Source: This condition arises from the accumulation of phlegm-fluids (Tan-Shui) in the chest and epigastrium. When cold or hot pathogenic factors contend with each other, they form solid accumulations that fail to dissipate. Consequently, this causes chest and abdominal fullness and distension, restless breathing, dizziness, blurred vision, and a constant desire to vomit; hence it is termed "Phlegm Solidification" (Tan-Jie-Shi). (From Volume 20)
Jiyan Formula: For treating retained food solidification and phlegm-pi (Tan-Pi) excess syndrome, Geng-Ti San (Melon Tip Powder).
Geng-Di (Cucumeris Fructus Semen, 1 liang) Chi-Xiao-Dou (Vigna umbellata Seed, 4 liang)
Pulverize the above two ingredients. Mix one qian-bi (approx. 3-5g) of the powder into three he (approx. 60ml) of warm water, stir, and ingest. Vomiting should occur shortly thereafter. If vomiting does not occur, administer half a qian-bi with three he of warm water to induce vomiting. If vomiting persists, drink cold water. (Emergency rescue methods are identical; From Volume 4)
Qianjin Formula: Song-Luo Tang (Longan Vine Decoction), for clearing heat and phlegm accumulation in the chest.
Song-Luo (Usnea Diffusa, 2 liang) Wu-Mei (Mume Fructus, 14 pieces) Zhi-Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 14 pieces) Chang-Shan (Dichroae Radix, 3 liang) Gan-Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted, 1 liang)
Cut the above five ingredients. Soak in three sheng (approx. 600ml) of wine overnight. At dawn, add three sheng of water, decoct until two and a half sheng remain. Strain and take in one dose. It may be taken again. Stop when profuse vomiting occurs. Avoid consuming Hai-Zao (Sargassum), Song-Cai (Brassica vegetables), raw Cong (Allium fistulosum), and raw vegetables.
Another Formula: Liao-Ge San (Diaphragm-Lifting Powder), for treating solidified phlegm in the heart region causing chest oppression due to cold.
Gua-Ding (likely referring to Geng-Di/Cucumis melo seed, 28 pieces) Chi-Xiao-Dou (Vigna umbellata Seed, 20 pieces) Ren-Shen (Panax ginseng Root) Gan-Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted, 1 fen each)
Pulverize the above four ingredients. Take one fang-cun-bi (approx. 5-10g) with wine, twice daily. This formula also treats various types of jaundice. Avoid Hai-Zao and Song-Cai. (Both from Volume 18)
Zhouhou Formula: For excessive phlegm in the chest, headache, loss of appetite, and phlegm obstruction caused by alcohol consumption.
Fan-Shi (Alumen, 1 liang)
Decoct the above single ingredient in two sheng (approx. 400ml) of water until one sheng remains. Add half he (approx. 10ml) of honey and take in one dose. If vomiting does not occur shortly, drink a small amount of hot water.
Another Formula
Du-Heng (Asarum heterotropoides Root) (3 liang) Gua-Di (Cucumeris Fructus Semen, 21 pieces) Song-Luo (Usnea Diffusa, 3 liang)
Cut the above three ingredients. Soak in one and two-tenths sheng (approx. 240ml) of a mixture of water and wine for two nights. Strain and take warm, divided into two doses. If the first dose does not induce vomiting, take another dose in the evening. (Identical to Qianjin; From Volume 3)
Qianjin Formula: Zhi-Ge Tang (Diaphragm-Treating Decoction), for treating phlegm in the chest.
Chang-Shan (Dichroae Radix, 3 liang) Gan-Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang) Song-Luo (Usnea Diffusa, 1 liang) Gua-Di (Cucumeris Fructus Semen, 14 pieces)
Take the above four ingredients. Use two and a half sheng of water and two and a half sheng of wine. Decoct until one and a half sheng remain. Initially take seven he (approx. 140ml) to induce vomiting. If vomiting is incomplete, divide the remainder into two doses. Treatment stops when profuse vomiting occurs and symptoms resolve. Afterwards, Ban-Xia Tang (Pinellia Decoction) must be taken, which is located in the preceding "Cold Phlegm" section. Avoid Hai-Zao, Song-Cai, raw Cong, and raw vegetables. (Identical to Beiji and Zhouhou; From Volume 18)
