According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases): When a severe heat disease is in the exterior, sweating has been administered but the condition remains unresolved, or after vomiting and purging, the heat-toxin qi fails to dissipate, resulting in restlessness and delirious speech. This constitutes a syndrome of deficiency in the exterior and excess in the interior. The heat qi dries out the exterior, causing the body to develop macules resembling brocade patterns. Whenever macules appear, exterior-releasing drugs must not be used, as this will cause the sores to open and leak, worsening the ulceration due to the existing exterior deficiency. (From Volume 9)
*Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* (Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies) records: In recent years, there have been cases of epidemic macule-forming sores. Within a short time, the head, face, and entire body become covered. The lesions resemble fire blisters, all containing white pus. They rupture and regenerate continuously. If not treated immediately, severe cases will result in death within a few days. After recovery from treatment, the scars remain purple and dark, taking a year to fade. This is caused by malignant toxic qi. People say that this disease was acquired during the Jianwu era when fighting enemies in Nanyang; hence it is called "Lu Chuang" (Barbarian Sore). Physicians have studied treatments and found effective prescriptions.
Apply high-quality honey over the entire body onto the sores. Alternatively, decoct Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) with honey and frequently wipe the affected area. This is also excellent.
Another prescription: Boil Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) strongly in water, soak cotton cloth in it, and wash the sores. Soaking and boiling with Cujiu (Vinegar) is even better, though it may cause unbearable dryness and pain. (Both from Volume 2)
Wenzhong and Tao Shi stated that epidemic macule-forming sores spread over the whole body in a short time, all containing white pus. This is the prescription for malignant toxic qi.
It is said that in the Yonghui fourth year, this sore flowed eastward from the Western Regions into the Central Plains. Simply boiling and eating Kuaicaiye (Malvae Folium) and Suanqi (Allii Sativi Bulbus minced) can stop the progression. Drinking fresh Yangxue (Ovis Aries Blood) also stops it. It should be eaten urgently at the onset of illness; a small amount of rice with vegetables is also acceptable. (From Volume 2)
*Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: With exterior deficiency and interior excess, internal heat-toxin is abundant, attacking the Zang-Fu organs. The residual flow moves into the muscles, eventually forming these sores within the skin pores. In severe cases, they cover the entire body, resembling fire blisters. If the root is red and the head white, the toxicity is mild; if the color is purple-black, the toxicity is severe. The shape of the sore resembles a pea, thus also named Wandou Chuang (Smallpox/Pea Sore). A pulse that is Hong (Surging) and Shuo (Rapid) is its characteristic sign. (From Volume 9)
*Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) provides prescriptions for treating humans and six domestic animals suffering from epidemic heat qi disease and Wandou Chuang.
Boil Shurang juice (Juice from the husk of Setaria italica) strongly and wash the sores. If using Shurang alone, it will not cure. If the sores are black, crush Da Suan (Allii Tuberosi Bulbus) and apply it as a poultice. Alternatively, boil Gan Yuntaizhi (Dried Brassica parachinensis Juice) and wash.
Another prescription: Take Zhen Bosi Qingdai (True Persian Indigo Naturalis) the size of a date, take orally with water, and it will heal.
Another prescription for Wandou Chuang appearing after a heat disease: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 3 liang, remove hairs, add 2 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 8 he, and take in one dose. Avoid pork and cold water.
Another prescription for sores that are red-black and sized like scabies: Decoct Yangzhi (Sheep Fat) and rub/apply it.
Another prescription: Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 2 liang, add 3 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 1 sheng, take in one dose, effective.
Another prescription: Xiaodouxie (Minced Vigna angularis), mix with Jizi Bai (Album Ovi Galli) and apply.
Another prescription: Wipe the affected area with Yuebu (Moon Cloth).
Another prescription for treating Wandou Chuang at the initial stage of detection and impending eruption: Boil Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 5 liang and take orally. (*Yan Nian Mi Lu* agrees).
Another prescription for sores accompanied by irritability and pain: Muxiang Tang Prescription.
Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 2 liang, Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) 1 liang, Xunluxiang (Boswelliae Resina) 1 liang, Bai Fan (Alumen) 1 liang, Shexiang (Moschus) 2 fen.
The above five herbs, add 4 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 1.5 sheng, divide into two doses. If heat is excessive, add 1 liang of Sheng Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu); if unavailable, replace with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma). If the disease is mild, remove Alumen. This yields great efficacy.
Another prescription: Apply Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) mixed with Zhudannao (Suis Vesica Bile) to the sores. Do not disturb them. When the scab falls off, no scar remains. Sleeping on Huangtu Mo (Yellow Earth Powder) is beneficial. If this disease presents with difficult urination and blood in urine, and the sores turn black crusts without suppurating, it indicates organ failure and is incurable, leading to death.
Another prescription for severe internal eruptive sores:
Cu (Vinegar) 4 he, Da Zhu Dan (Gallus Domesticus Vesica Bile) 1 whole.
The above two ingredients, boil for three boils. Take 1 he per dose, five times daily. Highly effective. (All from Volume 10)
*Yan Nian Mi Lu* provides Daqing Tang Prescription for treating epidemic severe fever with headache and eruptions resembling peas covering the body.
Daqing (Indigotidis Folium) 3 liang, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) 14 pieces (split), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) 1 liang (crushed powder), Chi Dou (Fermented Soybean) 5 he.
The above four herbs, cut, add 5 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 2 sheng, divide into three doses. No dietary restrictions after taking.
*Gu Jin Lu Yan* provides Shuijie San Prescription for treating epidemic heat qi, which causes painful eruptions, releasing muscle layer tension and inducing sweating. (From Zhai Shiping)
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) 1 liang (remove joints), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 3 fen, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) 2 fen, Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 1 fen.
The above four herbs, pound and sieve, take orally with warm water, 2 fangcun bi (square-inch spoonfuls). Cover to induce sweating, take twice daily. Reduce dosage upon recovery. Avoid Haizao (Sargassum), Songcai (Brassica pekinensis), and raw Cong (Allium fistulosum). (*Yan Nian Mi Lu* agrees. From Volume 2. Another version includes Dahuang 3 fen, Gancao 2 fen).
