Chapter: Twenty-Five Formulas for Recurrence of Cold Damage due to Labor and Diet
Category: Formulas
[Translation]
The root of the disease lies in the fact that after the recent recovery from Cold Damage (Shanghan), body fluids have not yet recovered, and Qi and Blood remain deficient. If labor or activity is undertaken too early, the illness will recur; hence it is called "recurrence" (Fu). Excessive speech and overthinking consume Shen (Spirit/Mental Energy); combing hair and bathing consume physical strength. Labor generates internal heat, which, taking advantage of the deficiency, re-enters the meridians, causing the disease to recur. If the pulse is deep and tight, purgation is indicated.
There is also "dietary recurrence." After the recent recovery from Cold Damage, or following a severe illness, the Spleen and Stomach are still weak, and Gu Qi (the essence derived from food and drink) has not yet recovered. If one consumes pork, offal, fatty fish, or greasy foods, severe diarrhea will inevitably occur, which is difficult for physicians to treat, often leading to death. If one consumes cakes, sticky millet, malt sugar, dried meat, roasted meat, raw fish slices, dates, chestnuts, and other hard-to-digest foods, the weak Stomach Qi cannot digest them, inevitably leading to accumulated heat. If purgatives are then used, Stomach Qi becomes cold and deficient, resulting in severe diarrhea that is hard to control; if purgatives are not used, death is certain; if they are used, the condition remains critical and difficult to save. Many people die from this after severe illnesses; one must be extremely cautious in care. After recent recovery, one should only eat thin rice gruel. It is better to eat little and feel hungry than to become full. Do not consume other foods; even if desired, do not give them. After some time, one can gradually consume mutton gruel or mutton soup broth. Pork and dog meat must absolutely be avoided.
(From Volume I, Guangji's Formula for Treating Recurrence of Cold Damage due to Food and Labor, with Headache and High Fever, Gardenia Decoction.)

It is suitable for Cold Damage from one to two days up to ten-plus days where the condition is critical, fever persists after sweating, or heat remains after vomiting/purging. It is particularly effective for stopping severe diarrhea. First boil Da Qing and Gan Cao to obtain four sheng, remove dregs, add E Jiao and Chi, filter out dregs once E Jiao is fully dissolved, ensuring Chi does not disintegrate. Soak E Jiao in advance to dissolve. Dietary restrictions apply as above.
