In the *Qianjin Yifang* (Supplement to the Thousand Golden Formulas), it is recorded that the Yellow Emperor asked Qibo, saying: "There are many prescriptions for malaria, yet few cure it. Why is this?" Qibo replied: "Malaria has twelve types." The Yellow Emperor said: "Regarding the names of the 'malaria ghosts,' I wish to hear them." Qibo said: "If you obtain the name of the malaria ghost, the disease will be cured; if not, a hundred prescriptions will fail to cure it." The Yellow Emperor said: "I wish to hear about the twelve time-periods corresponding to the malaria ghosts."
Those manifesting at the Yin hour (03:00–05:00) are caused by ghosts who died in prison; they require treatment.
Treatment: Place the patient with malaria on top of a kiln, apply ash and fire heat for one cycle, ensuring the fire does not extinguish, and the illness will resolve.
Those manifesting at the Mao hour (05:00–07:00) are caused by ghosts who died from whipping; they require treatment.
Treatment: Burn five-colored garments into ash, take a pinch amount (approximately three fingers' width) and mix it into wine for ingestion. If wine is unavailable, clear water may be used for administration.
Those manifesting at the Chen hour (07:00–09:00) are caused by ghosts who died from falling from trees; they require treatment.
Treatment: Have the patient climb to a high place on a tree, and plug the gaps between the tree roots with thorny branches; the illness will immediately resolve.
Those manifesting at the Si hour (09:00–11:00) are caused by ghosts who died from burning; they require treatment.
Treatment: Have the patient sit while the practitioner lights fires around the patient in a surrounding circle; the illness will resolve.
Those manifesting at the Wu hour (11:00–13:00) are caused by ghosts who died of hunger; they require treatment.
Treatment: Have the patient hold a torch made of fat, go to an uninhabited area in the fields, burn the fat incense, pretend to gather firewood, and then leave; the illness will resolve.
Those manifesting at the Wei hour (13:00–15:00) are caused by ghosts who died from drowning; they require treatment.
Treatment: When the patient is about to have an attack, have them cross flowing eastward water three times; the illness will resolve.
Those manifesting at the Shen hour (15:00–17:00) are caused by ghosts who died from self-stabbing; they require treatment.
Treatment: When the patient is about to have an attack, use a knife to stab a tomb, ascertain the deceased's surname and given name, and recite a spell saying, "If you recover, I will remove [the curse/the knife] for you"; the illness will resolve.
Those manifesting at the You hour (17:00–19:00) are caused by ghosts of servants or slaves who died; they require treatment.
Treatment: Have the patient lie supine on the end of a pestle used for pounding grain, and ensure no one speaks their name; the illness will resolve.
Those manifesting at the Xu hour (19:00–21:00) are caused by ghosts who died from hanging themselves; they require treatment.
Treatment: Tie the patient's hands, feet, waist, and head with a rope; the illness will resolve.
Those manifesting at the Hai hour (21:00–23:00) are caused by ghosts who died during theft/robbery; they require treatment.
Treatment: Prepare one knife and one arrow, apply ash-fire heat for one cycle, place the knife on the abdomen of the patient with malaria, and lay the arrow horizontally underneath; the illness will resolve.
Those manifesting at the Zi hour (23:00–01:00) are caused by ghosts of widows who died; they require treatment.
Treatment: Have the patient undress and lie supine on a bed in the eastern chamber. Hold a knife in the left hand and a staff in the right hand, striking continuously to maintain sound. Place a clay dish filled with water by the roadside; the illness will resolve.
Those manifesting at the Chou hour (01:00–03:00) are caused by ghosts who died from beheading; they require treatment.
