*Duǎnjù* (Short Treatise) records: Treating pain on one side of the hypochondrium accompanied by fever, with a tight and string-taut pulse (Jǐn Xián Mài), this is caused by Cold pathogen. It should be treated with warm purgatives. Dàhuáng Fùzǐ Tāng (Rhubarb and Aconite Decoction).
Dàhuáng (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (3 liǎng), Fùzǐ (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (3 pieces, prepared), Xìxīn (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (2 liǎng).
The above three herbs are sliced, boiled in 5 shēng of water to obtain 2 shēng of decoction, divided into three doses. For robust individuals, boil to obtain 3.5 shēng, divided into three doses; administer each dose at intervals corresponding to walking for four or five lǐ. Avoid pork, cold water, and raw vegetables. (Same as Zhang Zhongjing's text)
Additionally, Bànxià Fúlíng Tāng (Pinellia and Poria Decoction)
Treats phlegm-fluid, Cold qi, and Cold pathogen in the chest, diaphragm, heart, and abdomen; feeling of fluid agitation in the epigastrium (Xīnxià Wāngyáng); sensation of hunger without desire to eat mixed with irritability (Cáofán); excessive bowel sounds and salivation; spontaneous flow of clear saliva from the mouth; stiffness, distension, and pain in the hypochondrium leading to anorexia. These are all due to weak Stomach qi (Wèiqì) and invasion by Cold. The pulse is preferably deep (Chén), string-taut (Xián), fine (Xì), and slow (Chí); this formula governs all such cases.
Bànxià (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) (5 liǎng, washed), Shēngjiāng (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (5 liǎng), Fúlíng (Poria), Xuánfūhuā (Inulae Flos), Chénjúpí (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Réncshēn (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Jiégěng (Platycodonis Radix), Sháoyào (Paeoniae Radix Alba seu Rubra).
The above ten herbs are sliced, boiled in 9 shēng of water to obtain 3 shēng of decoction, divided into three doses. To promote bowel movement, add Dàhuáng; for mild regulation, use Gāndìhuáng (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata); if the patient previously preferred drinking water but suffered from diarrhea, add Báizhú (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 3 liǎng and remove Xuánfūhuā; if stool is irregular, add Dàhuáng and Gāndìhuáng, each 3 liǎng. Avoid mutton, maltose (Yítáng), vinegar products, raw scallions, pork, Sǒnghài (Sargassum), and Báisài (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis). (Same as *Jíyàn*, from Volume I)
*Guǎngjì* (Broad Relief) records: Treating distension and fullness of Qi in the chest and diaphragm, obstruction in the epigastrium during eating, deficiency-heat, painful irritation of hands and feet, gradual emaciation and inability to eat, and weakness of the four limbs. Zhīshí Wán (Immature Bitter Orange Pill).
Zhīshí (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (6 fēn), Xījiǎo (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Qiánhú (Peucedani Radix), Qīngmùxiāng (Daemonorops Spatha / Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum - note: Qingmuxiang historically refers to Daemonorops spatha or similar aromatic wood, often substituted), Màiméndōng (Ophiopogonis Radix, core removed, 8 fēn), Chì Fúlíng (Poria with red bark, 8 fēn), Kǔshēn (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) (6 fēn), Sháoyào (Paeoniae Radix Alba seu Rubra) (6 fēn).
The above eight herbs are crushed, sifted into powder, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of white mustard seeds. Take 20 pills with water on an empty stomach, gradually increasing to 30 pills, twice daily. Do not induce diarrhea. Avoid raw vegetables, hot noodles, greasy foods, roasted meat, vinegar, and garlic.
Additionally, treating fullness and blockage in the chest and diaphragm, pulling pain in the heart and back, and wandering Qi causing chest oppression. It is suitable to take this Cháihú Tāng (Bupleurum Decoction).
Cháihú (Bupleuri Radix) (6 fēn), Dāngguī (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (6 fēn), Qīngmùxiāng (Daemonorops Spatha / Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) (6 fēn), Xījiǎo (Rhinocerotis Cornu, shaved, 6 fēn), Bīngláng (Arecae Semen) (10 pieces), Gāncǎo (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared, 2 fēn).
The above six herbs are sliced, boiled in 7 shēng of water to obtain 2.5 shēng of decoction, strained to remove dregs, and Musk (Shéxiāng) powder is added. Divide into three warm doses. Administer at intervals corresponding to walking for four or five lǐ. Stop when slight laxation occurs. Avoid Sǒnghài (Sargassum), Báisài (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis), raw vegetables, hot noodles, buckwheat, pork, fish, and garlic.
Additionally, treating latent Cold Qi trapped in the chest and diaphragm failing to descend, causing anorexia, and fullness below the umbilicus. Cháihú Tāng (Bupleurum Decoction).
Cháihú (Bupleuri Radix) (3 liǎng), Zhīshí (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (3 liǎng), Shēngjiāng (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (3 liǎng), Báizhú (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (3 liǎng), Gāncǎo (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared, 1 liǎng), Bīngláng (Arecae Semen) (7 pieces).
The above six herbs are sliced, boiled in 6 shēng of water to obtain 2 shēng of decoction, strained to remove dregs, and divided into two warm doses. Administer each dose at intervals corresponding to walking for six or seven lǐ. For frail individuals, slight laxation is the goal. Prohibit cold/raw foods, garlic, fishy/meaty items, Sǒnghài (Sargassum), Báisài (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis), peaches, plums, and quail meat. (All from Volume I)
