The *Guangji Fang* (Broad Rescue Formulas) presents a formula for external application to cure carbuncles and sores caused by toxic heat.
White horse tooth (calcined until red-hot, then soaked in rice vinegar and calcined again) *Fuzi* (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, prepared lateral root of Aconite) *Xionghuang* (Realgar) *Banxia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma, rhizome of Pinellia).
The above four herbs are each taken in equal parts, ground into powder, and mixed with lard from the twelfth lunar month to form a paste. Apply this paste to cover the swelling one or two times, and it will heal. First, prick the painful area with a needle, then apply the medicine for effectiveness.
Another formula:
Three rotten thorns (those that hook backwards), seven cloves (*Dingxiang*, Caryophylli Flos), burn them together until the smoke stops. Mix with the feces of an infant less than one month old and apply to the swelling. Apply frequently, two or three times; when the root rots, it heals.
Another formula:
Fat from cart axle *Baiyan* (Halitum) *Wujinggen* (Brassicae Rapae Var. Tumida Radix, root of turnip) *Fudimo* (Soot from the bottom of a cauldron) (equal parts).
Grind the above four herbs into powder equally, mix with lard from the twelfth lunar month for application; using vinegar and water is also acceptable.
Additionally, after applying the external seal for carbuncles, it is suitable to regularly take the following powder formula.
Tangle hair (size of a chicken egg) Rotten hooked thorns (two sheng) *Lufengfang* (Vespa Crabro's nest) (one sheng) Snake skin shed (one sheng) Crimson silk (one chi).
Divide the above five ingredients into five portions, wrap each in crimson silk, and bind tightly with hemp rope. Burn over charcoal fire; collect when the smoke is about to cease, do not let it turn into white ash. Grind into powder, mix with wine, and take on an empty stomach one *fangcunbi* (a square-inch measure). Take twice daily and once at night; stop when healed.
Another formula:
*Banxia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma, raw) *Duanshi* (Calcined Alumen) (equal parts).
Grind the above two ingredients into powder and apply to the sore. (All from Volume 5.)
The *Beiji Fang* (Emergency Preparedness Formulas) presents a formula for carbuncles.
*Ganjiang* (Zingiberis Rhizoma, dried ginger) *Hujiao* (Piperis Longi Fructus, long pepper) *Longgu* (Fossil bones) *Banmao* (Mylabris, blister beetle - remove wings and feet and roast) *Zaojiao* (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus, Chinese tamarisk pod - roast, remove skin and seeds).
Grind the above five ingredients in equal parts and sift. Mix with wine and apply as a seal to the sore. Apply once daily.
Another formula:
Prick the head of the sore with a needle, apply hot human feces. Change when dry. Within fifteen applications, pus/toxin will be discharged. Seal the top with sand. If the toxin enters the abdomen, decoct slices of *Gouqigen* (Lycii Radicis Cortex, bark of Lycium root) and drink. This applies if triggered by contact/injury.
Another formula:
*Lufengfang* (Vespa Crabro's nest, fourteen pieces) Hooked thorns (fourteen pieces) *Cangerzi* (Xanthii Fructus, cocklebur fruit, seven pieces) Crimson silk (one inch) Tangle hair (size of a chicken egg) Rotting mugwort stems (fourteen pieces).
Cook the above six ingredients until black, grind into powder, mix with a small amount of *Zhusha* (Cinnabar), and take with wine one *fangcunbi*. Take three times daily. After taking, increase wine intake slightly to induce a mild flush. Dietary restrictions remain normal. This is particularly effective for flesh swellings. (Same as Wenzhong's formula.)
Another formula:
Crush one *Banmao* (Mylabris). Then use a needle to draw a "rice character" (米) pattern on the sore. Apply the medicine to seal it; only then will the root be expelled.
Another formula:
Thirty-two raw yellow soybeans (*Sheng Dayouhuang*) Three crimson silk strips (if unavailable, use five inches of crimson silk) Tangle hair (size of a chicken egg).
Wrap the above three ingredients in crimson silk, bind securely with tangle hair, and burn over charcoal until black smoke nearly ceases. Remove and place in a cold porcelain vessel. Grind into powder. Take one *fangcunbi* with wine on an empty stomach. By dawn until noon, feel limbs relaxed and comfortable, pain subsides, and it heals. If not healed, repeat. Stop when healed. If irritated, pus and blood will discharge. If not irritated, it remains flat for six to seven days. Observe usual dietary taboos.
The *Bixiao Fang* (Must Effective Formulas) presents a formula for carbuncles.
Extract juice from old toilet clear liquid. Burn green bamboo shavings (*Qingzhuru*) to ash.
Grind and mix the above two ingredients, stirring vigorously one hundred times until a paste of appropriate consistency forms. Prick around the edges of the sore thoroughly. First, mix saliva with flour to create a ring around the sore. Gradually fill the center with the medicine. Replace every three to five times. The sore will rot immediately. Pick it open with a needle, extract the root, and it heals. If the root is not out, continue application. Extremely effective.
Another formula:
Seven exposed bee combs (*Fengke*) Crimson silk (palm-sized) Tangle hair (fist-sized).
Burn the above three ingredients separately to ash, grind into powder. Mix with one *sheng* of wine and take in one dose. Stop when healed. If not healed, prepare another dose. (All from Volume 6.)
The *Gujin Lu Yan Fang* (Ancient and Modern Verified Formulas) presents a formula for carbuncles. (From Xu Wang.)
*Dahuang* (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) *Qinjiao* (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, large-leaf gentian root) *Lilu* (Veratri Nigrī Rhizoma, black veratrum rhizome) *Shiliuhuang* (Sulfur, ground) *Sha* (Realgar/Orpiment mixture, each one liang, ground).
Grind the above five ingredients and sift into a powder. Use the tip of a knife to take the powder, mix with cold water, and apply according to the size of the sore. If swelling causes oppression/pain, take *Wuxiang Tang* (Five-Spice Decoction). Also apply flour paste to the swelling; change when dry. Stop when healed. (Another version omits Dahuang; when sealing, prick all four sides, paste with flour-paste paper to keep moist, and change frequently.)
Another formula:
White horse teeth Tangle hair Skulls (each one fen) *Gouqibaipí* (Lycii Cortex, white bark of Lycium root, three fen).
Burn the above four ingredients to ash. Mix with wine and take one *fangcunbi*. If not healed, increase to two *fangcunbi*.
Another formula:
Four hundred hooked thorns Three taels of *Jupi* (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, tangerine peel).
Boil the above two ingredients in three *sheng* of water until half a *sheng* remains. Drink one *ge*. Applying to the swelling is also effective.
Another formula:
Grind magnetite (*Cishi*) into powder. Mix with strong vinegar and apply/seal. The root will be extracted immediately.
Another formula:
On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, take strong dog feces, burn to ash, and apply to the sore. Change frequently. (Note: "Zhuang" [strong] may be read as "Mu" [male].)
Another formula:
Peel fourteen *Badou* (Crotonis Fructus, croton seed). Grind fourteen *Banxia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma) into powder. Mix with *Hanshi Tang* (Cold Food Glucose). Prick the four sides of the sore with a needle, then apply the medicine. The root will be extracted immediately. Fill the wound hole with *Zexie* (Alismatis Rhizoma, alisma rhizome) powder. It will heal. (Presented by Vice Minister Cui Shimu.)
Another formula:
Snake skin shed (four fen, burned to ash) Ash of *Lufengfang* (Vespa Crabro's nest, one fen) Ash of hair (one fen).
Harvest the above three ingredients on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Dry them, mix, and burn to white-gray ash in a new clay bowl. Swallow a date-sized portion with water to induce sweating. If no sweat, take again. Stop when sweating occurs. For seven days, abstain from salt, alcohol, meat, five pungent spices, sexual activity, raw/cold foods, vinegar, and slippery foods. Do not eat chicken meat; consumption makes healing difficult. Snake skin must not have red coloration (toxic); pure white is superior. (This is the method of Gao Tanu, transmitted by Magistrate Xing.)
Another formula:
Tangle hair (size of a chicken egg) Crimson silk (three inches) Seven-seven hooked thorns from eastern branches (white and rotten) Seven-three *Canger* (Xanthii Herba, cocklebur herb).
Burn the above four ingredients together to ash, grind into powder. Take one *fangcunbi* with half a *zhan* of water, two to three times daily. Stop when healed. Avoid wind and heat. Other taboos are the same as before. In case of irritation/contact injury: Deer horn (one square cun), Turtle shell (three square cun), Bee comb (three cun). Divide these three equally, burn to ash, and make into powder. If irritation occurs, take according to the previous formula. Very effective. (All from Volume 30.)
