*Short Ju* treats sublin (dysuria during pregnancy) characterized by difficulty in both urination and defecation, and rapid breathing. If *Zhuling San* has been taken without improvement, it is appropriate to take *Gansui San* to purge the accumulation.
Taishan Chipi Gansui (Cortex Kansui Radix from Mount Tai, two liang).
The above single ingredient is pounded and sifted, mixed with two he of white honey. The dosage is like a soybean grain. If the patient feels vexation in the epigastrium after taking the medicine, or if there is slight defecation, administer once a day. If defecation does not occur, increase to twice a day. Gradually increase the dose up to half a qianbi (a small measuring spoon), stopping when slight defecation occurs. During this period, *Zhuling San* or *Huangbai Jisheng Tang* may be alternated; these formulas are found in the section treating sublin. (*Jingxin Lu* also records this in Volume 7 under the sublin section, containing only *Zhuling San* without *Huangbai Jisheng Tang*.)
*Gu Jin Lu Yan* treats pregnancy illness lasting six or seven days or more, where pathogenic factors enter the zang organs, causing fever and difficulty in both urination and defecation. This is the *Kuzi Tang* formula for calming the fetus and clearing heat.
Kuzi (Abutilon Semen, two sheng). Huashi (Talcum, four liang, crushed).
The above two ingredients are decocted in five sheng of water to obtain one sheng of liquid, which is taken all at once. Soon after, urination and defecation will become unobstructed, and the condition will heal. (From Volume 24.)
*Short Ju* treats sudden syncope with blindness and inability to recognize people during pregnancy, followed by brief awakening, recurrence of symptoms, and failure to regain consciousness again. This is called "Chong" disease (spasm/stiffness), also known as Zi Xian (eclampsia of pregnancy) or Zi Mao (pregnancy-related dizziness/syncope). For *Gegen Tang*, if fresh bamboo sap (Zhuli) is readily available for quick identification/administration, prepare the bamboo sap first, then decoct the herbal soup. If bamboo is distant and fresh sap cannot be obtained immediately, decoct the herbal soup first. Either method is acceptable; however, Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) is particularly effective in treating various conditions leading to cessation of breath and reviving the seemingly dead. It is not only effective for pregnant women dying from Chong but also verified for infants with sudden epilepsy or Jin Chuang (metal weapon injuries).
Method for making Zhuli:
Select newly felled Qingdan Bamboo (Qiongtheca suavis), cut it off, remove the nodes at both ends, leaving only the central node. Slice the bamboo and place it sideways so that both ends hang empty. Arrange it and burn the central part. Catch the juice flowing out from both ends in a vessel for consumption.
Additionally, the *Gegen Tang* mentioned above for treating Zi Mao treats eclampsia occurring near term due to wind-pathogen invasion causing Chong. Symptoms include sudden confusion, inability to recognize people, vomiting, vertigo, falling, brief awakening followed by recurrence. This is the formula for Zi Xian.
Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Gegen (Puerariae Radix), Danpi (Moutan Cortex, heart removed), Mufangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Guirou (Cinnamomi Cortex, chopped and stir-fried), Fuling (Poria), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, each two liang), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, each three liang).
The above fourteen ingredients are chopped and decocted in nine sheng of water to obtain three sheng of liquid, divided into two doses. Beimu facilitates childbirth; if not yet near term, replace it with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma). Avoid consuming Haizao (Sargassum), Songcai (Brassica pekinensis), and vinegar. (All from Volume 7.)
