The *Ji Yan Fang* (Collected Proven Prescriptions) records: For those who have suffered burns, one must initially be cautious and strictly avoid applying cold water, cold objects, or mud from wells to the wounds. If burn sores are exposed to cold, the pathogenic heat will penetrate deeper into the bones, leading to muscle spasms and contraction. The reason for such symptoms in patients is precisely due to this cause.
Additionally, a prescription for treating sudden severe burns where the patient suffers intense pain, feels stifled, loses consciousness, and becomes unresponsive.
Take one sheng of fresh, warm urine and drink it; also drink honey mixed with cold water. If the patient has trismus (lockjaw) and cannot open their mouth, forcibly pry it open and administer the liquid. Once the sensation of suffocation subsides and consciousness returns, then treat the external wounds, which yields better results. (This prescription appears in *Qian Jin Fang*, *Gu Jin Lu Yan*, and *Cui Shi Duan Ju*, recorded in Volume 8.)
A prescription from *Qian Jin Fang* for treating burn sores.
Mix fried sesame oil with powder made from crushed Gardenia fruit (Zhizi) and apply it topically; applying a thick layer is best. If the sore has already formed, sift white ash powder onto it, and it will heal. (Recorded in Volume 26.)
An effective recent prescription for treating fire-oil burns and "Tian Huo Chuang" (a type of acute skin condition resembling burns).
This condition initially presents as blisters rising like boiling bubbles, gradually enlarging to resemble water blisters. The skin turns red and feels intensely hot, spreading rapidly over a short period. This describes the pathology.
Use any amount of You Tai Cai (Brassica rapa var. oleifera), crush and squeeze out the juice. Take equal parts of Xiao Ming Jiao (Mangxiao/Nitrum), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), and Sheng Tie Yi (Iron Rust). Powder the Da Huang and mix it equally with Xiao Ming Jiao. Blend this mixture with You Tai Cai juice to form a thin paste. Apply the medicine to the sores using a blunt brush. Reapply when dry; frequent use is highly effective. Master Yan stated that boiling You Tai Cai in winter to extract juice for washing is also acceptable.
Liu Juanzi's Mazigao (Hemp Seed Ointment) for treating flesh necrosis caused by burns.
Hemp seeds (Yi Ge/Cup), Cortex Platycladi (Bai Bai Pi), Gardenia fruit (Sui/Zhizi, crushed), Angelica dahurica (Baizhi), Licorice root (Gancao, each Yi Liang), and Cortex Salicis (Liu Bai Pi, Yi Liang).
These six herbs are cut into small pieces. Decoct them in one sheng of lard using the "three ups and three downs" method (boiling and removing from heat repeatedly three times). Strain the dregs and apply the ointment to the sores three times daily. (Recorded in Volume 5.)
*Ji Yan Fang*'s Gaofang (Ointment Prescription) for treating burnt, ulcerated sores.
Cortex Platycladi (Bai Bai Pi), Rehmannia glutinosa root (Sheng Dihuang, crushed, each Si Liang), Bitter bamboo leaves (Ku Zhu Ye), and Licorice root (Gancao, each Si Liang).
Cut these four herbs. Decoct them in one jin of lard using the "three ups and three downs" method. Filter out the dregs once prepared. Massage and apply the ointment to the sores twice daily. (*Qian Jin Fang* omits Rehmannia; *Shen Shi Fang*, *Qian Jin Fang*'s Liu Juanzi formula, and Fan Wang's formula are all recorded in Volume 8.)
*Qian Jin Fang*'s prescription for treating fire-burned, ulcerated sores.
Chew cooked Cortex Ulmi (Yu Bai Pi) thoroughly and apply it as a poultice to the affected area until healed.
Another prescription for treating deteriorated burn sores.
Cut Cortex Platycladi (Bai Bai Pi). Mix with lard rendered in the twelfth lunar month, soak together, and boil for four or five boils until the color changes. Strain the dregs and apply to the sores. (Fan Wang's formula is also recorded in Volume 26.)
Another prescription.
Cortex Platycladi (Bai Bai Pi), Rehmannia glutinosa root (Sheng Dihuang), Scutellaria baicalensis root (Huang Qin), Elsholtzia splendens herb (She Xian), Gardenia fruit (Zhi Zi), and Bitter bamboo leaves (Ku Zhu Ye) (each Yi Liang).
Cut these six herbs. Decoct them in half a sheng of sheep marrow using the "three ups and three downs" method. Strain the dregs and apply to the sores until healed.
