The *Guangji* formula treats abdominal Qi Pi (abdominal masses due to Qi stagnation) that are hard. The area under the two hypochondria and around the umbilicus is hard as stone, painful upon palpation. There is abdominal distension, inability to eat, mental restlessness, coughing, and rebellious Qi. The condition persists for years without healing.
Biejia Wan (Turtle Shell Pill) Formula:
Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 8 fen, processed with heat) Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, 5 fen) Xiongqiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 4 fen) Fangkui (Adenophorae Radix, 4 fen) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 6 fen) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 4 fen) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 4 fen) Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 4 fen) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 4 fen) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 4 fen, processed) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 4 fen, processed with heat) Badou (Crotonis Fructus, 14 seeds)
Crush and sieve the above twelve herbs. Mix with honey to form pills. Take on an empty stomach in the early morning with warm wine. Start with four pills the size of a loquat seed, taken three times a day. Gradually increase the dose until mild diarrhea occurs one or two times, which serves as the limit. Avoid raw green onions and amaranth. (From Volume II)
The *Bixiao* formula treats abdominal distension and hard masses like stone that persist for years without improvement.
Take branches from the southeast direction of the white poplar tree (*Populus alba*), remove the rough bark, finely chop five sheng, and stir-fry until yellow. Pour five sheng of wine over the herbs to extract the essence. Place the dregs in a silk bag and return them to the wine. Seal tightly and let stand for two nights. Take one he each time, twice a day. (From Volume III)
The *Jiyan* formula treats various conditions of undigested food.
Take the residue from the kitchen stove (Zao Xin Tu / Hearth Earth), frequently burn it into powder, and take one fangcun bi (a measure equivalent to a square inch) with wine. It induces vomiting of retained food, leading to recovery. (Zhang Wenzhong's *Beiji* formula is identical. Lu Guanglu stated that someone suffered from indigestion after eating peaches. Since no peaches were available, they found dried peaches in the woods, burned them, and took the powder, immediately vomiting out the pathogen and recovering. The *Qianjin Fang* also records this method. From Volume VI)
The *Beiji* formula treats fish and raw meat stuck in the chest and diaphragm, causing indigestion, inability to vomit, and often forming Zheng Ji (masses).
Piaoxiao (Natrii Sulfas, approximately half the size of a chicken egg) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang)
Boil the above two herbs in two sheng of wine until reduced to one sheng. Strain and consume entirely. Digestion will be resolved immediately. If Piaoxiao is unavailable, Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) or Xiaoshi (Nitrums) can be used as substitutes. (Identical to *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*)
Additionally, for retained food not digesting and difficult defecation, there is the Lizhong Wan formula:
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 8 liang) Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen) Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, peeled and de-seeded) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 4 liang each)
Crush and sieve the above four herbs. Mix with honey to form pills the size of loquat seeds. Take seven pills, three times a day. If ineffective, gradually increase to ten pills. (Yao Shengyuan's formula and others from Volume III)
The *Gujin Luyan* formula treats sudden indigestion that threatens to become Zheng Ji, using Aijian Wan (Mugwort Decoction Pills):
Bai'ai (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, one bundle) Yiyigen (Coicis Radix, one handful)
Boil the above two herbs together to obtain a decoction, reduce it until it resembles maltose syrup. Take half a sheng per dose. It induces pruritus and vomiting of retained food. The effect is miraculous. (From Volume X)
