The method for moxibustion on scrofula from *Qianjin Fang*.
Apply one hundred moxa cones (each burning moxa cone counts as one "zhuang") to the hollow area where the lesion is located in both axillae.
Another method:
Crush fresh *Radix Scrophulariae* (Zhanglu) and form it into a cake. Place the cake over the ulcerated opening, and apply moxa cones on top of the cake. Replace the cake when it becomes dry and cooked. Apply three to four moxa cones per session.
Yet another method:
Apply thirty moxa cones each to the Wuli (ST24) and Daying (ST5) acupoints.
Yet another method:
*Tingli* (3 he) and *Chishao* (1 sheng).
Pound the above two ingredients together until extremely fine. Form into cakes approximately two fen thick and the size of a large coin. Place one cake directly over the wound opening. Moisten a moxa cone the size of a small finger and apply three moxa cones onto the cake. Liu Juanzi.
Yet another method:
For all cases of scrofula located on the neck, as well as any flesh nodules or masses appearing anywhere on the body that develop into ulcers or abscesses: Take a single-clove garlic, cut off both ends, leave the core intact, and hollow out the center to enlarge it. (Text implies placing this on the lesion for moxibustion, though the specific action is truncated in the source).
Another prescription:
On the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, before sunrise, gather hemp flowers; on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, gather mugwort. Mix equal parts, pound into powder, and form moxa cones. Apply one hundred moxa cones. (All from Volume 24).
*Guangji Fang* categorizes scrofula into nine types, none exceeding this prescription.
*Yuanqing* (four legs), *Haizao* (8 fen, washed), *Kunbu* (8 fen, washed), *Xionghuang* (8 fen, ground), *Ligu* (3 qian, roasted), *Muli* (4 qian, boiled), *Dichan* (20 pieces, boiled), *Qingmuxiang* (3 qian).
Pound and sieve the above eight ingredients into a powder. Take one fangcun bi with wine, twice daily. The pathogen will exit via urination, resembling rotting sinews. Avoid raw/cold foods, sticky foods, pork, fish/meat, and stale/odorous substances. (From Volume 5).
Liu Juanzi’s prescription for rat-hole scrofula (scrofula).
Dead dung beetle (burned to ash).
Mix the above single ingredient with vinegar and apply to the lesion. Repeat applications until healed. First wash the area with salt water. (Identical to *Gujin Luyan* and *Qianjin*).
Another prescription:
On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, grind Lou Tao (uncertain identity) into powder. Wash and wipe the lesion dry with salt water first, then apply the powder to the wound.
Another prescription:
*Wutou* (processed) and *Fuzi* (processed, 2 liang each).
Coarsely crush the above two ingredients and soak them in five sheng of strong sour wine. When the wine evaporates/dries, add more wine. Repeat until the wine is exhausted. Dry the mixture, grind into powder, and take one fangcun bi with wine, three times daily. Avoid pork and cold water.
Zhang Ziren’s essential prescription for rat-hole scrofula.
*Zaxipi* (Oak bark, 5 sheng).
Boil the above single ingredient in ten dou of water. After boiling, remove the skin. Decoct until two sheng of liquid remain. Drink slowly until finished. Old fleshy tissue should be expelled, leading to cure. (Identical to *Beiji Wenzhong* and *Gujin Luyan*, from Volume 6).
*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* treats flesh growing inside the nose and tumors protruding externally, accompanied by pus discharge. This is a prescription for bee-scrofula.
Roast honeycomb until charred, grind to powder, and take one fangcun bi with wine, once daily.
*Shenshi Fang* for rat-hole scrofula.
*Mianliyu* (Eel, 4 liang), wild boar skin, *Qumai* (1 liang), *Badou* (15 seeds), *Banmao* (20 seeds, remove head/feathers/wings, roast), toad caught on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month (1 piece, roast), lard rendered in the twelfth lunar month (5 fen).
Pound the wild boar skin, sieve, and mix with other drugs, pounding again. Add the eel and blend with animal fat, pounding for a thousand strokes. Take two pills the size of wutong seeds on an empty stomach in the morning. If chills and fever occur, stop; if not, administer again at dusk. On the next morning, take three pills, gradually increasing the dose. Strictly avoid hot food, as it may cause severe distress or death. The parasites will exit via urine; collect and observe, potentially numbering in the hundreds. They may also exit via stool. This prescription is effective. Avoid pork and asparagus.
Another prescription:
*Machi Fanshi* (Calcined), *Zhenzhu Fen* (Pearl powder).
Grind and sieve the above two ingredients into powder. Apply thickly to the wound. Cure within three applications.
Another prescription:
*Songzhi* (Pine resin), *Huang* (Sulfur), *Yelangdu* (2 liang each), pig brain (one set), *Bailian* (2 liang).
Render the pig brain to extract juice. Coarsely crush *Yelangdu* and *Bailian*, boil in three sheng of water to obtain one sheng of liquid. Add to the brain juice and decoct to half a sheng. Grind sulfur and pine resin finely, sieve, and mix into the liquid. Wrap in cotton and insert into the wound. Improvement seen in seven days; disease resolved in seventeen days. Highly effective.
*Jiyan Fang* describes nine types of scrofula:
1. **Wild Wolf Scrofula**: Begins on the neck, swelling at the head with a root, starting from the Quepen area, extending up to connect with the ear base. Caused by stagnant Qi from anger/frustration unable to descend. Root in the Lung. Primary herb: *Kongqing*; Assistant: *Shanglu*.
2. **Rat Scrofula**: Begins on the neck, no distinct head/tail, like a mouse kernel, moving up and down. Causes chills, fever, and emaciation. Caused by residual toxins from eating rats. Root in the Stomach. Primary herb: *Ligu*; Assistant: *Zhimu*.
3. **Mole Cricket Scrofula**: Begins on the neck/upper back, shaped like a mole cricket. Swells, ulcerates, and produces red-yellow fluid. Caused by toxins from melons or un-pitted fruits. Root in the Large Intestine. Primary herb: *Renzi*; Assistant: *Jiegeng*.
4. **Bee Scrofula**: Begins on the neck, multiple nodes swelling together, connected and ulcerating. Caused by drinking flowing water containing bee toxins. Root in the Spleen. Primary herb: *Xionghuang*; Assistant: *Huangqin*.
5. **Ant Scrofula**: Begins on the neck. Initially resembles Taiyang syndrome. Caused by toxins from ants in food. Root in the Kidney. Primary herb: [Stone name missing]; Assistant: *Fangfeng*.
6. **Grub Scrofula**: Begins on the neck, no head/tail, like date pits, mostly subcutaneous. Causes chills, fever, heart pain, and fullness. Caused by emotional turmoil (anger/joy/crying). Root in the Heart. Primary herb: *Fanshi*; Assistant: *Baizhu*.
7. **Floating Abscess**: Begins on the neck, size of two fingers. Causes chills, fever, and lethargy. Caused by excessive worry/thought. Root in the Gallbladder. Primary herb: *Dichan*; Assistant: *Gancao*.
8. **Scrofula (Specific Type)**: Begins on the neck, has a root, painful initially, causing chills/fever upon detection. Caused by sweat entering the neck from wet hair after washing. Root in the Kidney. Primary herb: *Cihuang*; Assistant: *Shaoyao*.
9. **Turning Pulse Scrofula**: Begins on the neck, floating in the pulse like a soybean, pulsating violently. Causes fright and aversion to cold/heat. Caused by falling asleep while startled without a pillow. Root in the Small Intestine. Primary herb: *Banmao*; Assistant: *Baizhi*.
Prescription for treating the nine types of scrofula.
*Kongqing* (refined), *Shanglugen*, *Ligu* (roasted), *Zhimu*, *Renzi*, *Jiegeng*, *Xionghuang*, *Huangqin*, [Stone] (calcined), *Fangfeng*, *Fanshi* (calcined until juice gone), *Dichan* (boiled), *Baizhu*, *Gancao* (roasted), *Cihuang*, *Shaoyao*, *Banmao* (remove feet/wings, roast), *Baizhi* (equal parts).
Pound the eighteen ingredients. For specific pathological conditions, adjust proportions accordingly; otherwise, keep equal parts. Sieve finely. Add *Kongqing* last. Take one Dao Gui with vinegar, three times daily. Improvement in 30 days; cure in 50 days; recovery in 70 days. Patients must avoid fish, meat, raw vegetables, peach, plum, sparrow meat, *Haizao*, *Songcai*, dog meat, and raw blood products for 100 days. Dosage: Two soybeans equal one Dao Gui. Children take half; adults take full dose. Those under eight years old should start with a smaller dose. Overdose causes stranguria; reduce dose if stranguria occurs. (From Volume 9).
*Qianjin Fang* asks: What are the nine types of scrofula? Answer: 1. Wild Wolf; 2. Rat; 3. Mole Cricket; 4. Bee; 5. Ant; 6. Grub; 7. Floating Abscess; 8. Scrofula; 9. Turning Pulse. These are called the Nine Types.
Another prescription for Wild Wolf Scrofula: Starts on the neck, head swollen with root, starting at Quepen, extending to ear root. Caused by stagnant Qi from anger. Root in Lung. Primary: *Kongqing*; Assistant: *Shanglu*.
*Kongqing* (ground, 2 fen), Brain (2 fen, dried), *Duhuo* (1 fen), Liver (one set, dried), *Xiong* (0.5 liang), *Nvfucacao* (1 fen), *Huangqin*, *Biejia* (roasted), *Banmao* (remove wings/feet), *Ganjiang*, *Danggui*, *Huixiang*, *Fanshi* (calcined), *Dichan* (1 fen each).
Make into powder, sieve. Take one fangcun bi with wine, three times daily. Stop after 15 days. Avoid raw blood products and amaranth. (Identical to Liu Juanzi and *Gujin Luyan*).
Another prescription for Rat Scrofula: Starts on neck, no head/tail like a mouse, causing chills/fever. Caused by rat toxin residue. Root in Stomach. Primary: *Ligu*; Assistant: *Zhimu*.
*Linglijia* (roasted), *Shanguike* (roasted), *Gancao* (roasted), *Guixin*, *Xionghuang*, *Ganjiang* (equal parts).
Make into powder, sieve. Take one fangcun bi, three times daily. Mix with honey and apply to wound. All heal. Best to moxa first to create a sore, then apply medicine. Avoid *Haizao* and raw green onion. (Identical to Liu Juanzi, *Beiji*, *Gujin Luyan*, *Wenzhong*).
Another prescription for recurrent or non-healing Rat Scrofula with continuous pus/blood discharge.
Use lard not exposed to water. Coarsely crush. Add fresh *Dihuang* so the lard covers the herb. Boil 6-7 times. Strain. Clean wound with ash juice from mulberry leaves to remove foul discharge. Apply *Dihuang* ointment. Change once daily. (Identical to Fan Wang).
Another prescription for Rat Scrofula.
Take a rat swallowed by a snake, burn to powder. Take one fangcun bi, twice daily. Max three doses. Highly effective but rare. Also applicable as topical application. (Identical to Fan Wang).
Another prescription for Rat Scrofula.
One dead rat (medium size), one egg-sized amount of tangled hair.
In the twelfth lunar month, use lard to cover the rat and hair, simmer until completely dissolved. Divide the resulting ointment into two parts. Apply one part topically to the wound slowly. Take the other part with wine. Cure is immediate. The rat parasite will exit the wound. Divine efficacy, secret transmission. (Identical to *Yi*, *Beiji*, *Wenzhong*, *Jiyan*, *Fan Wang*).
Another prescription for Mole Cricket Scrofula: Starts on neck/back, shaped like a mole cricket, swelling/ulceration with red-yellow fluid. Caused by insect/fruit toxin residue. Root in Large Intestine. Primary: *Renzi*; Assistant: *Jiegeng*.
*Guixin*, *Ganjiang*, *Jiegeng*, *Fanshi* (calcined), *Duhuo* (1 fen each), *Fuzi* (1 fen, processed), Pepper (100 grains, sweat removed), *Xiong* (...).
Ten ingredients. Pound and sieve. Mix with 20 jujubes, pound together. Form pills the size of soybeans using sour juice. Take five pills with warm sour juice. (Identical to *Gujin Luyan* and Liu Juanzi).
Another prescription:
Ash from Oak leaves. First boil oak leaves in rice water to extract juice. Wash and dry the lesion. Insert the ash into the wound.
Another prescription for Bee Scrofula: Starts on neck, multiple nodes swelling/ulcerating. Caused by flowing water bee toxin. Root in Spleen. Primary: *Xionghuang*; Assistant: *Huangqin*.
Honeycomb (one set, roasted), *Biejia* (1 fen, roasted), *Huixiang* (1 fen), *Wuzhuyu* (2 fen), Pepper (100 grains, sweat removed), *Ganjiang* (1 fen).
Six ingredients. Pound and sieve into powder. Apply to wound opening, ten times daily, stop after ten days. Avoid amaranth.
Also for early-stage Bee Scrofula: Looks like a peach, itchy. Scratching enlarges it to the size of a chicken egg, hand-over-hand shape.
Roast salt and apply heat compress for three nights. If not cured in four days, it develops into scrofula after 100 days, size 4-5 cun wide, 3 cun broad, with holes containing hundreds of bees. Treatment: Use stone sulfur. Light a candle to melt it, drip into the hole. Within moments, dozens of bees appear in the skin. Cure when bees are gone.
Another prescription for Ant Scrofula: Starts on neck, resembles Taiyang syndrome initially. Caused by ant toxin in diet. Root in Kidney. Primary: [Stone]; Assistant: *Fangfeng*.
*Baizhu* (4 fen), *Zhimu*, *Cihuang*, *Gan Dihuang*, *Duhuo*, *Qingdai*, *Banmao* (remove head/wings/feet, roast), *Baizhi*, *Baizhi* (likely *Baizhi* or similar resin), *Shaoyao*, *Haizao* (or *Haitai*), *Danggui* (1 fen each), Skin (4 fen, roasted), Pepper (100 grains, sweat removed), Peach white bark (1 fen, New Year's Day...).
Fifteen ingredients. Pound and sieve into powder. Take one qian bi, three times daily. (Identical to Liu Juanzi *Gulu Yan*).
Another prescription for Grub Scrofula: Starts on neck, no head/tail, date-pit like, subcutaneous. Causes chills, fever, heart pain, fullness. Caused by emotional crying. Root in Heart. Primary: *Fanshi*; Assistant: *Baizhu*.
