Commentary: The classics state that there are pulses of Yin Qiao and Yang Qiao, and pulses of Yin Bo and Yang Bo; these occur in the positions of the Three Yin meridians. The pulse of the foot Taiyin belongs to the Spleen meridian. The Spleen resides in the Central Region (Zhongzhou), containing and storing Yang Qi. If a person is in a state of harmony, the Spleen can circulate Yang Qi and warm the Three Yin meridians. When the Three Yin meridians are warm, the feet feel comfortable. If the Spleen is deficient and cannot contain Yang Qi, Earth Qi (Yin-Cold) gradually leaks out, Yang Qi floats upward causing blockage in the Three Yin meridians, and the feet become cold. Some individuals have heels that are loose or stiff, lacking sensation, which is compounded by insufficiency of Kidney and Liver Qi, creating a deficiency in the Shaoyin and Jueyin meridians. Therefore, the feet lose their function of bearing and transporting, and cannot exhibit agility; this is "Yin Bo affecting Yang," arising from visceral deficiency. Yang Qi is injured and chaotic, while Yin Qi cannot regulate alone, leading to fever, trismus (lockjaw), and heat in the axillae that makes them intolerable to touch. This is caused by the excess of the Three Yang meridians. Moreover, taking mineral drugs increases internal heat, and improper diet exacerbates the condition. Pathogens in the Yin aspect manifest as rashes. One may externally warm the feet and internally tonify Yang Qi in the Three Yin meridians for recovery.
Formula for treating sudden coldness in both feet.
Place vinegar slurry in a basin, warm it, and soak the feet until cured.
Another formula for treating trismus with Qi rebellion approaching exhaustion.
Brassica rapa var. nipposinica seeds (2 sheng), Poria (3 liang), Polygonum tinctorium seeds, Ginseng, Rhizoma Coptidis (Note: Text says 'Qi', likely referring to 荠苨 Rhizoma Adenophorae or similar, but literal translation used here as per text constraint, though context implies medicinal herb), Prepared Licorice Root, Scutellaria Root, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (1 liang each).
Cut the above eight herbs. Decoct the Brassica rapa var. nipposinica seeds in 2 dou of water to obtain 8 sheng of liquid. Remove the dregs, add the remaining herbs, and decoct further. Divide into doses. If trismus occurs, pry open the mouth with an instrument and administer the medicine; the patient will recover.
Another formula for treating heat in both axillae that is intolerable.
Talcum (1 jin), Halloysitum Rubrum (3 jin), Mirabilite (1 jin).
Pulverize the above three substances. Take one chi length of silk cloth, divide it into bags, fill with the powder, tie the mouths, and alternately clamp between the axillae without removing, until coolness is achieved.
Commentary: People of the five elemental constitutions have distinct natures. Those of the Earth constitution have prominent bones and clear Qi; those of the Water constitution have thin bodies and long Qi; those of the Wood constitution have tendons that respond rapidly. Generally, people of the Earth and Fire constitutions are irritable with high Qi, and being obese, they possess excessive Fire Qi. If they take mineral drugs, it adds fire to flame, leading to decline when things reach extremity, a condition named "self-burning." If one feels disaster striking, one should quickly use purgation. For those with chronic diseases who take mineral drugs, the pathogenic Qi has been strong for a long time, and the heat of the minerals is superficial, unable to break the disease but only increasing heat and harming the body. If the heat is not severe, quick purgation is also suitable. For other constitutions taking these drugs, if symptoms arise, simply administering mineral-drug antidotes will naturally lead to recovery. Do not seek extreme cold remedies for slight heat, for building a mountain nine ren high fails if one basket of earth is missing. Medicine lies in understanding. Practice this carefully. (Min Yi et al. note: The discussion on five constitutions lacks Metal; no other editions exist for collation, so it is currently omitted.)
Beehive Drink, a formula to resolve residual effects of mineral drugs.
Wild Bee's Nest (3 liang).
Decoct the single herb in 3 sheng of water to obtain 1 sheng. Remove dregs and take in one dose. If not cured, take again after three to five days. If feeling hot and stifled, take the following formula. (Qianjin Yifang treats distressing fever from mineral drugs suitable for purging minerals: Wild Bee's Nest 1 sheng, cut. Decoct in 2 sheng of water to obtain 1 sheng. Take 5-6 he per dose, three times daily. Minerals pass through urine like fine sand. Stop when complete; no dietary restrictions.)
Another formula for purging minerals.
Pueraria Root, Arnebia Root (8 liang each), Rhinoceros Horn (12 liang, shaved), Wild Bee's Nest (10 liang, prepared), Mirabilite, Rhubarb (2 liang each), Rhizoma Adenophorae, Ginseng (7 liang each), Scrophularia Root, Prepared Licorice Root, Silver Shavings (finely ground), Pig Fat (12 liang, from December).
Soak the above twelve herbs in non-grain alcohol for ten days. Use 1 sheng of alcohol to decoct the pig fat to obtain 3 liang of fat. Mix with silver shavings and grind, then add to the medicinal mixture. Take daily... [Text fragment].
Another formula for unbearable scattered mineral toxicity requiring purgation.
Fatty Pork (5 jin), White Part of Green Onion, Allium macrostemon Bulb (0.5 jin each).
Pound and grind the above three ingredients together. Steam in a vessel until cooked. Eat in the morning until finished.
Another treatment for those who have taken milk stones etc., but constantly suffer from cold. This is because laxative decoctions were not taken first before taking stones. Since the disease and medicine are separated, the Dan-Shi (mineral drug) power does not circulate, hence the persistent cold. One should purge according to this method; the cold will heal, and the mineral power will circulate.
Ginseng, Poria, Rehmannia Root (Dried), Angelica Sinensis, Platycodon Root, Prepared Licorice Root, Peony Root (2 liang each), Rhubarb (4 liang).
Cut the above eight herbs. Decoct in 3 sheng of water to obtain 1.2 sheng. Remove dregs and divide into doses.
