According to the *Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases), regarding *Xiuxi Li* (Resting Dysentery): There is retained fluid in the epigastrium. Due to prolonged dysentery, it may be invaded by cold qi or attacked by hot qi. When qi moves the retained fluid, the fluid becomes turbulent, leading to intestinal deficiency.
The *Zhou Hou Fang* (Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies) formula for treating *Xiuxi Li* (Resting Dysentery).
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, sliced); Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae, one piece the size of a duck egg); Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, one palm-sized piece, roasted); Shuai Ai (Mugwort Leaf, cooked, one handful).
Take the above four herbs. Add five sheng of water, boil the first three herbs, reduce to two sheng, remove dregs, then add Ejiao. Once Ejiao is dissolved, divide into two doses for administration. Boiling dried Mugwort Leaf (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) into a strong decoction is also good. Alternatively, boiling Honeysuckle Stem and Berry (Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis et Flos) rice as a beverage is effective.
Another formula:
Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix, dry, one jin); Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, one liang, processed).
Soak the above two herbs in one dou of wine for five nights. Drink one sheng per dose, three times daily. Finish and prepare again if necessary.
Another formula:
Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae, four liang).
Pulverize the single herb to the size of small beans. Add five sheng of water, boil to obtain two and a half sheng. Cool it down and divide into five doses. Alternatively, mix with rice water to form pills; take ten pills per dose. (Wen Zhong's formula is identical, both from Volume II).
Wen Zhong and Ge Shi's formula: If chronic diarrhea persists without healing for a long time, this is named *Xiuxia* (Resting Diarrhea). The treatment formula is as follows.
Da Gu (Large Bone, one piece).
Roast the single herb until yellow and charred, pulverize and sieve. Administer one fang cun bi with warm water, three times daily until cured. (Identical to *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*).
Hu Qia's Qu Bai Wan (Curcuma and Malt Pill), treating decades-long *Xiuxi Li* (Resting Dysentery) with inability to eat, promoting digestion and descending qi, treating emaciation due to deficiency.
Maibo (Malt and Coptis, fried); Qu (Medicated Leaven, fried, each one sheng); Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed); Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex); Wumei Rou (Mume Fructus Flesh, each two liang); Renshen (Ginseng Radix); Fuling (Poria).
Pulverize the above seven herbs, mix with honey to form pills the size of white mustard seeds. Take ten pills before meals with warm water, three times daily, gradually increasing the dosage. (Identical to *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*, both from Volume III).
Guang Ji's formula for treating dysentery with pus and water caused by imbalance of cold and heat.

Pulverize the above nine herbs, mix with honey to form pills. Take fifteen pills (size of soybeans) on an empty stomach with water, twice daily, gradually increasing the dosage. (From Volume III).
