[Pathogenesis] The Wei-Qi (Defensive Qi) circulates in the Yang aspects during the day and in the Yin aspects at night. Yin governs the night, and the night governs sleep. When Yang Qi is exhausted and Yin Qi is abundant, the eyes close for sleep. Currently, heat pathogens have not yet dissipated and merge with the Qi of the various Yang meridians, causing an exclusive excess of Yang and a relative deficiency of Yin. Therefore, even after the illness has passed, if one still cannot sleep, it is because the Yin Qi has not returned to its original state. (Excerpted from *Shanghan Lun* by Zhang Zhongjing)
[Formula 1] Treats the syndrome of deficiency-heat irritability and insomnia following sweating, emesis, or purgation for cold damage. Severe cases involve tossing and turning and profound inner distress and restlessness. This belongs to the Zhi Zi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) syndrome.
Ingredients: Fei Zhi Zi (Large Gardeniae Fructus, 14 pieces, broken open) Xiang Chi (Fragrant Fermented Soybeans, 4 he, wrapped in silk cloth)
Preparation and Administration: Take the above two ingredients, add four sheng of water. First decoct Zhi Zi until two and a half sheng remain, remove the dregs, add Chi, and continue decocting until one and a half sheng remains. Remove the soybeans. Divide into two doses and take warm. If vomiting occurs, stop taking the remaining dose.
[Formula 2] *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* treats deficiency-heat irritability and insomnia after recovery from severe disease, accompanied by abdominal pain and inner restlessness. Wu Mei Chi Tang (Olive Fruit and Fermented Soybean Decoction).
Ingredients: Xiang Chi (Fragrant Fermented Soybeans, 7 he, wrapped in silk cloth) Wu Mei (Chinese Olive Fruit, 14 pieces, broken open)
Preparation and Administration: Take the above two ingredients, add four sheng of water. First decoct Wu Mei until two and a half sheng remain, add Chi, and continue decocting until one and a half sheng remains. Remove the dregs. Divide into two doses and take warm. If Wu Mei is unavailable, use Si Mu Zhi Zi (Four Gardeniae Fructus) as a substitute.
[Formula 3] Ban Xia Fu Ling Tang (Pinellia and Poria Decoction)
Ingredients: Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 3 liang, washed) Shu Mi (Sorghum Vulgare Semen, 1 sheng) Fu Ling (Poria, 4 liang)

Combine to decoct the herbs until five sheng remain. Remove the dregs. Divide into five doses and take warm. Avoid mutton, maltose, vinegar, etc. (All from Volume I)
[Formula 4] Shen Shi Suan Zao Tang (Deep Master's Sour Jujube Decoction), treats irritability, fatigue, and inability to sleep day or night following cold damage or post-emesis/purgation treatment.
Ingredients: Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 4 sheng) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 sheng, heart removed) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, honey-fried) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 2 liang) Fu Ling (Poria, 2 liang) Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 2 liang) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 liang)
