[Pathogenesis] The cause of constipation (impediment in defecation) lies in the disharmony of the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) and the five Zang organs, with an imbalance of cold and heat qi. Excessive heat qi invades the stomach and intestines, leading to the exhaustion and drying up of body fluids (Jin-Ye), thereby causing the stagnation of fecal matter.
Formulas from *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* (Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies) for treating constipation:
Grind sesame seeds (Huo Ma Ren, 火麻仁) and mix them with rice to cook into a porridge for consumption.
Another formula:
Insert a piece of soapberry (Zao Jiao, 皂角; text says "Shi", likely referring to Gleditsiae Fructus or similar suppository material) the size of a finger into the lower orifice (anus). (Both extracted from Volume VI)
Formulas from *Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) for treating constipation:
Moxibustion on both sides one cun lateral to the seventh thoracic vertebra, seven moxa cones per side.
Another formula:
