The *Gujin Luyàn* (Ancient and Modern Records of Verification) provides a prescription for treating venom from Hu snakes (vipers).
Crush the roots of Malva verticillata (Okra root) and apply them topically to the wound.
The *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up My Sleeve) offers prescriptions for human bites/stings by Hu snakes and other various snakes.
Apply head scurf (dandruff/scalp secretions) to the sore. (This method is identical to that in Zhang Wenzhong's *Beiji* [Emergency Prescriptions].)
Another prescription:
Rub two knives together in water for a long time, drink the resulting liquid, and the pain will cease immediately. (Identical to *Beiji* and Zhang Wenzhong's formula.)
Another prescription:
Crush [missing character] grass and apply it topically; it cures instantly with divine efficacy.
The *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Proven Prescriptions) provides a prescription for treating bites from various snakes.
Take Amaranthus tricolor (Purple Amaranth), crush it, and drink one sheng (approx. 200ml) of the juice. Mix the dregs with a small amount of water and apply the paste to the wound. Alternatively, crush winter melon roots and apply them topically. (Identical to *Zhouhou* and *Qianjin* [Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold].)
Another prescription:
Take leaves of *Changsi* (likely *Clerodendrum cyrtophyllum* or similar local herb), crush to extract juice, drink one sheng, and apply the dregs to the wound. Additionally, apply leaves of *Guimu* (Phyllanthus urinaria or similar) to relieve pain. (*Zhouhou* records crushing *Guizhencao* [Ageratum conyzoides] for topical application. Both sources are from Volume 9.)
Zhang Wenzhong’s prescriptions for treating bites from various snakes:
Chew dried ginger and apply it to the wound; recovery occurs within three or four applications. Alternatively, boil a decoction of Evodia rutaecarpa (Wuzhuyu) and soak the wound in it for immediate recovery. (Identical to *Jiyan*.)
Another prescription:
Crush fresh Polygonum species (Shengliao), squeeze out the juice, drink it, and apply a small amount of the dregs to the wound. Additionally, apply indigo dye (Lanqing).
Another prescription:
Crush garlic and apply it to the site. Adding a small amount of salted fermented soybeans (Yanchi) and crushing them together yields superior results. (Identical to *Beiji*, *Jiyan*, and *Gujin Luyàn*.)
Another prescription:
Tie a rope tightly around the limb approximately one cun above the wound to prevent the spread of venom. Then, have someone suck the bitten area with their mouth to extract the poison, spitting it out repeatedly until the venom is exhausted, at which point the pain ceases. The area sucked by the mouth may swell slightly but without severe suffering. (Identical to *Beiji*.)
It is further stated that "various snakes" do not refer to the three types mentioned earlier. This category includes Red-banded snakes (Chi Lian), Yellow-jawed snakes, and six or seven other types whose names are unknown. Black snakes found in water are called Gongli. A type found in mountains resembles them. None of these are known to bite humans. There is a Hook Snake (Goushe) with a tail like a hook, capable of hanging upside down to drag humans and beasts into the water to eat them. In the south, there is another snake; if a person is bitten by it, they do not die immediately but will be pursued by the snake for life, seeking its original owner. Even amidst hundreds of people, the snake will come directly for them; only by fleeing more than one hundred li can one escape.
There is also a Boat Snake (Chuanshe), measuring seven or eight chi in length, resembling a boat. Its venom is fatal upon biting. However, scraping wood from a boat, boiling it, and soaking the wound leads to recovery. Generally, large snakes are considered divine/spiritual snakes and should not be killed wantonly. Snakes with a white mark on their forehead resembling the character "Wang" (King) possess spiritual qualities. Those with horn-like structures are believed to be transforming into dragons. Bites from Green snakes cause immediate death. Bites from Vipers (Fu) result in death within one day. The venom of Hu snakes is more urgent/severe than that of other snakes. If not treated early, it often leads to the amputation of limbs due to tissue necrosis. Medicinal treatment cannot rely on a single method; the condition must be carefully assessed. (All from Volume 8.)
