Pathogenesis: After sweating therapy for Taiyang disease (Taiyang illness), perspiration continues excessively, leading to a deficiency of body fluids and extreme dryness in the Stomach. With latent heat in the Small Intestine, urination becomes obstructed. (From Volume 8)
Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun* states: In Shaoyin disease (Shaoyin illness), if symptoms persist for two to three days and progress to four or five days, presenting with abdominal pain, difficulty in urination, heaviness and pain in the limbs, and spontaneous diarrhea, this indicates water retention. If accompanied by cough, or spontaneous normal urination, or diarrhea, or vomiting, Zhenwu Tang (True Warrior Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Formula Composition: Poria (Fu Ling, 3 liang), White Peony Root (Bai Shao Yao, 3 liang), Prepared Aconite Root (Fu Zi, 1 piece, processed, peeled, broken into 8 slices), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Bai Zhu, 3 liang), Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang, 3 liang, peeled).
The above five herbs are cut, boiled in 8 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng, strained, and taken warm at 7 ge per dose, three times daily. If coughing occurs, add Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi, 0.5 sheng), Asarum Root (Xi Xin, 1 liang), and Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang, 1 liang). If urination is spontaneous and profuse, remove Poria. If diarrhea occurs, remove White Peony Root and add Dried Ginger (2 liang). If vomiting occurs, remove Aconite Root and add Fresh Ginger, bringing the total amount of Fresh Ginger to half a jin. Avoid vinegar, pork, plums, peaches, and sparrow meat. (From Volume 6; identical to *Shen Shi Fang*, also effective for epidemic febrile diseases)
Furthermore: For Taiyang disease lasting six or seven days, where sweating has been performed followed by purging, resulting in fullness and binding in the chest and hypochondrium, difficulty in urination, thirst without vomiting, only sweating on the head, alternating chills and fever, and irritability, this indicates the exterior syndrome is unresolved. Xiao Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang (Minor Bupleurum, Cinnamon Twig, and Dried Ginger Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Formula Composition: Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu, 0.5 jin), Cinnamon Twig (Gui Xin, 3 liang), Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin, 3 liang), Oyster Shell (Mu Li, 2 liang, calcined), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, 2 liang, honey-fried), Trichosanthes Root (Gua Lou Gen, 4 liang), Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang, 2 liang).
The above seven herbs are cut, boiled in 1.2 dou of water until reduced to 6 sheng, strained, and further concentrated to 3 sheng. Take 1 sheng warm, three times daily. After the first dose, slight irritability may occur, followed by sweating and recovery. Avoid raw green onions, seaweed, and Chinese cabbage. (From Volume 4)
Furthermore: To treat Taiyang disease after seven or eight days, where the body turns yellow like an orange peel, with difficulty in urination and mild abdominal fullness, Yin Chen Tang (Artemisia Capillaris Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Formula Composition: Artemisia Capillaris Herba (Yin Chen, 6 liang), Gardenia Fruit (Zhi Zi, 14 pieces, broken), Rhubarb (Da Huang, 2 liang, peeled, washed with wine, broken into 3 slices).
The above three herbs are boiled in 1.2 dou of water. First, boil Artemisia Capillaris Herba until the water reduces by 2 sheng, strain, then add the other two herbs and boil to obtain 3 sheng. Strain and divide into three warm doses, taken three times daily. When urination becomes free, the urine will resemble soap pod foam and be reddish in color. After one night, abdominal fullness decreases, and the jaundice resolves through urination. (From Volume 5; identical to Zhang Wenzhong and *Qian Jin Fang*)
Furthermore: After taking Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) or undergoing purging, if there remains stiffness and pain in the head and nape, fever without sweating, fullness and mild pain below the heart, and difficulty in urination, Gui Zhi Qu Gui Jia Fu Ling Bai Zhu Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction minus Cinnamon Twig plus Poria and Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Formula Composition: White Peony Root (Bai Shao Yao), Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang, cut), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Bai Zhu), Poria (Fu Ling, each 3 liang), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, 2 liang, honey-fried), Jujube (Da Zao, 12 pieces, broken).
The above six herbs are cut, boiled in 8 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng, strained, and taken warm at 1 sheng per dose. Recovery occurs when urination becomes free. Avoid seaweed, Chinese cabbage, vinegar, plums, peaches, and sparrow meat.
*Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* treats lower abdominal fullness and inability to urinate, also applicable to epidemic febrile diseases.
Grind Realgar (Xiong Huang) into fine powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of jujube seeds, insert into the urethra to a depth of half cun. (From Volume 2; identical to Zhang Wenzhong)
*Qian Jin Yi Fang* treats Shaoyin disease with cold extremities (Si Ni), where the patient may have cough, palpitations, difficulty in urination, abdominal pain, or diarrhea with a sensation of rectal heaviness. Si Ni San (Four Reversal Powder) is the primary treatment.
Formula Composition: Licorice Root (Gan Cao, 10 parts, honey-fried), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhi Shi, 10 parts, honey-fried), Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu, 10 parts), White Peony Root (Bai Shao Yao, 10 parts).
The above four herbs are crushed and sifted. Take one fang cun bi (a square-inch measure) mixed with rice water, three times daily. For cough, add Schisandra Berry and Dried Ginger (each 5 parts), which also treats diarrhea. For palpitations, add Cinnamon Twig (5 parts). For difficulty in urination, add Poria (5 parts). For abdominal pain, add Aconite Root (1 piece). For diarrhea with rectal heaviness, first boil Scallion Bulb (Xie Bai, 2 sheng) in 5 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng. Add three fang cun bi of the powder to the decoction, boil to obtain 1.5 sheng, and divide into two doses. Avoid seaweed and Chinese cabbage. (Identical to Zhang Zhongjing and Fan Wang; From Volume 10)
Cui Shi's treatment for severe heat in Taiyang disease with difficulty in urinating is Hua Shi Tang (Talcum Decoction), also applicable to epidemic febrile diseases.
Formula Composition: Talcum (Hua Shi, 2 liang, powdered), Lepidium Seed (Ting Li Zi, 1 he, processed).
The above two herbs are boiled in 2 sheng of water to obtain 7 ge. Strain and take in one dose.

The above five herbs are cut, boiled in 8 sheng of water to obtain 2.5 sheng. Divide into three doses. Avoid seaweed and Chinese cabbage. (All from Volume 1; identical to *Gu Jin Lu Yan*)
