In the *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold), the disease known as Shidan (Damp Jaundice) begins with pain throughout the entire body, fever, and a yellowish-black complexion. After seven or eight days, high fever develops, with heat residing in the interior. Blood stasis should be purged; the expelled blood resembles pig liver. If there is fullness in the lower abdomen, urgent purgation is required. This condition may also result in generalized jaundice, yellowing of the eyes, abdominal distension, and difficult urination. Formula: Fanshi San (Alum Powder).
Fanshi (Alumen, 5 liang) Huashi (Talcum, 5 liang)
Grind the above two ingredients into powder. Administer one fangcun bi (a measure approx. 1 cubic inch) with barley porridge juice, three times daily. Take before meals. When bowel movements become smooth and bloody discharge occurs, sweating will ensue and the patient will recover. (*Shenshi Fang* and *Gujin Luyan* are identical; cited from Volume 10).
From *Gujin Luyan*, Nine Types of Dan (Jaundice/Heat-Toxin): Qinwang San (King of Qin Powder).
Wei Dan (Stomach Heat-Toxin): Excessive eating and drinking preference. (Zizhiren [Gardenia Seed] treats this.)
Xin Dan (Heart Heat-Toxin): Vexation and heat in the heart. (Gegen [Kudzu Root] treats this.)
Shen Dan (Kidney Heat-Toxin): Dry lips. (Tinglizi [Lepidium Seed] treats this.)
Pi Dan (Spleen Heat-Toxin): Red urine with low volume, palpitations and fear. (Gualou [Trichosanthes Fruit] treats this.)
Fei Dan (Lung Heat-Toxin): Low fluid intake but frequent urination. (Qinjiao Han [Pepper sweat/powder], Gudi [Momordica Seed] treat this; alternatively called Gaodan.)
She Dan (Tongue Heat-Toxin): Thirst with frequent urination. (Shizhongru [Stalactite] treats this.)
Rou Dan (Flesh Heat-Toxin): White urine. (Ningshuishi [Halloysitum Rubrum] treats this.)
Sui Dan (Marrow Heat-Toxin): Deep-set eye sockets, excessive drowsiness. (Muli [Oyster Shell], Zexie [Alisma Rhizome] treat this.)
Gan Dan (Liver Heat-Toxin): Stomach heat, excessive water intake, water qi agitating the liver. (Baizhu [Atractylodes Rhizome] treats this.)
The above eleven ingredients constitute Qinwang San. Use equal parts of each. Add two fen for the affected area. Grind, mix, and sieve. Administer five fenbi with liquid, three times daily, gradually increasing to one fangcun bi. Avoid peaches, plums, and sparrow meat.
Gaodan (Fat Jaundice): Low fluid intake but frequent urination. Formula: Qinjiao San (Pepper Powder).
Qinjiao (Zanthoxylum Pepper, 1 fen, processed), Gudi (Momordica Seed, 2 fen)
Grind and sieve the above two ingredients. Administer one fangcun bi with water, three times daily. (*Shenshi Fang*, *Qianjin Fang* are identical; cited from Volume 27).
Etiology: Summer heat injury leads to malaria in autumn. Malaria attacks at fixed times because pathogenic factors lodge in Fengfu (GV16), descending along the Du Meridian. Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) gathers at Fengfu once every day and night. The next day it descends one vertebral level, causing the attack time to delay progressively. This is because the pathogen initially invades the back. Each time it reaches Fengfu, the Couli (pores) open, allowing the pathogen to enter and trigger the disease. Hence, daily attacks occur later. Conversely, if the pathogen descends one level daily from Fengfu, after twenty-five days, attacks occur earlier. Intermittent attacks (every other day) occur because the pathogen binds internally to the Zang organs and spreads horizontally to the Mu Yuan (semi-interior/exterior space). The path is long, the qi is deep, and movement is slow; it cannot travel with Wei Qi and must accumulate to trigger an attack. When Wei Qi reaches Fengfu, Couli open, pathogen enters, and combines with the neck/back region, descending along the spine. Thus, depending on deficiency/excess and invasion site, the pathogen may not hit Fengfu directly. If it strikes the head/neck, Qi rises to the head. Disease occurs when Wei Qi meets the pathogen. Therefore, "Fengfu" is not a fixed location but wherever Wei Qi emerges and Couli open, meeting the pathogen. Wind and Malaria are similar, but wind remains constant while malaria has remissions. Why? Wind stays local; Malaria qi sinks into the meridians and binds internally. It acts when Wei Qi responds. Yang should descend but fails; Yin should ascend but fails. Pathogen invasion causes Yang to curl (chill) and Yin to tighten (shivering). The struggle between chill and shivering is named Malaria. Weakness leads to fever; floating pulse leads to sweating. Morning invasion causes morning attack; evening invasion causes evening attack. Malaria patients are emaciated with gooseflesh on the skin. Question: If malaria starts on the first day of the lunar month, it should heal by the fifteenth. If not, it should resolve by month's end.
Guangji Changshan San (Polygalae Radix Powder) for Malaria.
Changshan (Polygalae Radix, 5 fen) Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 2 fen) Shuqi (Radix Bupleuri cum Rhamno, 1 fen)
Grind the above three into powder. Take two qianbi with well-water boiled rice (half he). Take all at once. Vomiting will follow shortly; upon completion, recovery ensues. Avoid raw scallions, raw vegetables, fruits, cold items, and greasy foods.
Another Formula for Malaria: Changshan Tang (Polygalae Radix Decoction).
Changshan (Polygalae Radix, 3 liang)
Cut the single ingredient. Soak in Jiangshui (fermented grain liquid) 3 sheng overnight. Boil to obtain 1 sheng. Take all at once before the attack. Mild vomiting indicates cure. Avoid raw scallions and vegetables. (*Jinxiao* intermittent/evening malaria formula by Zhang Wenzhong is identical; cited from Vol 1).
Zhang Zhongjing’s *Shanghan Lun* discusses Malaria: When Yin is isolated and exhausted, and Yang fires alone, with a faint pulse, symptoms include shortness of breath, vexation, fullness, hot hands/feet, and nausea. This is called Pin Malaria (Yin Malaria). If only heat without chills, the pathogen is in the Heart, lodging in the muscle spaces, causing emaciation. Pulse diagnosis: Malaria pulses are naturally Xian (Wiry). Xian-Shuo (Wiry-Rapid) indicates much heat; Xian-Chi (Wiry-Slow) indicates much cold. Xian-Xiao-Jin (Wiry-Small-Tight) benefits from purgation; Xian-Chi benefits from warming herbs; Xian-Jin (Wiry-Tight) benefits from diaphoresis.
Regarding chronic malaria lasting three years with continuous attacks: There is a Pi Mass (mass) under the hypochondrium. Do not attack the mass directly; instead, weaken the fluids/Jin-Ye. Induce sweating before the attack. If chills precede the attack after taking medicine, cover with clothes until sweating and urination normalize. Malaria patients are emaciated with gooseflesh.
Question: If malaria starts on the first day, healing by the fifteenth is expected. If not, healing by month-end is expected. If still not healed? Master says: This forms a Zheng Jia (fixed mass) named Nuomu (Malaria Mother). Treat urgently with Da Biejia Jian Wan (Large Turtle Shell Pill).
Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 12 fen, roasted), Wushan (Iris Tectorii Rhizoma, 3 fen), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 fen), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 6 fen), Shufu (Psoraleae Fructus, 3 fen, roasted), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 3 fen), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 fen), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 3 fen), Tingli (Descurainiae Semen, 2 fen, roasted), Shiwei (Pyrrosiae Folium, 2 fen), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 3 fen, roasted), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex, 5 fen), Qumai (Dianthi Herba, 2 fen), Ziwei (Campsis Flower, 3 fen), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 fen, washed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 fen), E Chong (Eupolyphaga Steleophaga, 5 fen, roasted), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, 3 fen, roasted), Fengke (Apis Nidus, 4 fen, roasted), Chixiao (Natrii Sulfas, 12 fen)
Grind the above 23 ingredients. Take 1 dou of earth from a forge stove, add 1 hu 5 sheng of clear wine. Soak earth until wine reduces by half. Add Biejia and boil until it dissolves like glue. Strain the juice. Add other medicines and decoct into pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 7 pills on an empty stomach, three times daily. Avoid amaranth, raw scallions, coriander, mutton, and maltose. (*Qianjin* includes Haizao, Daji, Mengchong; excludes Chixiao, Shufu; uses forge ash).
For Malaria with thirst, use Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) removing Banxia and adding Gualou.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 8 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 3 liang), Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang, roasted), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 liang)
Cut the above seven. Boil in 12 sheng water to obtain 6 sheng. Remove dregs, re-decoct to obtain 3 sheng. Take 1 sheng warm, three times daily. Avoid Haizao, Songcai. (*Jingxin Lu* for Labor Malaria; cited from Vol 15).
*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept up My Sleeve) for various Malarial fevers.
Take Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba, 1 bunch).
Soak in 1 sheng water, squeeze out juice, drink entirely. (*Beiji* by Zhang Wenzhong is identical).
Another Formula:
Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 3 liang, roasted)
Grind to powder. Take one fangcun bi with wine during the attack. Three doses plus moxibustion guarantee cure. Avoid amaranth.
Another Formula:
Niuxi Jingye (Achyranthis Bidentatae Caulis et Folium, 1 bunch, cut). Soak in 3 sheng wine overnight. Divide into three doses. Aim for mild intoxication. If not cured, repeat. Max three doses. (Wenzhong *Beiji*, *Jiyuan* identical; cited from Vol 1).
*Shenshi Fang*: For Malaria with phlegm stuck in the diaphragm unable to vomit, induce vomiting. Changshan Wumei Tang (Polygalae Radix and Mume Fructus Decoction).
Wumei (Mume Fructus, 0.5 liang), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 0.5 liang), Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos, 0.5 liang), Chi (Fermented Soybean, 5 he, wrapped in silk), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang), Changshan (Polygalae Radix, 0.5 liang)
Cut the above six. Boil in 3 sheng wine and 4 sheng water to obtain 2 sheng. Divide into three doses. Must induce vomiting. Alternative: use 3 sheng total liquid. Avoid raw scallions, mutton, maltose, raw vegetables. (Alternative version lacks Banxia and Changshan).
Divine Pill for Malaria:
Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 3 fen), Qiandan (Minium, 3 fen), Tianxiong (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 10 fen, roasted)
Grind and sieve. Mix with honey into pills. Initial dose: 2 pills (wutong seed size). Before attack: 2 pills. Warmth in the middle and mild numbness in limbs indicate efficacy. Do not take on a full stomach. Resume normal diet after malaria stops. Highly effective. (*Beiji* Wenzhong identical).
Diaoge Tang (Diaphragm-Lifting Decoction) for Malaria:
Changshan (Polygalae Radix, 3 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang, roasted), Songsuo (Dendroliani Pilula, 2 liang), Wumei (Mume Fructus, 14 pieces), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 2 liang), Gudi (Momordica Seed, 14 pieces)
Cut the above seven. Soak in 2 sheng wine overnight. Next morning, add 4 sheng water, boil to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. Avoid Haizao, raw scallions, raw vegetables, Songcai.
For Malaria with solid accumulation and accumulated heat, vexation, confusion, frequent chills/fever, severe fatigue: Changshan Dahuang Tang (Polygalae Radix and Rheum Decoction).
Changshan (Polygalae Radix, 3 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang, roasted), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, 2 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang)
Cut the above four. Boil in 1 dou water to obtain 3.5 sheng. Add Dahuang, boil to obtain 3 sheng. Strain and cool. Initial dose: 7 he. Middle dose: 8 he. Before attack: 9 he. Wang Wenzhou’s son recovered from critical malaria with this. Avoid Haizao, Songcai, raw scallions, raw vegetables.
Chun Lao Tang (Strong Wine Decoction) for Malaria:
Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 liang), Wumei (Mume Fructus, 21-30 pieces, split), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang, roasted), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 2 liang), Changshan (Polygalae Radix, 3 liang), Hegeng (Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Palmitus, 3 liang)
Cut the above six. Boil in 6 sheng water to obtain 1 sheng, called "Chun". Take all at once before attack. Re-boil residue in 3 sheng water to obtain 1 sheng, called "Lao". Take all at once at the time of attack if not cured. Very good. Another method: Take 1 sheng of "Lao" at dawn on attack day; apply "Chun" to the head. If attack imminent, take "Chun". Divine effect. Two methods differ. Avoid Haizao, Songcai, raw scallions, raw vegetables. (Cited from Vol 22).
*Qianjin Fang* Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) for Malaria Diaphoresis:
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 4 liang, nodes removed), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 4 liang), Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus, 4 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, roasted)
