The etiology lies in the patient's prior deficiency of blood and qi, compounded by invasion from deficient pathogens. Following treatments such as sweating, vomiting, or purging, the meridians are comprehensively damaged, yin and yang energies are exhausted and severed, and although the pathogenic heat begins to dissipate, the true qi remains scarce. The five zang organs are still deficient, the spleen and stomach transformation functions have not yet recovered, and there is a lack of body fluids to nourish the body. Consequently, emaciation and weakness occur, giving rise to disease. (From Volume VIII)
