Zhang Wenzhong's Ge Shi therapy treats Taiyang disease (disease of the Taiyang channel) and warm disease, with symptoms of headache, high fever, and surging pulse. It is prescribed for the first one or two days after onset.
Take one chicken egg, place it in half a sheng of cold water, stir until well mixed. Boil another one sheng of water separately. Pour the egg-water into the boiling soup, stir rapidly, and adjust to a suitable temperature. Take it all at once, cover the body to induce sweating. (Same as Beiji Fang)
Also treats Taiyang disease persisting for more than two or three days, up to seven or eight days without resolution; Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) may be administered.
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, half jin), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, each two liang), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, five he, washed), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, twelve pieces, split).
The above seven ingredients are cut, boiled in one dou two sheng of water, decocted to obtain three sheng of liquid. Divide into three doses. Cover slightly to induce mild sweating. Recovery occurs within half a day; if not recovered, administer another dose. Avoid mutton, malt sugar, seaweed, and Songcai (Brassica pekinensis). (Same as Beiji Fang, Fan Wang Qianjin Yi Fang)
Also treats Taiyang disease and warm disease persisting for more than three days, characterized by fullness in the chest. Shi says that if Taiyang disease or warm disease has persisted for three or four days, and there is a sensation of disgust in the chest with an urge to vomit, Jiu Dan Tang (Wine and Pig Gallbladder Decoction) should be taken.
Ku Jiu (Vinegar, half sheng), Zhu Dan (Pig Gallbladder, one piece).
Mix the above two ingredients and take them all. Vomiting leads to cure; it is highly effective. Zhi says it is excellent for removing toxic qi. (Same as Hu Qia Ji Yan Bei Ji Qian Jin)
Also treats a near-effective formula for Taiyang disease: any case requiring emesis due to evil phlegm-fluid retention, Taiyang heat disease, or miasma malaria.
Yan Mo (Salt powder, one large spoon).
Take this single ingredient, mix with raw and cooked water, and ingest. Vomiting will occur shortly. If vomiting is insufficient, take again the next morning; very effective. (Same as Beiji Fang)
Also uses Gua Di San (Melon Seed Powder) to treat chest oppression and blockage caused by Taiyang disease, indicating the suitability of emetic therapy.
Gua Di (Thladianthidis Fructus), Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean, each one liang).
Crush the above two ingredients into powder. Take one qian bi with white boiled water. Induce vomiting until the pathogen is expelled and the illness resolves. (Same as Beiji Jing Xin Lu Fan Wang)
Also treats Taiyang disease persisting for four or five days, with headache, body pain, flesh hot as fire, and pathogen entering the stomach and intestines, indicating the need for purgative therapy.
Sheng Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, fresh, one sheng, heart removed), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, fresh, cut one sheng), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, two liang), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, five and a half liang), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, two and a half liang).
Boil the above five ingredients in eight sheng of water, decoct to obtain two and a half sheng. Add Mang Xiao, boil five times. Divide into five doses. Stop when bowel movement is achieved. Avoid Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba. (Same as Beiji Fang)
Also treats Taiyang disease persisting for more than five days, indicating the need for purgation. Shi says this applies to cases with sweating, hard stool, and delirium.
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, four liang), Nong Po (Moutan Cortex, two liang, roasted), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, four pieces, roasted).
Boil the above three ingredients in four sheng of water, decoct to obtain one sheng two he. Divide into two doses. If bowel movement occurs, stop after one dose. (This is Zhongjing's formula, same as Beiji Fan Wang, repeats with previous Qianjin Cui Shi Fang)
Also treats Taiyang disease persisting for eight or nine days without recovery, termed Bai Tai Yang (Defeated Taiyang disease), where various medicines fail to eliminate the pathogen.
Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, roasted), Shu Sheng Ma (Polygoni Multiflori Caulis, from Shu), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), Wu Mei (Mume Fructus), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, roasted), Xi Jiao (Rhino Ceratostigma, shaved), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, each two liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, one liang, roasted), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, fresh, eight he).
Cut the above nine ingredients, boil in seven sheng of water, decoct to obtain two and a half sheng. Divide into five doses. Take three times during the day and twice at night. Avoid seaweed, Songcai, Amaranthus, and Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba. (Same as Beiji Fang)
Also for cases of no bowel movement for ten-plus days, use Cheng Qi Wan (Cheng Qi Pill).
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Xing Ren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen, skin and tip removed, two liang each), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, one liang, roasted), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, one he).
Crush and sieve the above four ingredients. Mix with honey to form pills the size of a bullet. Grind one pill in six or seven he of Fresh Ginger Decoction and take. Bowel movement occurs shortly. If not, take another pill. Stop when movement is achieved. (Same as Beiji Fang)
Also treats Late-Onset Taiyang Disease, defined as onset from March to year-end.
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, fresh, one jin, crushed), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, twenty pieces, split), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, three liang), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, five liang each).
Cut the above five ingredients, boil in eight sheng of water, decoct to obtain three sheng. Divide into five doses. Take frequently. If unresolved, continue taking. If head and face become red, remove Shi Gao and use Gan Ge (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, four liang). If Di Huang is unavailable, use Chi Dou Chi (Perillae Folium, fermented, one sheng). Boil to obtain three sheng, divide into three doses. Avoid Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba. (Same as Beiji Fang, both from Volume II)
