Discourse states: Generally, when a person is in Yang areas, the exterior is affected; when in Yin areas, the interior is damaged. This implies that it is not purely Yin residing below, nor purely Yang residing above. It is necessary for Yin and Yang to be unobstructed. When Yin and Yang are unobstructed and balanced, the Qi of the Five Zang organs will not be deficient. If the Qi of the Five Zang organs is not deficient, the person will not fall ill. Consider those who take mineral drugs (Shi Yao): they mostly do so due to Yin deficiency. If their regulation is overly warm, the meridians and collaterals become congested and overflow. Or, encountering Yang times (seasons/conditions), these symptoms may manifest. Originally, Yang Qi naturally floats and rises. The power of mineral drugs further hides Yang Qi. With both pathogenic Yang and ruling Yang steaming together, they scorch the Lung and Liver, thus causing thirst. Alternatively, if there is excess in the Zang and deficiency in the Fu, leading to back carbuncles, thirst also occurs; this is not solely caused by the dual Yang. Furthermore, the Lung belongs to Geng-Xin Metal. Geng-Xin Metal fears Fire. Fire informs its child [Note: Textual logic varies, often implying Fire melts Metal or affects Water via Earth, here linked to Kidney]. Its child is the Kidney. The Kidney belongs to Ren-Gui Water. Although the child (Kidney Water) inherently dislikes cold, although Yang obtains water and temporarily becomes cold, the water flows secretly downwards. When pathogenic water and normal water are sufficient, it floods like heavy rain, leading to thirst.
