Etiology: Phlegm-fluid (Tan-Yin) and water-dampness accumulate between the chest-fu organs and the Bladder. If unresolved over time, they flow into the Spleen and Stomach. The Spleen and Stomach dislike dampness; upon contact with water, they become distended. Distension impairs the digestion of food, leading to abdominal deficiency-fullness, indigestion of water and grain, or occasional vomiting and regurgitation. These are all characteristic symptoms. (From Volume 20)
Guangji Fang treats phlegm accumulation in the heart region, retained water causing vomiting and regurgitation, and inability to ingest food. Qianhu Wan Formula:
Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, each 5 fen), Xuanjinhua (Inulae Flos), Doukourén (Cardamomi Fructus, each 3 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, core removed, each 6 fen), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, honey-fried), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, each 4 fen).
The above nine ingredients are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 20 pills on an empty stomach with wine, gradually increasing to 30 pills, twice daily. Stop if diarrhea occurs. Avoid peaches, plums, sparrow meat, seaweed, songcai (Brassicaceae vegetables), hot noodles, roasted meat, fish, garlic, sticky foods, and cold/raw items.
Another formula treats phlegm accumulation in the chest and heart, qi obstruction, vomiting, regurgitation, and inability to eat.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, each 6 fen), Fuling (Poria, 10 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, core removed), Jisu (Elsholtziae Herba, each 8 fen), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 20 fen), Binglangren (Arecae Semen, 4 fen, add when decoction is complete).
The above eight ingredients are cut, boiled in 8 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Strain and discard the dregs. Divide into three warm doses. Administer each dose at intervals equivalent to walking for seven to eight li. If not cured, administer another course after three days. Discontinue when bowel movements become free. Avoid vinegar, cold/raw items, greasy foods, and sticky foods. (All from Volume 1)
Qianjin Fang treats phlegm-fluid, indigestion, and dry retching. Tang Decoction:
Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, remove tip and skin), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, honey-fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, each 3 liang), Fuling (Poria), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, each 4 liang), Xuanjinhua (Inulae Flos), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, each 2 liang), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 4 liang, washed).

The above nine ingredients are cut, boiled in 7 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Strain and add ginger juice, boiling further to obtain 4.5 sheng. Divide into three doses. Three courses are ideal. If intending to take Dasan or various Wushi Pills, this formula must be taken first, along with Huang Wan-type preparations, for optimal effect. Gujin Luyan treats phlegm-fluid in the chest-diaphragm. Food eaten a day prior is vomited up undigested, appearing as it did when ingested.
