*Su Nv Jing*. Huangdi asked Sunü: "Men receive Qi, with Yin and Yang balanced equally. However, in sexual activity, Yang is often damaged first, leading to illness. The eyes and ears originate from what one desires." (Note: The original text contains significant corruption and missing characters here, specifically regarding "impotence," "premature death," "blindness," "deafness," "aphasia," "loss of spirit," "forgetfulness," "anxiety," "sudden fear," "grief," etc., which are skipped for coherence).
(Continuing from the discussion on taboos) Engaging in intercourse after a full meal or drinking, before physical strength has recovered, causes the Qi of the Tai Cang (Stomach) to float and scatter. This may trigger manic episodes and depletion of vitality. (Note: The original text is severely corrupted here, skipping phrases like "strong," "Yang," "lack of propriety," "opening of pores," "pain in the penis," "damage to muscles and organs," "blocked ears," "blurred vision," "fear," "trembling," etc.).
Huangdi asked Gaoyang Fu: "I know that Sunü understands the deficiency and excess of meridians and zang-fu organs. Men suffer from the Five Excesses and Seven Injuries; women suffer from Yin-Yang blockage, leukorrhea (red and white discharge), or infertility. Since men's Qi is balanced between Yin and Yang, what is the cause of their illnesses? I wish to ask clearly, please explain in detail." Gaoyang Fu replied: "Your question is profound."
In the three months of Spring, use Kidney-Nourishing Pills. It treats kidney deficiency in men causing difficulty in bending and stretching, coldness in the knee caps, frequent heat and itching, occasional edema, difficulty walking, wind affecting the eyes causing tearing, blurred distant vision, coughing with rebellious Qi, body weakness, sallow complexion, and limb stiffness.
Formula ingredients: Poria (Fuling) 4 fen (if digestion is poor, add 3 fen and double the amount); Acorus (Changpu) 4 fen (if deaf, add 3 fen and double the amount); Cornus (Shanzhuyue) 4 fen (if body itches, add 3 fen and double the amount); Trichosanthes Root (Gualougen) 4 fen (if heat and thirst, add 3 fen and double the amount); Dodder Seed (Tusizi) 4 fen (if weakness and diarrhea, add 2 fen and double the amount); Achyranthes Root (Niuxi) 4 fen (if joint obstruction, double the amount); Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng) 4 fen (if wind pathogen, add 3 fen and double the amount); Dioscorea Rhizome (Shuyu) 4 fen (if damp-itch in the yin region, add 3 fen and double the amount); Teasel Root (Xuduan) 4 fen (if hemorrhoids, double the amount); Cnidium Fruit (Shechuangzi) 4 fen (if weakness, add 3 fen and double the amount); Aconitum Lateral Root Preparatum (Tianxiong) 4 fen (processed; if body pain, double the amount); Eucommia Bark (Duzhong) 4 fen (if impotence and lower back pain, double the amount). The above twenty herbs are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take three pills before meals, three times daily. If ineffective, gradually increase the dose until efficacy is achieved. Powder form can also be taken.
Huangdi asked again: "What formula should be used in the three months of Summer? Please explain in detail." Gaoyang Fu replied: "Use Kidney-Nourishing Poria Pills. It treats internal deficiency in men, inability to eat or drink, and abdominal cold pain."
Formula ingredients: Poria (Fuling) 2 liang (if food stagnation, double the amount); Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi) 2 liang (processed; if wind pathogen, add 3 fen and double the amount); Cornus (Shanzhuyue) 3 liang (if body itches, add 3 fen and double the amount); Eucommia Bark (Duzhong) 2 liang (if lower back pain, double the amount); Dioscorea Rhizome (Shuyu) 3 liang (if head wind, double the amount); Dendrobium Stem (Shihu) 2 liang (if damp-itch in the yin region, add 3 fen and double the amount). The above twelve herbs are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take seven pills before meals, twice daily. Avoid raw green onions, raw vegetables, pork, cold water, strong vinegar, and coriander.
Huangdi asked again: "I have heard of the effective treatments for Spring and Summer. What formula should be used in the three months of Autumn?" Gaoyang Fu replied: "Use Kidney-Nourishing Poria Pills. It treats kidney deficiency and cold in men, internal injury to the five zang organs, and suffering from wind-cold. It causes body damp-itch, unsteady gait, lack of self-awareness, loss of taste in food and drink, blurred vision, heavy body, drooling, anal incontinence, nocturnal emission during dreams, hematuria, dribbling urine, damp-itch in the genital area, palpitations, hypogastric tension, soreness and pain in the four limbs, rapid breathing, edema, rebellious Qi in the chest and hypochondrium. Physicians may fail to recognize this and apply incorrect treatments. The formula is as follows:"
Formula ingredients: Poria (Fuling) 3 liang; Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng) 2 liang; Cassia Twig (Guixin) 2 liang; Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu) 2 liang; Asarum Root (Xixin) 2 liang; Cornus (Shanzhuyue) 2 liang; Dioscorea Rhizome (Shuyu) 2 liang; Alisma Tuber (Zexie) 2 liang; White Peony Root (Shaoyao) 2 liang; Salvia Root (Danshen) 2 liang; Astragalus Root (Huangqi) 2 liang; Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen) 2 liang; Ginseng Radix (Renshen) 2 liang; Sophora Root (Kushen) 2 liang. The above twenty-two herbs are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take five pills before meals, washed down with wine at the time of administration. Avoid vinegar products, raw green onions, peaches, plums, sparrow meat, raw vegetables, pork, and Xuyi (Myrobalan).
Huangdi asked again: "There are good formulas for Spring, Summer, and Autumn. What formula should be used in the three months of Winter?" Gaoyang Fu replied: "Use Life-Extending Poria Pills. It treats kidney qi deficiency in men, pulling pain in the waist and spine, interior-exterior discomfort, weakness in the calves and shins, shortness of breath, dry mouth, and need to strengthen strength (textual ambiguity, likely referring to the need for potent tonification), drooling, and anal incontinence."
Formula ingredients: Poria (Fuling) 2 liang; Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu) 2 liang; Alisma Tuber (Zexie) 2 liang; Mumen (Mumen, likely a specific herb or typo for another root) 2 liang; Cassia Twig (Guixin) 2 liang; Oyster Shell (Muli) 2 liang (calcined); Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi) 2 liang; Dioscorea Rhizome (Shuyu) 2 liang; Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi) 2 liang; Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) 2 liang; Cornus (Shanzhuyue) 2 liang; Licorice Root (Gancao) 2 liang (honey-fried); Asparagus Tuber (Tianmendong) 2 liang. The above twenty herbs are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take five pills before meals, taken with wine. Avoid seaweed, Chinese cabbage, carp, raw green onions, pork, and vinegar.
Huangdi asked again: "I have heard of the medicines for the four seasons. Can these medicines be taken throughout all seasons?" Gaoyang Fu replied: "There is a powder for the four seasons named Poria Powder. It does not avoid cold or heat; long-term consumption can extend life and longevity, making the old vigorous again. The formula is as follows:"
Formula ingredients: Poria (Fuling); Stalactite (Zhongru, ground); Cloud Mother Powder (Yunmufen); Dendrobium Stem (Shihu); Acorus (Changpu); Biota Seed (Baiziren); Dodder Seed (Tusizi); Teasel Root (Xuduan); Eucommia Bark (Duzhong); Asparagus Tuber (Tianmendong, remove heart); Achyranthes Root (Niuxi); Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi); Alisma Tuber (Zexie); Polygala Root (Yuanzhi, remove heart); Chrysanthemum Flower (Ganjuhua); Cnidium Fruit (Shechuangzi); Dioscorea Rhizome (Shuyu); Cornus (Shanzhuyue); Aconitum Lateral Root Preparatum (Tianxiong, processed); Pyrosia Leaf (Shiwei, remove hairs); Dried Ginger (Ganjiang). The above twenty-two herbs are crushed and sifted into a powder. Take one cun bi (a measure of volume) with wine, twice daily. Efficacy appears in twenty days, diseases are cured in thirty days, and after one hundred days, the body becomes healthy and strong. Long-term consumption allows eighty or ninety-year-old men to regain the vigor of youths. Avoid vinegar products, mutton, maltose, carp, pork, and Xuyi.
Gaoyang Fu said: "All classic formulas were created by immortals. Their use in treating diseases has been fully discussed. As described, since the beginning of creation, there is no disease that cannot be treated and no life that cannot be saved." (All extracted from *Gujin Luyan*, Volume 25).
