Ji Yan Fang (Collected Verified Prescriptions) discusses: If there is pain in the chest accompanied by shortness of breath, one should quickly enter a dark place, cover the left eye with the hand, and look only with the right eye. If light can be seen, it indicates a carbuncle (Jie Yong) forming in the chest; if light cannot be seen, it indicates that Biao Ju (a type of severe carbuncle or gangrene) is erupting from within, which may lead to vomiting of pus and blood. This is a disease that, if untreated, requires covering the exuding pus and blood with ash; otherwise, the discharge will contaminate others. Additionally, if foul-smelling bloody fluid flows from between the teeth, this is also a sign of Biao Ju onset.
Qian Jin Fang (Essential Prescriptions for Worth a Thousand Gold) on Biao Ju states: Biao Ju manifests as sudden nodules in the flesh, resembling bean grains. Small ones are like millet seeds, while severe cases are as large as plums or peaches. The color may be red, black, green, or white. If they do not ulcerate or necrose, they are referred to as "Xi" (dark/black); if they are movable and form distinct shapes, they are referred to as "Ji".
Liu Juanzi's Sheep Marrow Ointment for treating spreading Biao Ju.
Sheep Marrow (2 liang), Rhubarb (Da Huang), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, honey-fried), Lead Carbonate (Hu Fen) (each 2 liang).
The above four ingredients are coarsely crushed. Combine with 2.5 sheng of lard and simmer over a low fire using the "three ups and three downs" method (heating, removing from heat, repeating three times). Strain out the dregs and apply externally, 4-5 times daily. (Shen Shi Fang notes this formula also treats red-black ulcerated sores; see Volume 5).
Qian Jin Fang formula for Biao Ju occurring on hands, feet, shoulders, and back, presenting as clustered grain-like protrusions, white in color, exuding fluid when scraped, but prone to recurrence.
Cistanche (Huang Cong, likely typo for Huang Jing or similar, context implies root herb) (6 fen), Winter Flower (Kuan Dong Hua), Cimicifuga (Sheng Ma), Aconite Root (Fu Zi, processed) (1 fen), Sophora Root (Ku Shen), Adzuki Bean (Chi Xiao Dou) (each 1 fen).
The above six ingredients are powdered and sieved. Take half a qian bi with wine, gradually increasing to one qian bi, taken three times daily. (Fan Wang's formula lacks Ku Shen but includes Chi Xiao Dou).
Another prescription:
White Tiger Excrement mixed with Horse Urine, dried and burned to ash, applied as powder to the lesion. (Same as Qian Jin Yi Fang).
Another prescription:
Lead Carbonate (Hu Fen), Aquilaria Wood (Qing Mu Xiang), Dragon Bone (Long Gu), Talcum (Hua Shi) (each 2 liang).
The above four ingredients are powdered and sieved. Mix with 1 sheng of rice flour and apply lightly to the lesion, 4-5 times daily.
Another prescription:
Dust from the stove room, Soot from the chimney, Soil from the bottom of the cooking pot (each 1 sheng).
The above three ingredients are ground together until uniform. Boil in 10 dou of clear water for three boils. Use the decoction to wash the sore, 2-3 times daily.
Generally, Biao Ju appearing on hands, feet, shoulders, and back presents suddenly as clustered nodules resembling adzuki beans. Puncturing them yields fluid. Treatment follows.
Peel off the skin of the sore, clean with warm rice-washing water, and apply a mixture of swallow nests and feces from a hundred-day-old male infant.
Another prescription:
Roast turnip seeds until cooked, crush thoroughly, wrap in cotton cloth, and apply. Do not stop treatment. (Wen Zhong Bei Ji Fu Hou is identical).
Another prescription:
Roast hemp seeds, grind into powder, and rub onto the area, 5-6 times daily.
Another prescription:
Apply a paste made of wheat flour and wine.
Another prescription:
Three crucian carp (approx. 3 cun long), a clump of tangled hair the size of an egg, and 1 jin of lard. Fry together to make an ointment and apply.
Another secret recipe for treating Biao Ju, not transmitted in the world, possessing divine efficacy.
Belamcanda Rhizome (She Gan), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, honey-fried), Cimicifuga (Sheng Ma), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhi Shi, honey-fried) (each 2 liang), Rhubarb (Da Huang) (10 fen), Musk (She Xiang, 2 fen, finely ground), Dried Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang) (2 liang), Rhinoceros Horn (Xi Jiao, 6 fen, shaved), Peucedanum Root (Qian Hu) (3 liang; original text notes 3 fen).
The above nine ingredients are cut. Decoct in 9 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. Stop when cured; no fixed limit on dosage. (Identical to Qian Jin Yi Fang and Shen Shi Fang; Shen Shi Fang adds Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin) 10 fen, rest same).
Another formula: Biao Ju Lou Lu Tang.
Euphorbia Lousewort Root (Lou Lu), Ampelopsis Radix (Bai Lian), Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin), Ephedra Stem (Ma Huang, nodes removed), Cynanchum Atratum Root (Bai Wei), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhi Shi, honey-fried), Cimicifuga (Sheng Ma), Peony Root (Shao Yao), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, honey-fried) (each 2 liang), Rhubarb (Da Huang) (3 liang).
The above ten ingredients are cut. Decoct in 10 dou of water to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. If other herbs are unavailable, using Rhubarb alone to purge is effective. (Zhang Wen Zhong Bei Ji and Qian Jin Yi Fang are identical).
Another formula: Sheng Ma Gao (Cimicifuga Ointment).
Cimicifuga (Sheng Ma), Cynanchum Atratum Root (Bai Wei), Euphorbia Lousewort Root (Lou Lu), Forsythia Fruit (Lian Qiao), Mirabilite (Mang Xiao) (each 2 liang), Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin), Snake Herb (She Xian), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhi Shi, honey-fried) (each 2 liang), Gardenia Seed (Zhi Zi Ren) (20 seeds), Polygonum Multiflorum Vine (Suo Yang, likely typo for Suo Luo/Dioscorea or similar vine, text says Suo Luo) (4 liang).
The above ten ingredients are cut and pounded fine. Soak in 3 sheng of water for half a day. Then fry in 5 sheng of lard until the water evaporates. Strain out dregs. Apply to various Dan Du (erysipelas/toxic swelling) and hot sores/swellings. Change application three times daily.
Sheng Ma Tang (Cimicifuga Decoction).
Cimicifuga (Sheng Ma), Euphorbia Lousewort Root (Lou Lu), Mirabilite (Mang Xiao) (each 2 liang), Gardenia (Zhi Zi) (20 seeds), Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin) (3 liang).
The above five ingredients are cut. Combine with 10 dou of water and 5 liang of Suo Luo. Decoct to obtain 7 sheng. Cool and apply wet compresses to areas of Dan Du swelling, keeping it constantly moist. Internally, taking Lou Lu Tang is highly recommended.
Another formula for Biao Ju spreading with excessive fluid, enlarging daily: Hu Fen San (Lead Carbonate Powder).
Lead Carbonate (Hu Fen, 2 fen, roasted), Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian) (3 fen), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, honey-fried) (3 fen), Ru (likely referring to a resin or specific herb, text says Ru) (2 fen).
The above four ingredients are powdered and sieved. Dust onto the sore, 3 times daily. (Identical to Qian Jin Yi Fang, Wen Zhong Bei Ji, Shen Shi Fang; all from Volume 23).
