In the *Bingyuan* (Source of Diseases), cold phlegm refers to a condition where the Stomach Qi is deficient and unable to diffuse and transport water and grain, causing phlegm and fluid to condense and accumulate between the chest and diaphragm. This leads to symptoms such as acid regurgitation, rebellious Qi, cyanosis of the four limbs, and an inability to eat or drink. (From Volume 20)
Fan Wang stated that for phlegm-fluid retention, one should harmonize with warm herbs. This formula treats deficiency-cold in the heart and abdomen, wandering phlegm-Qi rushing up to the chest and hypochondrium causing fullness, inability to eat, vomiting and rebellious Qi, and coldness in the chest. The formula is Banxia Tang (Pinellia Decoction).
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 sheng, washed) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 1 jin) Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 4 liang)
The above three ingredients are cut, boiled in 1 dou of water until 3 sheng remain, and divided into three doses. If there is urgency in the heart or heart pain, add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 4 liang); if there is abdominal pain, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 4 liang). It is suitable for those who are emaciated, elderly, or young. Avoid mutton and maltose.
Another prescription:
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 sheng, washed with hot water) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 1 jin) Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 3 liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang, honey-fried)
The above four ingredients are cut, boiled in 7 sheng of water until 2.5 sheng remain, and divided into three doses. Avoid Haizao (Sargassum), Songcai (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis), mutton, maltose, and raw scallions. (All from Volume 16)
Qianjin Fuling Tang (Poria Decoction from Qianjin Fang) primarily treats phlegm-fullness in the chest and diaphragm.
Fuling (Poria, 4 liang) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 sheng, washed) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 1 jin) Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 8 liang)
The above four ingredients are cut, boiled in 8 sheng of water until 2.5 sheng remain, and divided into four doses. For extreme cold, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 4 liang); for Qi fullness, add Binglang (Arecae Semen, 3-7 pieces). Avoid vinegar, mutton, raw scallions, and maltose. (From Volume 18)
The *Qianjin Yifang* discusses that when phlegm-fluid retention is severe, with frequent vomiting of clear fluid, the root cause is excessive consumption of frozen drinks, leading to entrenched cold in the Spleen and Stomach and weakened Qi, which cannot digest food and drink. When food and drink enter the Stomach, they turn into cold water and are constantly vomited back up. This condition is treated with Chishizhi San (Red Halloysite Powder).
Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum, 3 jin)
The single ingredient is crushed and sifted. Take one fangcun bi (square-inch spoonful) per dose, three times daily, taken with wine or water. Gradually increase the dose to three fangcun bi. After consuming three jin of this medicine, one will never vomit water again nor suffer from diarrhea; it tonifies the Five Zang organs and makes the body robust and strong. There was a person who suffered from phlegm-fluid retention for a long time without improvement from other medicines, but was cured after taking only one jin of this prescription. (From Volume 19)
