4 liang; note: KT Zi refers to Corni Fructus); Qin Jiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae); Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae); Bai Lian (Rhizoma Ampelopsisis); Qing Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae); Mu Li (Concha Ostreae, processed); Long Gu (Os Draconis); Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, selected for eight-cornered shape); Lei Wan (Fungus Polyporus); Ji Li (Fructus Tribuli); Bai Zhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae).
The above sixteen ingredients are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills. Take 20 pills per dose, three times daily. (Identical to the formula in *Qianjin Yi Fang*; *Qianjin Yi Fang* includes Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos) and Zhu Yu Gen Pi (Bark of Corni Radicis), but excludes Ji She Xiang (Styrax) and KT Mu Gen Pi.)
Xiao Huai Shi Wan (Small Sophora Fruit Pill) from *Qian Jin Fang* is indicated for five types of hemorrhoids that have not healed for ten years.
Ingredients: Huai Zi (Sophorae Fructus, 3 jin); Long Gu (Os Draconis, 10 liang); Fan Shi (Alumen, calcined); Liu Huang (Sulfur, 1 jin); Bai Tang (White Sugar, 2 jin); Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 10 liang); Gan Xi (Toxicodendri Resina, 10 liang, processed).
The above seven ingredients are prepared by crushing and sifting the two mineral substances and the sugar. The remaining herbs are finely cut and placed in a copper vessel. One shi of rice is added, and the mixture is steamed. The juice is extracted using cotton cloth and used to bind the powdered herbs into pills, rolled by hand to the size of sophora seeds. Dried in the shade, take 20 pills per dose, three times daily. (Identical to *Shen Shi Fang*.)
Another formula, Huai Jiu (Sophora Wine), is indicated for five types of hemorrhoids that have not healed for fifty years.
Ingredients: Huai Dong Nan Zhi (Southeastern branches of Sophora tree, finely cut, 1 shi); Huai Dong Nan Gen (Southeastern roots of Sophora tree, finely cut, 2 shi); Huai Bai Pi (White bark of Sophora tree, cut, 1 shi); Huai Zi (Sophorae Fructus, 1 shi).
The above four ingredients are boiled in a large cauldron with 16 shi of water until reduced to 5 shi. The liquid is clarified and used to soak the ingredients, then boiled again to yield 1 shi 6 dou of decoction. Two shi of millet are cooked, and 2 dou of yeast starter are added to ferment the wine. Stir well, seal with mud, and let stand for seven days. Once fermented, strain and drink the clear liquor. Consume 3-4 times daily, adjusting for temperature and tolerance, aiming for mild intoxication. When preparing, boil the dregs again to extract juice for washing rice and cleaning vessels. Do not use raw water, as this medicine prohibits contact with raw water. (Identical to *Shen Shi Fang* and *Qianjin Yi Fang*.)
Another method:
Apply Xiong Dan (Ursi Bile) until healing is complete. Apply whenever symptoms flare up. All other formulas are inferior to this one. (From *Jiu Ji Fang* and *Qianjin Yi Fang*, both appearing in Volume 24.)
*Gu Jin Lu Yan* treats hemorrhoids persisting for thirty years, characterized by prolapse of the anus and bleeding resembling chicken liver (Chang Zhi / Intestinal Hemorrhoid); acne-like protrusions extending across the anal verge (Mu Zhi / Male Hemorrhoid); and nipple-like growths at the anal margin (Pin Zhi / Female Hemorrhoid). These are caused by overeating, fatigue, and qi stagnation.
Ingredients: Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, golden-colored, 10 liang); Hua Shi (Talcum, 7 liang, ground); Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 3 liang); Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex, 2 liang); Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 30 pieces); Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 5 liang); Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen, 2 liang, ground).
The above seven ingredients are chopped and boiled in 1 dou 2 sheng of wine until reduced to 2 sheng. Take the entire dose at once; expect purgation.
Another formula for treating hemorrhoids persisting for ten years, presenting like mouse teats with pus discharge followed by severe bloody stools. Bai Lian San (Ampelopsis Powder):
Ingredients: Chi Xiao Dou (Vigna Semen Rubrum, 4 fen); Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 3 fen); Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 2 fen); Bai Lian (Ampelopsisis Rhizoma, 2 fen); Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 fen); Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 3 fen); Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata); Mu Li (Ostreae Concha, each 2 fen, processed).
The above eight ingredients are crushed and sifted into a powder. Administer 1 fang cun bi (one square-inch spoonful) with wine or rice wash water, three times daily. (Both formulas appear in Volume 30.)
