Although people may have taken tonic herbs, if they do not understand the art of nurturing their nature and temperament, it is difficult to achieve longevity. The way of nurturing one's nature does not involve lying down immediately after a full meal, nor should one sit for long periods without movement; both practices damage longevity. One should engage in moderate physical exertion but avoid becoming exhausted from overwork, and one must not force oneself to do what is unbearable.
One should not eat to excess every night. After eating, one must walk to promote comfort before sitting or lying down. If food has not yet digested, contracting wind pathogens or sleeping while drunk will lead to the formation of accumulations (masses) and various diseases, or cause frequent Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome with sudden vomiting).
Furthermore, one should not drink water in extreme heat. If alcohol consumption is excessive, inducing vomiting quickly is preferable. One should not sleep facing the wind or fan oneself directly, as these actions induce illness. Forcing mental effort beyond one's capacity causes injury; sorrow and emaciation cause injury; lifting weights beyond one's strength causes injury. Generally, in winter, one should not seek extreme warmth; in summer, one should not seek extreme coolness. One should not sleep under fog, dew, starlight, or moonlight. Extreme cold, extreme heat, and strong winds should all be avoided to prevent irritating the Stomach. The five flavors entering the mouth should not be consumed in excess; excess consumption damages the Zang-Fu organs. Therefore, it is said: Excessive sour flavor injures the Spleen; excessive bitter flavor injures the Lungs; excessive pungent flavor injures the Liver; excessive salty flavor injures the Heart; excessive sweet flavor injures the Kidneys. This is the natural principle of the Five Elements. Moreover, initial injury may go unnoticed, but long-term effects damage longevity.
Eating raw meat is best done before noon. Among these two types of food (raw meat and fish sashimi), fish sashimi is particularly raw and cold. After noon, Yin and Yang energies intermingle, and the human abdomen follows the timing of heaven and earth; thus, accumulations do not form, and Huoluan does not occur. After You and Xu hours (5 PM - 9 PM), one should not eat. Not washing hands, face, and rinsing the mouth leads to dryness and lack of fluids in the Five Viscera. Additionally, in winter and summer, one should not use cold objects as pillows; stone and iron are particularly harmful, and wooden pillows are also harmful. Even if they do not cause direct harm, using them in youth can lead to dim vision. (Note: Although this section follows Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst), it applies not only to Xiao Ke but to all patients and healthy individuals alike; the same applies to restrictions on fish, meat, vegetables, rice, beans, etc.)
Mutton is highly tonifying for deficiency, but those suffering from Wind disorders or Hong Kong Jiao (podagra/foot swelling and numbness) should not eat it. If eaten occasionally, it should be boiled with fresh ginger. Pork, rabbit meat, quail meat, beef, donkey/horse meat, large carp, and river pig stomach (pufferfish viscera) are prohibited and should not be eaten. Deer meat is slightly cold and should be eaten in small amounts; chevron meat is warm but should not be roasted, as doing so induces Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst). Long-term consumption of roasted meat impedes blood circulation. Pheasant is unsuitable for consumption after spring. Carp that are six or seven cun (approx. 20-23 cm) or longer are beneficial to humans, but they should not be eaten raw. Raw dried meat jerky should not be eaten, as it is indigestible and transforms into parasites within the body.
